Class Prophecg DarlIngton had really changed SINCE the last tnme l had been here Now It was the largest Inland cIty In the world due to the dIscovery of quartered atoms on the banks of Honey Creek It was quIte a con trast to the peaceful town I had known durIng my HIgh School days The traffIc was almost as bad as New York durtng the early l95Os I wouldnt try to drnve any place In It myself so I felt the best thIng to do was haII a cab and let someone else worry about the traffIc I mIssed the fIrst two cabs but fInally was able to stop one QUITE to my surprIse l recognIzed the dr'Iver as Ed VanGIlder Ed Informed me that he wasnt really a cabbIe but was ID the stock car racIng fIeld and was already In second place thls season Marshall Teague the grand old man of racIng was hold Ing fIrst place The cab was only one of many owned by hIs old frrend BIII WIngate who had started out as a mechanIc and had gone to the top The reason Ed was drIvIng was because the regular drIver MIke Gray was at the NatIonaI Cab DFIVCTS AssocIatIon meetIng to TCCBIVB hIs award as the Most Loqua crous Cabbre In the 48 States Yes as a cabbIe MIke always had someone Wlfh whom to talk At my destInatIon The lndIan Hotel I got out pald Ed and started to go InsIde but a neon sIgn readIng Try Harshbargers Hamburgers attracted my attentIon I knew It could be none other than Don s restaurant so I headed there before regIsterIng at the hotel lnslde a delIghtful smIle greeted me Yes It was Don HIs great whnte hat flopped from sIde to Slde as he came to greet me and I could see that he was as frrendly as ever As we ate at a back table and dIscussed our old school days the mnlk man came wIth hIs delIvery of mrlk Then I notrced It was not a man but a woman wIth a stunnIng dark complex ION and raven black harr whIch was QUITE a contrast to the pure whIte unIform Don n0TICed my bewIlder ment and explaIned that It was my old frIend MarIIee She had fInIshed musIc school trIed the opera but dIdnt lIke It so had become AmerIcas fIrst sIngIng mIlk woman After eatIng I headed towards my orIgInal destInatIon The lndIan Hotel There I dtscovered DorIs Rogers was the manager She fIxed me up wIth the best room In the hotel and then InvIted me to dIne Wlfh her that evenIng In the hotels famous Blue Room Here she Informed me l would meet some old frrends because the entertaInment was by Darlene Cox who had a very Interestlng song and dance rou tIne and by Carole Ingram who had Iust returned from HGWBII wIth a troupe of hula hula gIrls Carole had learned the dance so qulckly that she was the featured skzrt swIsher GracIousIy I accepted the InvI tatIon and looked forward to a delIghtful evenIng LeavIng the hotel to see some of the town before evenIng I ran Into JIm Remley propped agaInst the corner of FrIends Drug Store the second largest ID the state He straIghtened up lust long enough to shake hands and then fell back Into hIs old posItIon HIS clothes appeared to be the most expensnve krnd for oIl had been dIscovered under the furnIture store Later as I walked through the park I met Gene Leath Gene was the play ground drrector All the lIttle chIldren were fascInated by hIm and worshIpped the ground on whIch he walked Farther on In the park l bought a paper and sat down to rest In The DarlIngton Evemng Harold edIt ed by Max Lough I read about many of my old frIends DIck TImmOnS was the hero of the DarlIngton PolIce force He had captured three burglars sxngle handed as they trIed to break Into the Super Suds Soap Factory whIch was owned by none other than Bob Stewart In a Lucky Strxke advertIsement there was a pIcture of the TV star Jean Leach who was sayIng SINCE Ive swrtched to Luckles Ive stopped havIng nIght mares I turned to the socIety page and there saw a pIcture of Kxtty WhIte and her three charmmg daughters KItty was presIdent of the Uper 400 and her three daughters were presIdent VICE presIdent and secretary of the LIttle 400 for the younger SOCIBIITCS On the sports page was an artlcle TBBTUTIHQ Irma Dee Parker and It certamly looked IIke she was on her way to the OlympIcs and the tennIs champ IonshIp of the world Suddenly I realrzed that the sun was goIng down and the evenIng shadows were lengthennng As I hurrIed back to the hotel and my drnner date I realIzed that all of the SenIors of 53 seemed to be doIng very well for themselves 1 - ' . , , , . . . , l . - . . , . . . . , ' ' - 1 1 ' - 1 1 f 1 . .
