-1987 Redbirds Execute Excellena Dave Hirsbrunner completed his four year track career by becoming the first D.H.S. athlete to become an individual State Champion. Victories in the 3200M run and the 1600M run at the State Meet made Dave a double winner. His twenty points were added to ten earned by Dean Wagner's discus (2nd place) and shot put (4th place) results to give the Redbirds the Class C runner-up trophy. Other State qualifiers were Sean Stevenson in the pole vault and Pat McGettigan in the high jump.

With no Senior members on the squad, the Varsi- ty team achieved a 9-2 overall record and 6-1 in the conference. The team was lead by Junior Captain and MVP, Matt Loken. The highlight of the season was defeating Lancaster in a one- hole playoff at the Darlington Country Club. The Redbirds did not do as well as expected at the Conference Meet at Cuba City. The golfers placed third overall on a chilly day in Cuba City. The weather did not seem to affect Matt Loken. Loken captured the Southern Eight Conference Champion Gold Medal by firing a 76 on the par 72 course. Freshman David Gould was the only Redbird to advance from the Regional Meet at the Dodgeville Country Club. The young Darling- ton team did not perform well, but David Gould shot an impressive 77 on the par 70 course, therefore sending him to the Sectional Meet at the Odana Country Club in Madison. The young golfer shot an 87. which did not qualify him for the State Meet. The 1988 golf season should be a promising one. The Redbirds will have more ex- perience and will be contenders for the Con- ference Championship.
