Each root supports the whole growth. To quote from Ale.xander Pope: ' Tis education forms the common mind: Just as the twig is bent the trees inclined. Cultivation of the mind combined with stimu- lating physical activities and enthusiastic or- ganizations are shaping wholesome, capable, and dependable youth. CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ACTIVITIES SPORTS CLASSES ADMINISTRATION FACULTY ADVERTISEMENTS 1 11 23 35 53 61 We, as members of the 1969 Darlington Senior class, gratefully dedicate our CHIEF to Mr. Galen Smith. In his three years of teaching here, he helped immensely in raising the spirit of our school through the sports teams and thus was a factor in making DHS grow greater. To Mr. Smith we extend our most humble thanks. SCHOOL LIFE School life is what ' s happening at Darlington High School. Each event is a proof of the reason why DHS is truly growing greater, for greatness is shown by spirit, and this year we believe our progress clearly visible. VARIETY SHOW For the second year, the high school chorus presented a vari- ety show as a money-making project to help pay for their various projects during the year. On November 1, 1968, they entertained the com- munity with the products of Hi Neighbor . Three acts-- military, hillbilly, and minstre l were followed by a final pa- triotic scene, all of which were very successful. PARIS BY NIGHT On Saturday, May 11, 196S, the Junior class presented their prom for the Seniors- -PARIS BY NIGHT. Roses, soft lights, sidewalk cafes, and the Eifel Tower were just high points of the sights and romantic atmosphere of the night. The meal- -from the baked ham prepared by the Juniors ' mothers to the after dinner cham- pagne and pretzels- -were served by Freshmen dressed as French waiters and waitresses. The evenings program began with the tradi- tional welcome, response, prophecy, and Seniors wills, followed by the crowning of the King and Queen. Senior candidates and their Junior escorts were: Mike Mutterspaugh, Nancy Weltnerj Ted Alexander, Jeanne Quigg; Kent Butler, Sue Gick; Mary Cohee, Chuck Anderson; Beverly Wilson, Fred Warren; and Diane Branstetter, Don Threlkeld. Diana and Ted were crowned by Mary Jo Cox and Steve Weliever and led the dancing provided by the Westwinds. HOMECOMING 1969 This year the Student Council sponsored another great Homecoming on January 25 at the Coal Creek Central game. The events of the evening included introduction of varsity players and their parents; introduction of past lettermen and cheerleaders; and presentation of the queen candidates and crowning of the queen, Deborah Wilson. The candidates and their escorts were: Senior Deborah Wilson, Gerry Clouser; Junior Barb Vermillion, Bill Hampton; Sophomore Vicki Spears, Steve Apple; Freshman Gail Hampton, Charlie Warren. Deborah was crowned by Mary Cohee, escorted by Kent Butler. Flower and crown bearers were Greta and Greg Binford; and the Masterof Ceremonies for the occasion was Paul Runnels.
