They received first place at two major invitationals. with a second place at the Conference Meet. The team ended with a first place Regional title and a ninth place Sectional finish, sending Todd Johnson to the State Meet. The 1986 Girls Track Team also led an exciting season with a 3-3 dual meet record. Placing second and third at two major invita- tionals. they received a fourth place finish at the Conference Meet. The girls ended up with a third at Regionals and a ninth place Sectional finish, sending Kris Osterday to the State Meet. Last year’s baseball team came under new coaching staff as Mr. Mike Hopkins took over the reins from former Coach Tom Os- terday. In his first year as a coach, Mr. Hop- kins had three major goals: to play good ball, to play as a team, and to have fun. Philosophically, Coach Hopkins feels the last point is very important since “ ... inside every baseball player, young or old, there is a little kid. Though the season doesn’t look so good statistically, Coach Hopkins feels the team was ”... entertaining in every game- they played ball as a team and they played well. We wish this year’s team good luck. Back Row (L to R): Dave Hirsbrunner, Mark Whalen, Tim Lancaster, Shawn Hauser, Mike Fenner, Kevin Schwartz. Darlington placed third in the Regional tournament with a score of 349. Tim Curry was able to compete in the Sec- tional tournament as an individual qualifier. Top point getters for the season were Matt Loken, 18: Tim Curry, 17; and Tom Curry, 14. They started out the year with a new course record of 193 at Cole Acres. As the season pro- gressed the squad had high hopes of reaching other goals. The team was almost unbeatable except for those matches with Madi- son Memorial and Madison Edgewood, two of the finest teams in the state. The Golfers closed out the season with a 14 - 5 record and set a new tournament record of 406 at the Madison Invita- tional. At Regionals, the girls played through rain and cold to move on to the Sectional meet. In La Crosse, the squad knew they were the underdogs, but their determination and pride as a team pulled them together to advance to the State meet, the first Darlington girls team to qualify for this. Playing against all class “A schools was an unforgettable experience for the girls. Even though they placed 8th at State, Coach McKichan, as well as the girls, were proud of their performance. 28 STATE Co-Caotains Lisa McCoy and Molly Mosley Most Valuable Lisa McCoy Most Improved Amy Leahy Intrasauad Meet Medalist Lisa McCoy Handicap Sue DeSonia BOUND Front Row: (L to R): Anita Meylor. The girls team, which was rated in the top 10 in the state in class c for the entire season, battled a rash of injuries to compile a 26 and 15 record. They finished 2nd at the Darlington and Platteville Invitationals and beat Platte- ville for the first time. The junior varsity boys ran impressively again finishing the season at 24 and 4 with two of those 4 losses at the hands of class A schools. The varsity boys team, ranked 1 all sea- son long, won 5 invitationals and all 3 dual meets on their way to a 54-1 season re- cord, not to mention their second straight STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. They scored 53 points at the state meet, winning the title by 19 points. Walking across the stage at the state meet awards ceremony with Redbird fans cheering loudly was a fitting way to end a memorable season. Several good runners will graduate this year, but there are many talented underclassmen ready to put in the miles and do the work necessary to carry on our winning tradi- tion. This year's Varsity Squad consisted of twelve members, seven of whom were returning lettermen. The girls went through the season playing with good intensity and determina- tion. Despite the losses, the girls fin- ished the season with a few close games under their belt. The team was coached by Mr. Huston, with assistance from Mr. Fiene. The Varsity girls gymnastics team began the season with a number of new faces expected to fill the void left by last year’s graduating class. Relying heavily on inexperienced varsity gymnasts, the team struggled to be consistent early in the season. Team and individual improvement character- ized the latter half of the season. The outlook is bright for the 1987-88 season which will bring back an experienced group of gymnasts and an outstanding group of returning JV performers. This young and talented squad has the skills and determination necessary to become quality varsity gymnasts. 38 39 Front Row (L to R): Jim Halvorson, Jeff Paulson, Steve Kautz, Pat Boyle. A second place finish at the Boscobel Tournament was one of the team highlights. Tournament championships for Kurt Malott and Wayne Thompson along with Pat McGettigan’s third place finish at Bi-State were individual highlights. Jeff Paulson and Pat McGettigan both qualified for sectionals. The J.V. Team had a successful year finish- ing in the top three at all their tournaments, even though they had to forfeit several weight classes. The 1986-87 school year was a “banner” year for the DHS Pep Club. Led by the four senior officers, this year’s members have done their part to pep up Redbird High. The year began with the football season, and of course, selling candy at the concession stand for all home football games. For Homecoming, the Pep Club joined together with RAC to hold the first Tailgate Party, on Friday before the game. A good time was had by all, and everyone hopes this can become a Homecoming tradition. Whether it be pitching in to help on Pep Rallies, or making locker posters and hall signs, the Pep Club showed their spirit in the 86-87 school year. 49 Co«m£ Front Row (L to R): Tina Weinbrenner.Deanna Lindell, Erin Gallagher. The FHA has been keeping busy with many activities this year. We started out by making decorations for the manor, at Christmas time we went caroling with the FFA, and made ornaments for the Darlington Christmas House. To raise money, the FHA has been selling don- uts on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the cafeteria. February 8-14 was National FHA Week and the Darling- ton Chapter celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. Kent Ruppert and Debbie Schilling were crowned King and Queen at the 14th annual Tweetheart Dance that the FHA and FFA sponsored. In March, we have our guest night banquet and our final project for the year is our spring fashion show, where we model garments we have made during the year. Jody Douglas and Sarah Ruf competed at the district Make It Yourself With Wool contest on November 2. Both girls advanced to State, Jody with her teal dress made for formal occasions, and Sarah with her heather wine made for casual events. They had a lot of fun making and modeling their dresses. The girls did very well on November 21 in Wausau at the State level, and are looking forward to competing again. 54 State “Make It With Wool” Contest Representatives Sarah Ruf and Jody Douglas Front Row (L to R): Jill Stauffacher, Cara Norland, Lisa Steger, Kent Ruppert, Jennifer Reichling. Supplying the scoop, meeting the deadline, snapping the photos, and rolling the presses, the Redbird tradi- tion advances into 1987. “Always there when it is there — unyielding and informed, the editors and the staff pro- vide insight into life at DHS.” 62 PeJcatbttilccb The PEKATONIKA Staff is responsible for constructing and financing the 1987 yearbook. Many hours have been spent making this yearbook the best it can be, and we truly hope that it will help recap all those wonderful and memorable events of the past year. A look back reveals ... a 2nd State Cross Country Ti- tle earned by our harriers, a first-ever State berth for the Girls Golf Team, along with Jody and Sarah’s participa- tion in the State “Make it with Wool” Contest; several new teachers, as well as student teachers, joined our excellent teaching staff while two of our teachers received recognition of their extraordinary talents; RAC brought us enthralling pre- sentations by Jean Sable and Paradise, and elected 2 outstanding teachers (Mr. Bykowski and Mrs. Hauser) and a priceless citizen of our community (Mr. Diego Camacho) to their 1 Club; and the list goes on ... May the memories always live on with the help of this book. Front Row (L to R): Co-Editors: Melanie Schwartz. Nichole Link. Second Row: Jennifer Ray. Michelle Hagen. Angie Steiner. Kim White. These two spent a week on the UW Madison Campus with oth- er selected students from throughout Wisconsin. Kent Ruppert and Tom Hen- drickson were selected as the Badger Boys State Re- presentatives. This confer- ence was held on the Ripon College Campus. Badger Boys and Girls State are opportunities to get a close-up look at the govern- ment and how it works. The selected students from around the state are cho- sen to work together at dif- ferent governmental levels- city, township and state. Molly and Deanna both held positions on the town- ship level and were spon- sored by Bates-O’Brian- Howe VFW Post 214 and the Legion Auxiliary. w Redbod Adt ti q Coumdtee Front Row (L toR): Jeremy Mosley, Ted Nyffenegger. They organized the 1st Annual Home- coming “tailgating” party, and planned this year's Christmas pro- gram. RAC considered both of these events to be a big success. Assemblies and Conferences are an area in which our committee is always very active. Working along with the We Care Com- mittee, RAC brought you “Paradise” as a school assembly. We also worked with them to bring you Jean Sable, a recovered alcoholic, and five men from the Oakhill Correctional Institute. We attended one conference this year held at Richland Center, hopefully we will be able to send some of next year’s offi- cers to the state convention. RAC would like to thank all the students for being so cooperative and receptive during these events, and for choosing us to represent you. 65 Deanna -n- Bnad hlotujb Couwig 66 Senior Float: First Place Sophomore Float: Flonorable Mention Junior Float: Honorable Mention Freshmen Float: Second Place 67 ft ft ai A Balk . . . We have spent many long, hard hours trying to make the 1987 Pekatonika our best annual ever. All of the time spent was worthwhile, when we realize that this year's yearbook holds some of our fondest memories here at DHS. We would like to thank The Republican Journal. Photo Land, and Ben Franklin for all of their help in making this book possible. We hope that you enjoy this year’s yearbook, as much as we enjoyed making it our best ever at DHS. 119 120
