Together Time or Student Life, is a new division of the Pekatonika Yearbook. While school is in ses- sion, students associated with each other in classes, in the Perch or cafe- teria, while competing with each other in sports, or club activities, or just while walking together in the halls. But what happens after the 3:26 dismissal bell has rung, and all the buses have been loaded? Does student life end? We didn't think that was possible, so Together Time focuses in on students while they are outside of school, which may include working time, dating time, recreation time, or just plain fun time, Students may only be students from August through June and from 8:10 to 3:26; but a yearbook is intended to include 24 hours in a day, 365 days a year. Therefore, we found it necessary to go outside of school, to picture our student body during their Together Time. The team was the biggest ever, with 27 on the J.V. team and 17 players on the varsity team. One of the big highlights of the season was when the var- sity team defeated Lancaster in one of their games for the first time. Another big event of the season was the arrival of the new volleyball standards. After defeating Iowa Grant at the subregionals, the Red- birds advanced to the regionals. Darlington defeated Dodge- ville twice and Prairie du Chien once. The team was then up against Lancaster. Despite a lot of Redbird effort and the cheering of the many fans who accompanied the team to Cuba City, the Redbirds lost both games, but placed second. The Varsity Captain was Mary Kay Wedig, and the Jun- ior Varsity's Most Valuable Player was Pam Glendenning. Both girls were elected by their teammates. They moved off to a fine start and played Iowa Grant at home for what proved to be the title game. They came out on the short end of the score, 6-0, in a tightly contested game. They then finished the season with two victories to end their season in second place. Many valuable lessons were learned. Hopefully, in the year of the 200th birth- day, we can reaffirm our principles of achievement. The two teams, the dirty dozen were Baranczyk's Bombers coached by Ray Baranczyk and Bennett's Women coached by Brian Bennett. The girls had only one week to prepare for the big game. In this week they learned several offensive plays and a few defensive positions. The day they had all been waiting for had finally arrived. Both teams felt they could walk off with a victory. But not so with the scoreboard. They shared the victory with a tie. Both teams had a long, hard- hitting game. They played a full game of four quar- ters with each quarter being 8 minutes. Officiating was done by Randy Buschor and Rick Yeazle. The officials were carried off the field by the dirty dozen immediately following the end of the game. Twttom'ROwVK i a- : len, L. Rasmussen, M. With a nucleus of seven returning lettermen from last year's squad, the members went through hours of practice to mold themselves into a cohe- sive team. By the time the sea- son opened, they had prepared themselves for the many differ- ent challenges which would con- front them; with the hopes of being rewarded with victories. The J.V. squad was small in quantity of members, but un- der the coaching of Mr. Petta, they hoped to develop a large quantity of determination, courage, patience, and sacri- fice to overcome the obstacles which they would encounter and have a successful season. Even though the team seemed to be plauged by injuries and other problems, dedicated members were quick to fill in the empty spots to keep the team on its feet. With many of the young mem- bers acquiring wrestling experience this year, combined with an excellent coaching staff, the Redbird wrestlers hope to become even closer to the top next year. The JV team began to learn the compulsory routines while other members started piecing their superior moves in- to optional routines. Although some nerves were on edge as the first meet drew closer, everyone who competed was well prepared. The Darlington FHA chapter hosted the FHA Mother-Daughter Anniversary party on Feb. 6, in honor of the 30th Anniversary. The program consisted of a welcome by Pres. Diane Gordon, and a few words by Mrs. Lois Gordon, and Mrs. Stevenson, who taught here for 27 years. Speaches were given by Mrs. Ivey, SakiChan; and a series of skits were performed re- constructing the past 30 years. The Soph, class raffled off their quilts and the winners were Mrs. Ivey and Mrs. Glendenning. Mrs. Lindell also announced that Elizabeth Ruf won the General Mills Family Leader of Tomorrow Award. The candle lighting and tea concluded a very enjoyable program. COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM PROVIDES JOBS The work-study program provided students with an opportunity to prepare themselves with different skills through jobs available at the high school level. An important aspect was establishing good working relationships with the fac- ulty and staff, as well as with the student body. Students worked in various depart- ments, depending upon their area of in- terest. During the year, students were placed with the Guidance, Spanish, Mu- sic, English, Home Ec., Phy. Ed. and Social Studies Departments. Others work- ed with teachers in the Industrial Arts, Agriculture, Art, and Science areas. Both the kitchen and custodial staff co- operated with the program. Cindy Edge is the CAP co- ordinator. Dav 3. IOC Day 4, 8B Ocupado is cer- tainly an appropriate way to describe the Spanish Club. Members attended many Span- ish presentations in- cluding a poetry read- ing at the UW, a Misa Criolla followed by a Spanish supper at Loras College, a special film on the Bullfight and Tertulia and two Spanish plays — one at the Play Circle in Ma- dison, and the other at Clarke College. After the return home, a Spanish pot luck supper was organi- zed by the parents of the participants. At that time, students had the opportunity of sharing their experiences with the community. Slides and movies, as well as souvenirs brought by the students were shown. DARLINGTON A.F.S. HOSTED SAKI CHAN A The only gift is a portion of thyself wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. There are many people in communities throughout the country' who are willing and able to make such a gift by sharing their talents, skills, empathy and interests in the re- warding work of AFS Chapters. Darlington High School is very fortunate to have both an adult and student chapter. The AFS Club held many activities throughout the year. An AFS luncheon was held to acquaint the visiting students to Darlington and to meet the AFS'ers of the surrounding towns. Fund raisers for the club were collected through AFS pictures and AFS pizza sales. Darlington also sponsored an AFS weekend which enabled some high school students to experience AFS for a weekend. Our students exchanged places with those of another town for an entire weekend to experience the different ways of life and to meet new people. AFS is not just an another club it is an entirely different world. Seven girls attended a summer camp at Rockford and brought back many new ideas that led to a successful year. At camp, the girls won the poster competition and received one first and three seconds in the routine competition. Hard practices lasting from 2 to 5 hours per week were spent perfecting routines for perfor- mances during the football, basketball, and wrestling seasons. In order to raise money for their new sweaters, the girls held a bake sale and a car wash. Hard work and a lot of cooperation all mixed in with fun left the girls with memories of being a ’’school spirit getter. Just as last year, doughnut sales were a big success. This year the FHA celebrated their 30th anniversary and made anniversary cookbooks to sell for the occasion. Each FHA member submitted two recipes. In addition to a light brunch and entertainment, the sophomore members made some quilts which were raffled at the anniversary party. The Sweetheart Dance went over very well, with live entertainment by the musical group Sassy . The Spring Style Show brought on plenty of new faces and many color- ful ensembles. As Future Homemakers of America, the girls would like to congratulate Mrs. Lindell and Mrs. Ivey as ad- visors for a job well done. The 1976-77 fiscal year for FFA started with the annual Spring Banquet, which included the installation of the offi- cers. During the summer, the training session was held at Jag Lake where the officers planned for the upcoming year. Fall events included the FFA com plot, candy sales, fruit sales, and furnishing programs for football games. Winter events included parents night, pancake dinner, the apprecia- tion dinner and the creed and public speaking contests. The main spring event was planning the crops to be planted on the FFA farm and getting them in. One of the main goals of the FFA is to learn by doing. There were many opportunities for the members to develop their speaking abilities, learn to associate with other people, and also to learn and work on the FFA farm. The FFA gives its members the chance to grow and develop themselves while in and out of school. It teaches them that the unity of an organization depends on each and every one of its mem- bers. Hopefully, more students will take advantage of FFA. Advisor Mr. Foley conducting an FFA meeting. Day 4, 1A SPEAK THE SPEECH, I PRAY YOU, AS I PRONOUNCED IT TO YOU. You work your way from a local level to a state level by par- ticipating in the category of your choice. This takes a lot of hard work and time. The years Local Festival was held February 10, all participants performed very well, as almost everyone received an A, and were able to proceed to the Sub-District at Dodge ville. Ms. Roethke (Head Coach), M?. Polizzi, and Mr. Manthei (Asst. Coaches) coached the Fore- nsics team. They had many new ideas for everyone, which helped them before they actually presented it to the judge. The long awaited day to be called upper classmen has now arrived for the Class of 78 . The Juniors showed much en- thusiasm to work on their Home- coming float. It paid off well for them as they received a sec- ond with the title, ,fWe're Dead Set On a Victory. County Government Day offered an experience for the Juniors. Twenty-one were se- lected to attend. The highlight of the Junior year was of course the Prom. They met the prom with ex- citement and determination. Everyone worked very hard, but had a good time while at it.
