DHS Welcomes First AFS Student. LEA KURRI-R1UTTA, from Finland is an eighteen year old senior. She lives with Mr. and Mrs. Bowden Curtis and family and, in her words, she loves them . She is an only child and before coming to the U.S., she lived with her mother, aunt and grandfather. Lea commented that in the U.S., people always seem to be in a hurry. She is greatly impressed by all the cars in the U.S. and, while in New York, Kennedy Airport impressed her also. The religious freedom in the U.S. was very much of a change for Lea. In Finland, 94% of the population is Lutheran and in the U.S. there are so many different religions. She also said that in Finland, racial discrimination is non-existent Her hometown is Pori which has a population of 70,000. Lea's school in Finland was very formal. Informally greeting a teacher was forbidden. When asked her opinion of DHS, she replied, I feel good because of the free atmosphere. I feel perfectly at home.
