Victories in the 3200M run and the 1600M run at the State Meet made Dave a double winner. His twenty points were added to ten earned by Dean Wagner's discus (2nd place) and shot put (4th place) results to give the Redbirds the Class C runner-up trophy. Ron Lee Golfers Drive For Victory The D.H.S. golfers had a very positive 1987 year. With no Senior members on the squad, the Varsi- ty team achieved a 9-2 overall record and 6-1 in the conference. The team was lead by Junior Captain and MVP, Matt Loken. The highlight of the season was defeating Lancaster in a one- hole playoff at the Darlington Country Club. The Redbirds did not do as well as expected at the Conference Meet at Cuba City. The golfers placed third overall on a chilly day in Cuba City. The weather did not seem to affect Matt Loken. Loken captured the Southern Eight Conference Champion Gold Medal by firing a 76 on the par 72 course. Freshman David Gould was the only Redbird to advance from the Regional Meet at the Dodgeville Country Club. The young Darling- ton team did not perform well, but David Gould shot an impressive 77 on the par 70 course, therefore sending him to the Sectional Meet at the Odana Country Club in Madison. The young golfer shot an 87. which did not qualify him for the State Meet. The 1988 golf season should be a promising one. The Redbirds will have more ex- perience and will be contenders for the Con- ference Championship. Success At Its Best The 1987 football team pulled off a very successful season of 12-1. With the attitude, effort, and dedication the Birds put forth, the team pulled off a conference championship, the first in fourteen years, not to mention a State title. Coach McArthur's team was full of talent this year. Each mem- ber carried a very important role on the team which made this team num- ber one. Dean Wagner pulled through the season as leading rusher followed close behind by brother Tony. Matt Lo- ken, guarded by a great offensive line of Seniors; Lance Lansing, Mike Harper, Pat McGettigan, Keith Rielly, and Cliff Burgess along wifh Junior Nick Roelli, put many points on the scoreboard. This year's All Conference teams were dominated by Redbird team mem- bers. The team had a total of fourteen positions along with Special Mention which went to newcomer Mike Harper. Leading the list was Dean Wagner who earned MVP along with 1st team full- back and defensive tackle. Pat McGettigan also captured two 1st team positions with guard and line- backer. 1st team linebacker and 2nd team guard was awarded to Keith Our success is equal to the success of our off season work. -Coach McArthur Rielly. Cliff Burgess snagged fhe center position on the 1st team. Other 1st team members were Lance Lansing at tackle, and Aaron Lancaster at defen- sive back. Those players receiving 2nd feam honors on the SWAL team were Matt Loken, linebacker; Dale Ray, tackle and defensive end; Craig Kom- prood, mid-guard; and Tony Wagner, halfback. Senior Co-Captains Tra- cy Johnson and Amy Leahy lead the squad of eight being the only returning lettermen. The team played in ten triangular or qua- drangular meets competing against Lan- caster, Cuba City, and several Madison schools. In the team's intrasquad meet, the red squad, consisting of Captain Tracy, Sara, Shelia, and Angie edged out the black squad, led by Amy, April, Trisha, and Melissa. Handicap went to Shelia Ohnstad. The team traveled to Madison Odana for the Sectional meet in which they placed ninth in a field of fifteen class A and B schools. Tracy Johnson lead the squad with a 103 placing tenth. Amy and April both shot in the top two-thirds in the field of sev- enty-five golfers. The team finished the sea- son with an 11-11 record. Girls Goi — ■i—— — M '■A Front Row (L to R): Carmen Steiner. The boys varsity was ranked number 1 in the state in class C throughout the year, won two invitationals. was undefeated in dual, meets, and missed a berth in the state meet by one place at sectionals. They also ran the third fastest total team time ever. Steve Kautz, the only senior on the team, qualified for the state meet, and placed sixth in the meet held in Madison. The boys Junior Varsity team had a successful 17-1 season winning two invitation- als. The girls team, which was made up on one senior and six first year runners by the end of the year, was rated in the top ten all season. They had many close races throughout the season and battled veteran teams at all of the invitation- als. They placed third at the conference meet, second at regionals. and sixth at sectionals. Senior Anita Meylor missed a berth in the state meet by one place. 16 Boys Buckets A Lot Of Holes To Fill The 1987-1988 Varsity Boys Basketball team is a very young team. We started the season with just three players with any type of Varsity experience. Through hard work and playing together as a team, we will show steady improvement in the last two months of the season. -Coach Hopkins This year's team has been playing up to expectations, but needs to keep improv- ing in the next two years to become title contenders. -Coach Edwards Front Row (L to R): Jeff Somerville. Their leadership showed through as the Redbirds placed high at every invitational. They opposed tough competi- tion to win first place in the LaCrosse Bi-State Invi- tational. The new S.W.A.L. conference pre- sented a lot of tough competition for the Red- birds and also a lot of nail- biting matches. They placed a close second to Dodgevilie In the Bosco- bel Invitational. Our wres- tlers were also rated third in the state WIAA coaches poll. The Junior Varsity team, though small, also faired well this season. The wres- tlers concentrated mainly on personal goals, which proved effective at both dual meets and invita- tionals. Good Job Wres- tlers! In the first round, the Redbirds were defeated only by Iowa Grant and Riverdale. In the second round of play, we defeated Southwestern and Boscobel. The highlight of the season was beating Iowa Grant (rated sixth in the state) one out of three games. We also played tough at the Barneveld tournament, placing second. Senior Penny McKernan served as captain and Senior Shelly Gould was chosen Most Valuable Player. The JV squad also had a good season. Iowa Grant and Boscobel were the only teams to beat the Redbirds in first round play. In second round action. Darlington was defeated only by Iowa Grant and Southwestern. Our record this year was 8-4 The highlight of the JV season was the second round game against Mineral Point The Redbirds pulled up from 8-13 to beat the Pointers 16-14. This year's team, the third in D.H.S. history, was comprised of nine seniors. The team consisted of students from three different levels determined by grade point aver- ages. The first round of competition for the team took place in Fennimore in November. The top two scores in each division were used in the final team score. The team, under the direction of Mr. Osterday, began gathering materials in the summer, and they met mornings before school and on Sunday evenings to ex- change materials and review. They had a more than respectable showing this year cap- turing the third place trophy. Keep up the good work! Badger State Representatives The week spent at Badger State is a learning experience in politics and citizen- ship. The citizens of Badger State learned about local, county, and state government through a series of campaigns, elections, caucuses, and political party meetings. The representatives also met other people from all across the state and learned about secondary education and career choices. Badger Girls' representatives, Jody Chellevold and Sara Burt, stayed on the UW-Madison campus for their week. Ripon College was the location of Badger Boys' State. This year's yearbook staff, advised by Ms. Wagner, has gone through a lot of copy sheets and white out to make the 1988 edition a special one. Many hours have been put into this yearbook, in hopes of capturing all the memories of this past year. The staff has been busy designing layouts, taking photos, typing and finalizing each page before every deadline. The candy sellers are also a big part of the yearbook. Everyday after school, during volleyball and basketball games, and wrestling meets, they are there to take your order. Because of the candy sales, the cost of your book is reduced. The Marching Redbird Band had a very successful fall when they won first place in the Warren Pumpkin Fest Parade. Other highlights included U.W. Band Days at Camp Randall Stadium where they joined numerous other bands to play three pre- selected songs. Their biggest moment this year was when they marched on Comp Randall's turf to entertain nearly the whole town of Darlington, as the Redbird football team became state champs. Juniors President-Angie Ray Secretary-Debbie Gordie Vice-President-Steve Winslow Treasurer-Angie Loken Throughout the years the junior class has seen the school years go by fast. With all the memories that we share, being good friends, we've learned to care. As juniors we were faced with homecoming tention, to defend our ti- tle as honorable mention. We are starting to prepare for our junior prom night, we hope all our plans will turn out all right. Being juniors we have moved to the varsity team. We are working very hard to fulfill all our dreams. Some of us are atheletically or musically in- clined, while others are out to have a good time. Overall, the junior class of 1989 , has the potential of being fine. We will never forget our years here at D.H.S., knowing that we accomplished our very best. Our junior year will be the greatest one yet, making the memories we will never forget. Our sophomore year has been filled with many exciting experiences. At the begin- ning of the year we ordered our class rings. Soon after that we received our permits and licenses. The highlight of the year though, has been listen- ing to all of Mr. Schrear's ani- mal stories!!! We made many memories this year, and are looking even more forward to next year. Football, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading all began before school even started. And then came homecoming and our first high school dance. We were looking very forward to it during float building as that would have meant that we survived the upperclassmen's leg- endary initiation antics. We breathed a sigh of relief when, after a few weeks of school, we could all put our maps away; only to replace them with magazine order forms. We did a terrific job though, raising more that $4,900. We’re proud to be the new mem- bers of the winning Redbird team and we'll strive to continue that tradition in the years to come. WHAT GIVES OUR fRESHMEN THE BIGGEST PROBLEM? The hours spent on the making of this year's book have been more than worthwhile. Seeing the smiling faces of students as they turn the pages, is more than thanks enough. This year's staff has outdone themselves, and I am proud to say that this edition is the finest D.H.S. has ever seen. Being able to capture all the memories that we have made here together, is what our goal was from day one. After each deadline a sigh of relief swept over the staff, knowing that we had accomplished that goal. Those helping with that goal include: Photoland III. Re- publican Journal, Ben Franklin, and Mr. Fiene, our apprecia- tion to all of you for your time spent with us. We hope you enjoy this fine edition of the Pe- katonika, and the memories that are included in it. JKaUjj J lusoi. j 115 1988: The Year And Faces We Will Never Forget CAR RADIO STATION VIDEO T.V.
