Treas: Deanna Lindell Kristin Osterday, Lunn Rowe The Redbird Advisory Committee (RAC) had an opportunity to attend a number of conferences and workshops. Many of these include topics related to high school students, such as peer pressure, chemical use and abuse, and teen-age suicide. Members also assist throughout the year with assemblies and special programs, like Veteran’s Day and Senior Awards Day. One special project this year was the start of the Redbird Number One Club which recognizes students, faculty, staff and boosters who meet an established criteria. In general, the faculty advisors, Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Osterday, along with the students on RAC try to make DHS the best school possible. 14 Row 1 (L to R) - Tammy Wiegel, Michelle Reisen, Renee Reichling, Kristin Osterday, Penny Sauer, Melanie Schwartz, Wendy Weinbrenner, Julie Flanagan, Penny McKernan, Becky Gordee, Cara Norland, Bob Cullen, Tom Johnson. The 1985-86 Redbird staff is headed by advisor Jerry Rassman and co-editors Bob Cullen and Tom Johnson, and ably backed by assistant editors, Christine Linden, Penny Sauer, Tammy Gratz and Amy Pratt. These people, in conjunction with a large group of staff members who write the interesting articles, are the ones who offer the varied insights into life at D.H.S. One of the strengths of the Redbird is the fact that we do have an excellent crew, and that these many individuals are willing to put in the time and effort, despite the low pay, to make the paper the interesting literary vehicle that it is. 15 V PEKATONIKA STAFF The days we spend at DHS are filled with many moments that will long be remembered. This book is to be a REFLECTION of the memories we have shared. This year been an exciting and eventful one for the Redbirds. Not only did we break our losing streak in football, we ran away with the state cross country title as well. The PEKATONIKA staff has put in many hours to make this the best yearbook possible. We hope you enjoy it now and in the years to come. Throughout history, each time Halley's comet has passed by our planet, great events have occurred in the lives of men. The 1986 PEKATONIKA holds this tradition to be true. ROW 1: Jenny Berget, Melanie Schwartz. HIGHLIGHTS Captain: Todd Nethery MVP: Curt Rood Leading Hitter: Curt Rood Best ERA: Troy Cullen Coach Tom Osterday completed his 11th and final season as the Redbird baseball coach. During that time, his teams produced 113 wins. The 1985 team compiled an 8 and 13 record, with five losses by only one run. The season highlight came when the squad traveled to the Milwaukee area and defeated Campbellsport 5-4 behind the pitching of sophomore Dave Hirsbrunner. Mark Whalen and Curt Rood produced new team records as Whalen recorded the most runs (26) and best on base average (.642) of any Redbird. Rood put his name in the record books with most hits (30) and highest batting average (.435). Whalen was a unanimous All Conference outfielder and Rood was 1st team shortstop for both the Southern Eight and All District teams. This year's team did very well and next year's will hopefully add to these great many accomplishments. J V Row 1 (L to R) Tom Runkle, Robyn Willborn, Kent Ruppert. The Varsity team compiled an 8 and 4 seasonal record and a 5 and 2 confer- ence record while the J.V. team turned in a 3 and 4 confer- ence record and a 7 and 5 seasonal record. Placing second in the Regional Tournament with a score of 332 and two indi- vidual qualifiers (Jay Homb and Tom Curry) enabled them to compete in the Sectional Tournament. There they com- peted among some of the finest golf teams in the state. In the Conference Tournament they placed third with a score of 352. Throughout the whole year the team members spent long hard and dedicated hours practicing to achieve what they did. This year's team will hopefully continue the excel- lent job. 46 DATE OPPONENTS SCORE 4-15 Dodgeville (NC) 175-185 4-16 Monroe (NC) 172-179 4-19 Mineral Point 175-217 4-22 Platteville 181-164 4-23 Fennimore (NC) 176-169 4-23 Prairie du Chien (NC) 176-172 4-26 Cuba City 165-181 4-30 Dodgeville 170-186- 5-06 Lancaster 168-170 5-10 Iowa Grant 161-187 5-13 Mineral Point (NC) 157-203 5-15 Southwestern 192-170 GIRLS TRACK The girls track team had a very good 1985 season which resulted in a third place conference meet finish and championship at the Cassville Invitational and the Regional meet. CROSS COUNTRY 1985 STATE CHAMPIONS The 1985 season was the most successful ever for the cross country teams. The No. 1 ranked varsity boys team finished the season with an undefeated 49-0 record, running away with five invitational titles. They also finished first at the Regional and Sectional meets, and then captured our school's first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in a driving snowstorm in Madison. The junior varsity boys also finished the season undefeated with a record of 30-0. This also included five invitational titles. , _ The girls team was rated No. 4 in the state through most of the season, and challenged No. 1 rated I-ennimore in every invitational. They finished second in the Regional and third in the Sectional meet, missing a berth in the state meet by one place. They compiled a best ever 36-13 record and broke all team time records. The future for our cross country teams looks bright even though some very dedicated seniors will be graduating. We will be returning a talented and hard working group of underclassmen who are determined to continue our winning tradition. UNDEFEATED STATE CHAMPIONS This Section Is Dedicated To Kent Ruppert, James Schuetz, Dave Hirsbrunner, Todd Johnson, Bob Cul- len, Kirk Evenstad, and Dale Kelly Who by putting in the miles, working hard, and believing in themselves and each other, met the challenges that faced them to win our school's first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. S3 FOOTBALL The Redbirds most memorable highlights of the season were the 6-0 overtime victory over Cassville to break the 22 game losing streak and the 40-6 victory over the Dodgeville Dodgers which posted 2 school records. The 1985 Redbirds rushed for 374 yards capping the old mark of 366 which was held since 1962. They also broke the combined rushing and passing record which was 442, held since 1962, by three yards. The team went 6-0 in dual meets in Invitational competition, the girls defeated teams from Sauk Prairie, Monona Grove, Milton, Janesville Parker, and many other larger schools. Team records were set on all events. Many times during the sea- son the team established a new school record for total points scored. The team was led by senior captain Kristin Osterday and sen- ior letterman Jenny Surga. Coach Irene Smith finished her 16 year gymnastic coaching career on a successful note. 61 VARSITY BOYS The boys varsity basketball players have had a season of on the job training . With only Todd Johnson (Senior) with any quality varsity experience, the other seniors (Tom Curry, Scott Evans, Nick Ruf, and Mark Whalen) and the first-year varsity crew of Juniors, have gone through a learning experience that has been characterized by many frustrating ups and downs. Individual and team improvement has been seen in the second half of the season leading into tourna- ment play. The solid foundation is being completed for a bright 1986-87 season which will see the potential for no less than ten returning experienced varsity players. Left to Right: Scott Evans, Nick Ruf, Tom Curry, Tim Lancaster, Mark Wha- len, Brad Smith, Shawn Hauser, Tom Whitford, Todd Johnson, Kurt Schad- walt, Scott Burke, Tom Hendrickson, Kirk Evenstad, Matt Walter, Tim Curry, Dave Hirsbrunner. Boys Basketball team was composed of 6 Sophomores and 4 Freshmen. The team was young and lacked experience in certain areas. The goal of the team this year was to develop good work habits, while developing sills necessary for Varsity competition. The members of this year's squad took positive steps to improve their basketball skills. The success of this team will not be determined by their win-loss record, but rather by how much improvement was made as an individual and team player. w Row 1 (L to R) Ron Schwartz, Jeremy Mosely, Marc Meighan. Row 2 Renee Reichling, Anita Reichling, Cindy Coulthard, Jenny Surga. Row 3 Mike Loken, Coach Osterday, Shawn Wilson. Darlington High School entered a team in the 1985-86 Wisconsin Academic Decathlon compe- tition. This was the first Redbird team to partici- pate. Team members were all tested in the area of economics, language and literature, fine arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Six tests of fifty questions were each given in thirty min- ute test periods. The team consisted of three stu- dents at three different levels determined by grade point averages. The top two scores at each level were totaled to make the team score. The Redbirds scored well at the November qualifying test held in Fennimore. The team fell a little short of qualifying for regional competition, but made an excellent showing for a first time effort. 82 Row 1 (L to R) Tony Elzen, David Austin, Rick Ward, Steve Winslow. Jennifer Reichling, Lisa Steger, Julie Flanagan, Thea Larson, Cheryl Chambers, Anita Reichling, and Bob Cullen. 83 Forensics Talk, Talk, Talk, The Forensics team was hard at work this year preparing for the forensics contests. A very good turn out offered a well balanced, talented team. The season started with the local contest on Feb. 3. Locals was run as a workshop since all of the groups were able to advance to Sub-District Competition. After locals, things got competitive through Sub-District, District, and State. The Red- bird speakers did a super job of represent- ing the school this year. A special thanks goes to the coaches. So, THANK-YOU: Mrs. Coulthard, Mr. Saxe, Mrs. McIntyre, and Mr. Rassman. The year was eventful and like Halley's Comet has come and gone quickly, but no other year will ever be quite the same as this one. erf.
