HEY! WHAT'S everybody doing?? I'm still studying says Pat Dirksen. SOPHOMORE APPETITES Days of Among the students of Darlington High School are the hopes of our world for tomorrow. Within these walls lies the potential to build, create, and mani- fest a world in need of our services. We begin our high school days as inexperienced youth, eager to fulfill lifetime dreams and ambi- tions. Through the efforts of those who care--par- ents, teachers, friends--this four-year period marks a time of growth--a maturing in knowledge as well as in age. The world offers a multitude of opportunities to anyone who wishes to reach out for his goal. Life is a vast expanse of mystery and adventure. There is much to be ours for the asking. 4 must be satisfied. Our Lives When the beautiful princess kissed the toad and trans- formed him into a charming prince, a story ended-- quite happily. For some, graduation day marks a happy ending to a four-year story, for others this day begins only another phase in the cycle known as life. Whatever our high school days entail, whatever mem- ories we recount of the important time of our life, will vary. We will remember the days of our youth when am- bition was ours. We will recall days of joy and those that were not so merry, everlasting friendships that defy the march of time, moments of thoughtful silence and gid- dish laughter,--triumphant realizations of a truth. For each of us our four years of high school must end, as they did for 98 seniors in the Class of '69. These were impor- tant hours, times, moments, but truly among the most important-- days of our lives. John Suthers, comb in hand, contemplates the idea of 20 girls in his next class. 5 FRONT ROW: Junior Attendants; Dennis Bedward, Christine Hendirckson, John McKeon, Beth Cullen. London Towne Comes Alive in '68 London Towne was the theme picked for the 1968 Junior Prom. The gymnasium was trans- formed into a miniature towne of streamers and lamp posts. The evening began as the Royal Couple, Jane Lindsay and John Taylor, entered London Towne under the famed London Bridge. The climax of the evening took place at the stroke of ten when Jane was crowned Queen of the 1968 Junior Prom. The Royal Couple then led everyone in the Grand March to the music of Paul Hemmer and his Orchestra. At the stroke of midnight the gates to London Towne were closed. However, the evening was far from finished. Many attended post-prom parties, and only the coming of dawn ended the excitement. The memories never end and the Prom of 1968 will live forever in our hearts. King John and Queen Jane lead the prom attenders in the Grand March. The Woman Is Required To Pay According to tradition on Sadie Hawkins day, girls are re- quired to serve humbly their dates for the evening. There- fore, the woman is required to pay. The annual Sadie Hawkins dance was held Friday night, September 27, 1968. The high school gym was gaily decorated with many kites to correlate with the band, BEN FRANKLIN AND THE KITES. Four of these kites represented the four Twirp King candidates. At 9: 30 Steve Monson, senior candidate, was crowned the 1968 Twirp King. Each candidate received a gift of candy for repre- senting their class, and the King received a tie clasp. The dance drew a large crowd. Tom Belzer, lead singer of the group Ben Franklin and the Kites, sang many popular songs. 8 TWIRP KING Steve Monson and his escort, FHA President Jane Lindsay. SENIOR CLASS president, Larry Ingwell, crowns Sally Thomas, Homecoming Queen of 1968. Homecoming Festivities Marked by 20—0 Victory Homecoming 68” consisted of many gala festivities. Thursday evening at 8:00 the Homecoming parade be- gan. The floats that represented the hard work and team effort of all who helped decorate them passed by the spectators, along with the school bands, the cheerleaders, and the Queen and her court. Following the parade was the bonfire and pep rally which stirred up the spirit of the many Redbird fans. Friday afternoon was the scene for our victorious Homecoming game with Prairie Du Chien. During half-time Queen Sally and her attendants were presented to the audience, and the D.H.S. band performed for them and their fans. With a final winning score of 20--0, many returned to the gym that night for the climax to the Homecoming week end. The grand coronation ceremony took place at 9:30 p.m. the attendants were escorted by four football letterman, which followed the presentation of all of the senior Foot- ball Letterman. Queen Sally and Captain Dan Weigel then appeared and she was crowned as D.H.S. Homecom- ing Queen of 1968. FFA “Sweetheart Dance On the night of October 25, the doors of Darlington High School were opened to welcome returning alumni and students to the 1968 FFA Sweetheart dance. Music was provided for the event by the New Counts, a local rock group. At ten o'clock the candidates were escorted to the crowning area by the officers of the FFA Chapter. The ballots of the attending boys were tallied and announcer Denny Malott named Sophomore atten- dant, Beth Thomas, Sweetheart '68. The queen and all her attendants then led the Sweet- heart dance. Queen Beth and her court each received a compli- mentary box of candy from the FFA Chapter. Senior Ball fcw69 On the evening of December 21, 1968, flicker- ing candles, glistening silver bells and gaily decorated Christmas trees set the mood for the social event of the winter season. At the stroke of nine, the doors opened and admitted DHS students and returning alumni to the land of Silver Bells.” The Royal Court led the traditional Royal Dance. As time passed, many anxiously awaited the moment when Jean Loken would be crowned queen of the 1968 Senior Ball. Escorted by King Bob McGranahan and her royal court of honor, Queen Jean led the traditional Royal Dance fol- lowing her coronation. Paul Hemmer and his orchestra provided the music for the gala fes- tivity. At the close of the evening, many left for post-Ball parties, souvenirs in hand. King Bob McGranahan crowned Jean Loken queen during the coronation ceremonies. ATTENDANTS: Mike McDermott and Kristy Mottley. ATTENDANTS: Larry Ingwell and Pat Johnson. 91 ; J - M Hi •r J m % • •' J • 4 A ;■ ‘ A 1 t 15 The Carnival: A New Happening On the evening of August 30, music could be heard resounding through the high school gym. It was a fund-raising project to finance the school newspaper issued six times during the school year and given free to each high school student. In previous years a carnival was held; however, this year the usual games and decorated booths were con- verted to a teenage dance. Two hundred and ninety- four students danced to the beat of the Marquis, a local group from WSU-Platteville. The change was prompted by the desire to update the fund-raising event from the usual game-fest, at- tended primarily by younger children, to an interest- ing high school function. A MODERN version of the waltz is demon- strated by Tom Wonders and Karen Oertly. DURING THE intermission, Linda Salathe takes advan- tage of the refreshments. TAKE MY picture was the favorite cry of carnival-attenders Tony Schumacher, Larry Ingwell and John Taylor. 16 Student Council Governs The Student Council began their activities of the 1968-69 school year on September 26. The first meeting was called to order by newly elected President Walter West. By means of campaigns and campaign speeches, the Student Council officers for this past year were elected by the entire Student body on the basis of their ability and leadership rather than by the Student Council alone. During the course of the year, the Student Council took part in the organization and creation of the Homecom- ing Bonfire. As part of their governing duties, they helped formulate a dress code for student dress. Plans were made for joining either the National or State Association of Student Councils, which may be a consideration in future years. STUDENT COUNCIL president, Walter West, helped out at many school activities. FRONT ROW: Kris Mottley, Walter West, Don Andrews, Bruce Ward, Bob Short, Eugene Stauffacher, Kerry Black. Another first was the operation of the coat check at basketball games. This proved quite successful as a service and as a money-making activity. Athletic programs were provided and dis- tributed for football and basketball games as they have been in the past. FFA Calendars were sponsored by Darlington Milling and helped to tell the FFA story. The social events of the Chapter included an FFA Sweetheart Dance, Homecoming float, Annual FFA Parents'Night, and the Annual FFA Banquet. Mr. Wood, as advisor, helps eft-editors Dristy Mottley and Walter West check assignments and plan the dummy copy each six weeks. The Redbird has not been entered in any school newspaper contests as yet, but it has been on display in McCormick Place in Chicago and is a reg- istered member of the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists. The paper is printed by the Lafayette County News printing office. This is Mr. Wood's twenty-first year as Redbird advisor. He has been advisor on the Pekatonika staff for three years before he worked with Miss Connelly, Miss Collins, and Mrs. Benedict to organize the first Redbird in 1948. At that time, he had to ask local businessmen to sponsor the paper in order to finance it; but now, school activ- ities such as the Cabaret and the Carnival help pay for its printing. A modern process of printing and a better quality of paper are used for the Redbird today. LEADING LADY, Becky Long, tries to persuade her leading counterpart, Duane Jorgenson, to remain at Sleepy Hollow. Music Department Presents Musical Comedy On three successive nights, October 27, 28, and 29, 1968, the Darlington High School Music Department pre- sented a musical comedy entitled Mr. Crane. The play was a take-off from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, in which an awkward, gawky school teacher, Ichabod Crane, arrived at Sleepy Hollow and fell in love with Katrina Van Tassel. His rival, Tom Bones, drover Ichabod out of town. The hilarious pre- sentation, however, had a happy ending. In the play, Ike Crane came to teach at the Sleepy Hollow School for Young Ladies, where Kathy Van Tassel also taught. Deciding that Kathy is the girl for him, Ike outwitted Tom Bones and won Kathy's heart. The production was directed by Mr. Rafferty and Mr. Wood and featured Becky Long as Kathy Van Tassel, Duane Jorgenson as Ike Crane, and Bill Stauffacher as Tom Bones. The bulk of the load was carried by Dean Chellevold, Jim Powell, Phil Bryson, and Jim Charlton. These boys consistently shot rounds of 40 or under to lead the team in their winning season. The 8--4 record was the best ever compiled by the golfers since golf was first started in the spring of 1965. Much of the credit for this progress must be given to Mr. Ringen who has been coach since the first year. Mr. Ringen is expecting another outstanding year in 1969. Absentee--Tcm Wonders. Baseball Season Marked by No-Hitter RUGGED EQUIPMENT is needed for the game of base- ball. The baseball season was highlighted by Bob Finley's 8--0 no-hit pitching performance over Iowa Grant. It was the second shutout of the year for Bob and just one of his many fine pitching jobs. Pitching wasn't everything though as often the team failed to get those extra runs that could mean a victory. The team rallied in tournament play to get revenge on Mineral Point and then went on to win two more before losing to Dodgeville. The team was coached by Mr. Meyers who took over the head coaching job left by Mr. Ruf and by Mr. Johnston. Coaching StalT Retiring Coach Ruf This year for the first time since 1945, baseball was not coached by Mr. Ruf. Mr. Ruf came to Darling- ton in 1936 as an American History and citizenship teacher. He also helped coach football, basketball, softball, and track. His teaching career was inter- rupted in 1942 by the war. He came back from service in 1945 and started out as head coach of basketball and baseball. He was also an assistant coach in football. Mr. Ruf can boast seven championship baseball teams during his twenty-three year coaching career. When asked what his favorite memories were, Coach Ruf replied, Coaching with Wadsy and Geo and the wonderful athletes who contributed to our success 1962 marked Mr. Ruf's final year as a football coach in DHS. According to Mr. Ruf, there are no bests in winning teams or seasons. 59 _ J§i 9 91 «f . 6ir __ S 56 4t84 S73 £68 £50 jg .5 9% 7%. % 2 6f r. 6r, « '% 7It 2t-85 531 52. 40. si S3 ..0Of-47 The 1968 Darlington FRONT ROW: Steve Monson, Tom Wonders, Greg Pickett, Larry Saalsaa, John Side, Bob Finley. Redbirds Lead the League in Defense Left to right: Head Coach Bertolini, Assistant Coaches Ringen, Glass, and Johnston. The Darlington Redbirds, riding the strength of the league's No. 1 defense, came within one game of a conference championship. The defense had allowed only 12 points in the first six games, but the seventh game spoiled it all. That game matched the league's two co-leaders, Boscobel and Darlington, and Dar- lington lost. The loss knocked Darlington out of the title race, but they came back in the final game of the season to beat Platteville and take second in standings. The team's 7--1 record was the best for Head Coach Jack Bertolini since his championship team of 1962. The scoring for the team was paced by Bob Finley who placed second in the league's scoring race with 54 points. Finley along with Larry Ingwell and Jerry Bartels were selected for the all-conference team. Tony Schumacher made the all-conference 2nd team and Phil Bryson received honorable mention. 62 Tom Wonders completes one of many extra point kicks. THE MIGHTY Redbirds plan their strategy. The wrestlers finished at the tail end of almost every meet, but there is a lot of hope for the future. Out of the sixteen boys who earned wrestling letters, ten were sophomores and two were freshmen. The experience they will bring back next year is sure to improve the wrestling record. Of course, the team will miss the graduating seniors Bob Short, Nick Burke, and Jim Peterson. At the end of the season, Nick and Jim were elected captains for the season; and Jim was elected the most valuable wrestler. 65 FRONT ROW: Phil Bryson, Steve Powell, Randy Erickson, Kevin Curry, Steve Tuescher, Tom Wonders, Coach Meyers. Freshmen The basketball team led by senior Bob Finley ended the regular season with a 6--6 conference record. Included were an upset victory over previously unbeaten Dodgeville in their own gym and an overtime win against Mt. Horeb. Bob Finley had a career high 44 points against Highland and ended the season with 414 points. Phil Bryson scored 198 points during the year. The Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams compiled records indicating future basketball prosperity. The sophomores, after an opening 1 point loss to Campion, won the next 14 games in a row before bowing to Dodgeville's JVs. They ended the season with a 16--2 record. Cross Country, a Test of Endurance Captain Don Andrews In the fall of 1968, a new sport was added to Darlington High School. The new sport was Cross Country and was coached by Mr. Karrmann. In its first year of existence, 19 boys turned out for the sport, which is a test of both endurance and speed. The team was led by senior Don Andrews, who was elected honorary captain at the close of the season. Darlington used the golf course for its home meets, where they set up a course of 2.2 miles. Although the team didn't have a good season record wise, a lot of individual experience was gained. 69 FRONT ROW: Tom Ellefson, Chuck McKinley, Chuck Barnard, Chuck Eustice, Jim Lembezeder, Randy Erickson, Mike McGowan, Steve Powell, Kerry Black, Nick Burke. Lettermen's Club ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: Mr. Steven Karrmann. Beginning this year the lettermen of D.H.S. joined together in a club to promote athletic and scho- lastic achievement and to further better relations with the school. The Club is under the direction of the Athletic Department and serves as a status symbol, a social, and a service organization. The Lettermen's Club formed this year because it was felt that last year's club was inactive. As president, Jerry Bartels hopes to lead the Club to the fulfill- ment of their goals, which consist of a code for the wearing and displaying of official school letters in the proper manner and to promote school interest in athletic achievements. Athletic director in charge of coordinating athletic programs for the Junior and Senior Highs this year is Mr. Steven Karrmann.
