What a year for the Girls Golf Team. They started out the year with a new course record of 193 at Cole Acres. As the season pro- gressed the squad had high hopes of reaching other goals. The team was almost unbeatable except for those matches with Madi- son Memorial and Madison Edgewood, two of the finest teams in the state. The Golfers closed out the season with a 14 - 5 record and set a new tournament record of 406 at the Madison Invita- tional. At Regionals, the girls played through rain and cold to move on to the Sectional meet. In La Crosse, the squad knew they were the underdogs, but their determination and pride as a team pulled them together to advance to the State meet, the first Darlington girls team to qualify for this. Playing against all class “A schools was an unforgettable experience for the girls. Even though they placed 8th at State, Coach McKichan, as well as the girls, were proud of their performance. 28

The girls team, which was rated in the top 10 in the state in class c for the entire season, battled a rash of injuries to compile a 26 and 15 record. They finished 2nd at the Darlington and Platteville Invitationals and beat Platte- ville for the first time. The junior varsity boys ran impressively again finishing the season at 24 and 4 with two of those 4 losses at the hands of class A schools. The varsity boys team, ranked 1 all sea- son long, won 5 invitationals and all 3 dual meets on their way to a 54-1 season re- cord, not to mention their second straight STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. They scored 53 points at the state meet, winning the title by 19 points. Walking across the stage at the state meet awards ceremony with Redbird fans cheering loudly was a fitting way to end a memorable season. Several good runners will graduate this year, but there are many talented underclassmen ready to put in the miles and do the work necessary to carry on our winning tradi- tion. JO
