Nelsor handles prob- lems of the entire school system, yet he never loses touch with the students and is always ready to listen to their problems and give help. The breaking of ground for the new Darlington Community High School on October 26 was preceded and followed by an unbelievable amount of hard work by Mr. Nelson, the Board of Education and the members of the Citizens’ Commit- tee on Better Education. That they were rewarded for their efforts is shown by their smiles at the cere- mony. Shovels were plied by Mr. Nel- son, Mr. Virtue, Board Treasurer; Mr. Johnson, Board President; and Mr. Joseph Donahoe of the Citizens’ Committee. To the left of Mr. Nelson is Board Member, Mr. Curry, and the Rev- erend John Baumann of the Citi- zens’ Committee. To Mr. Johnson’s left are Board Members Mr. Burke and Mr. Lee. Continuing left is Mr. Ralph Hass, Construction Superin- tendent, and Mr. A1 Kraemer, Gen- eral Contractor. Pep Club Member Vevoted Themselves to Our Athletic Team From early fall before the. first football game, until late spring after the. last baseball and track event, the IMS Pep Club worked for the team. They backed the Redbirds with pep meetings before garner, displaying posters, sponsoning bus tfiips to out- otown games, helping with the ban- quet ho no fling athletes, and doing all they could to promote school spirit. Membefis showed theifi pfiide in the tfiophies won by Redbirds by keeping them clean and bfiightly polished. The Pep Club backed the cheefileadefis and bought theifi uniform with funds fiaised by the girls’ hafid wofik selling hot dogs, candy, potato chips, and pop during football games. A newcomefi to the VIIS Pep Club this yeafi was Rosy Redbird. This counterpart of Wisconsin’s Sucky Badger was the creation o$ Linda Steger, who designed and made the costume worn by Cheri Howery, our first Rosy Redbird. We all enjoyed the part played by this delightful bird.
