We learned to be natural and, in most cases, honest with each other. This is summed up in the last part of our theme-- We like being us . Only after we have learned to be us , can we understand the full meaning of the first part-- We like living . By living is meant not only the fun-to-do things of life —dances, dates, making friends, traveling, or getting presents for Christmas or your birthday from someone special, etc.--but also the hard-to-bear things that happen to us--the death of a relative or friend, cramming for exams, losing your job, or having your best friend move away. Because these are part of everyone's life, learning to accept them and recog- nizing the hidden good in them can only help to make the years of the future more pleasant and re- warding. And we can only learn to accept reality when we have thrown away our false personalities and learned to be ourselves. The pictures on this and the following pages show some of the many phases of school life in DHS. Sports events, dances, Homecoming festivities, working on projects, crazy fads and our wild Grub Days , phy ed classes with the uneven bars, the one- act play that competed at the state contest, and getting out of school for home football games are all represented here and were welcome diversions from the school day. 4 . ..AND WE LIKE BEING US 5 DHS Welcomes First AFS Student. LEA KURRI-R1UTTA, from Finland is an eighteen year old senior. She lives with Mr. and Mrs. Bowden Curtis and family and, in her words, she loves them . She is an only child and before coming to the U.S., she lived with her mother, aunt and grandfather. Lea commented that in the U.S., people always seem to be in a hurry. She is greatly impressed by all the cars in the U.S. and, while in New York, Kennedy Airport impressed her also. The religious freedom in the U.S. was very much of a change for Lea. In Finland, 94% of the population is Lutheran and in the U.S. there are so many different religions. She also said that in Finland, racial discrimination is non-existent Her hometown is Pori which has a population of 70,000. Lea's school in Finland was very formal. Informally greeting a teacher was forbidden. When asked her opinion of DHS, she replied, I feel good because of the free atmosphere. I feel perfectly at home. As we leave DHS and think back on all the things that have happened to us here, we will realize what a great and important experience it has been, and we'll say with pride, I was a student at Darlington High School . Our Senior float-- Our Coach Will Lead Us To Vic- tory --won first prize in the Homecoming competi- tion. The Senior football players had unusual nick- names as well as grid-iron talent. c L A S S O F 71 Juniors Await Final Year. Thursday afternoon found all the classes busily finishing their floats for the 1969 Homecoming which tradition- ally began the night before the game with the parade starting at 8:00. Following the parade was the rousing pep rally held at the fairgrounds. After the presentation of the Queen and her court, Captain Bill and Queen Chris lit the big L symbolizing our rival, the Lancaster Arrows. After the snake dance around the flaming L the pep rally ended as the senior football players stomped out the remains of the smoldering L . Instead of having the traditional formal Senior Ball the seniors decided to work together with the Jaycees and invite a famous rock group to perform in concert. The concert took place on January 17, 1970 in the high school gym with the nationally famous group the STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK playing for two hours, and the Bowery Boys as the backup band who also played for two hours. The STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK played such well known hits as Incense and Peppermints and Three in the Morning and Three at Night to a crowd of close to a thousand listeners. Cooperation and in- genuity contributed to the immense success of the Senior Concert. 56 The STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK entertained for four hours, alternating with the very popular BOWERY BOYS. Freshman Selected President Kim Havens and Sweetheart Diane Lindsay. On Friday, Oct. 2, the FFA Sweetheart dance was held. The Redbird consisted of special features, such as pictures of the Homecoming Court and Prom Court, and also reported on the individual cross-country and wrestling meets, and basketball and football games as the year went on. Cartoons illustrating school life were drawn by Lori Oertley and Tuddi Howery and added humor to the newspaper. Gossip columns and poems written by various students and teachers made the Redbird a very interesting student publication. Co-Editors-In-Chief: Chris Craig, Duane Jorgenson. The Pekatonika staff, under the editorship of Karen Wendt, had a busy year trying to meet deadlines, writing copy, and typing assignments. New this year was advisor Mrs. Ahn. Mrs. Ahn, Karen, and Assistant Editor Lois Hanson have diligently striven to edit a better yearbook. Money for the publication of the yearbook was partly furnished from a concession stand at the home basket- ball games. Business Manager Kathy Erpenbach took charge of its operation. A new idea was used this year to help support the Pekatonika. Girls were allowed to wear shorts or slack, and boys could wear shorts on the days of home football games. Those students who did, had to pay thirty-cents to the Pekatonika for the privilege. In this way, the Pekatonika staff earned more money to improve the yearbook. Last year DHS won the sub-district trophy at Lancaster and sent two representatives to the state contest. This year, as usual, many turned out to participate. There were many categories from which to choose such as original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, poetry reading, prose reading, significant speeches, four minute speeches, and of course play acting. Mrs. Kay Johnston, who gave her time and patience helping these people, was this year's forensic coach. FRONT ROW--Jane Bryson, Jane Charlton, Joan Dein- inger, Suzanne King. The Golf Squad the Largest in the History of DHS Went On To Shatter Two Records The 1969 Golf Squad was the largest golf team in the history of Darlington's five year golf history. This was a new experience for the freshmen but they did very well in competition golf. Of the twenty members, two were seniors, six were juniors, six were sophomores, six were freshmen. The team posted a 5--4 record in regular action and 6--7 on the whole for the year, with victories over Dodgeville, Fennimore, Iowa Grant, Mineral Point, and Hannover. The 1969 team set new DHS records. For one the squad broke the former record at an away course set at Platteville and Mt. Horeb and Jim Charlton tied the individual record at our local course with a 35. Coach Gary Ringen worked hard with the boys this year and they improved as the year progressed. The team was young and valuable experience was gained by the underclassmen. Varsity Squad FRONT ROW: Steve Powell, Bob Donahoe, Chuck McKinlay, Phil Bryson. This was the first year that DHS had a summer base- ball schedule. This was a much better arrangement because the players got a chance to play more con- ference games. We had an exceptional team this year with four returning lettermen. With the help of our co-captains, Tom Wonders and Bob Finley, we had one of our better baseball seasons. We opened our season by playing Dodge ville in a non-conference game. This was a very close game but Darlington came out on the short end and lost by one run. Some of the other teams the Redbirds played were Monroe, Lancaster, Warren, Galena, Platteville, and Dubuque. The district tournament was held at the Darlington field. The participating teams were: Lancaster playing New Glarus and Dar- lington playing Platteville. Lancaster and Darlington emerged as the victors of the tournament. With the great pitching of Bob Finley and the hitting ability of the players, the Redbirds moved on to regional tournament. This event was held in Brookfield. Our team was defeated in the tournament and did not move on. The Redbirds baseball squad is looking forward to an even better season this summer with twelve returning lettermen. Most of this progress is due to the hard work on the part of the coaches and the wrestlers. Mr. Craig Warrick, our head coach, taught the team some new moves and the team per- fected them with ease and great agility. Coach War- rick made the wrestlers work a lot harder but it all payed off. The team itself won only two of their meets, but a number of the wrestlers won many of their individual matches. Mr. Dinges, the assistant coach kept them working and did a lot to help the team in their third year of conference competition.
