The classes, organizations, clubs, and teanis--all have their own spirits that make them unique. From these various groups the school attains what is known as school spirit. With it the school is not just a building with people, but a close-knit group of students and teachers seeking knowledge through co-operation. Look around and you will see that our school has school spirit. The enthusiasm of the classes, athletic teams, musical groups, and various other organizations fills the entire school. Indeed spirits are everywhere. TABLE OF CONTENTS School Life Activities Organizations Sports Faculty and Administration Seniors Classes Advertisements Spirited Seniors -w Travel Everywhere Spirited Gratitude MR. EUGENE GOSSMAN As members of the Darlington senior class, we respectfully dedicate the 1968 CHIEF to Mr. Eugene Gossman. In his four years of teaching, he has won the respect of everyone through his understanding both in the classroom and out. His encouraging words of guidance will long be a part of our lives. To Mr. Gossman we owe our deepest gratitude. Miss Montgomery County of 1968 Last summer Beverly Wilson was chosen Miss Montgomery County 4-H Queen on the basis of personality, poise, 4-H and community activities, and bathing suit competition. She then went to Indianapolis where she ably represented our county in competition for Miss Indiana State 4-H Queen. Miss Junior Miss Linda Kirk also represented our school well--in her case, as the winner of the county Junior Miss Pageant. She was chosen on the basis of beauty, talent poise, and scholarship, over a number of other girls. Linda ' s next goal was the State Pageant held at Frankfort. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to both of these girls who have brought honor and recognition to our school. SCHOOL LIFE QUEEN: Mary Jo Cox KING: Bruce Runnels Spring Enchantment May 6, 1967, was the big night. After several months of preparation, the Class of ' 68 was ready to present its Prom --SPRING ENCHANTMENT. As guests entered through a trellised walk, they saw a large green and yellow canopy with a lovely white iron seat under it. Those attending were escorted to their seats arranged in a floor plan resembling a giant daisy. Chandeliers hung in each of the scal- loped petals, and several topiary trees adorned the floor. The meal was served by the Freshmen, who were dressed in green and yellow to match the colors of the Prom. The customary welcome and response were followed by the will, history, and prophecy. Mary Jo Cox was crowned queen, and Bruce Runnels was chosen king. Following the coronation was the dance with music played by Kenny and the Counts. Homecoming of 1968 This year the Homecoming, which was planned by the Stud ent Council brought with it a flurry of activities. Finally at the East Tipp ballgame on January 27, came the results of this work. First, past letter- men and cheerleaders were recognized. Later- -at halftime--Mary Cohee, a senior, was crowned queen. To round out the eve- ning, a dance was held with music by the Crawfordsville Dance Band. In all, it seems the 1968 Homecoming was a great success. Spirited Songsters r fJ C? ' PI nf ' P. |r j r ?? ■ ' ' 1 ' ' ' ' ' The high school choir has been extremely busy with activities this year. Under Mrs. Smith ' s direction, these spirited songsters presented a variety show last fall, featur- ing several different styles of music and songs. Later on during the year they sang at school convocations and at the New Market Music Festival in March. The tal- ent put forth by the choir has certainly been a much-enjoyed asset in our school. Science Club Excited by the many ever-changing aspects of science, these students have participated in a number of activities to give themselves a better understanding in all branches of science. Perhaps their scientific endeavors today will lead to a career in science. With Mrs. Leeds as their sponsor, these students have participated in many speech activi- ties. Included were a number of speech contests held all over Indiana, from which several awards were brought back to Darlington. Their many activities have been beneficial to both themselves and the farming community. As a money-making project, the FFA has sold slow-moving -vehicle signs, which by law most farm equipment must have. One project that these boys undertake each year is the farming of an experi- mental plot. All of their hard work has had its reward, as the FFA has won several awards in judging contests. Two boys, Abe Hodgen and Larry Personett, had the privilege of attending the national convention of the Future Farmers of America, which was held in Kansas City. Members of the Stu- dent Coimcil were busy this year, plan- ning Homecoming, teacher introductions, and various other projects. Many of the Council ' s ideas came from the summer workshop, attended by Mike and Paul, and the state conven- tion last fall , to which most of the members went. Pres.--Mike Mutterspaugh V-Pres.--Paul Runnels Seer. --Nancy Weltner. Throughout the years, 4-H has been an organization whose members have had a chance to discover more about the world they live in through various projects. We have been fortunate to have several outstanding members recently. Last fall Rob Shelton traveled to Chicago with other Montgomery County 4-Her ' s as did Beverly Wilson, who was chosen Miss Montgomery County. Many other members have won awards and honors on the county and state level for their projects. ROW 1: J. Quigg, R. Shelton, R. Boo- her, N. Wilcox. ROW 2: J. Boots, P. Branstetter, B. Smith, R. Starting with ads, orders, and then the most important work of all--the actual layout--the entire staff has successfully met its deadlines and coped with all the questions and confusion that go along with the planning. Climaxing all this work was the arrival of the annuals, which we think are the best ever assembled. Their assistance is appreciated by both the students and Mrs. Ainsworth. o F F I H E C L P E R S We ' ve Got Spirit . . . in Our Sports. Early this season it was apparent that this would be one of our school ' s best years for basketball. A new school record was set by scoring 109 points in one game, and the century mark was reached several other times in the season. Our first trophy was for winning the 4-way toumey at Waynetown, but the greatest triumph of the season was winning the county toumey. By defeating Coal Creek 100 to 78, our Indiana not only kept the keg but also gained a beautiful trophy and much fame and glory.
