THIS WONDERFUL YEAR This was the year that the United States began penetrating outer space and put several satellites into orbit There was a feeling that the prospects of reaching the moon were assured and we began to feel confident that human beings eventually would be able to go to the moon and to other planets The narnes Thor, Vanguard, Explorer, Discoverer, Atlas, Nike Zeus, and Pioneer IV were some ofthe narnes given to our space missiles Our drawings in this year's book are symbolic of the 1959 conception of people prepared for interplanetary travel This burst of sc1ent1f1c achievement in the United States helped relieve the criticism of American schools and quiet the charges hurled against them last year that they were inferior to RHSS1a'S schools This was the year of the cold, cold winter with the heavy snows We had weather of a severity that had not been matched for over forty years This was the year that our school rose to new heights in basketball achieve ment We almost won the championship in our conference Our team t1ed for second place Our football team held its leadership and captured the South western League Conference Championship Our baseball team won the championship inthe spring of 1958 for the second year in a row DHS students brought home the usual share of high honors in track, music, and forensics For all ofus DHS students this was the most wonderful year yet a year which we have tried to preserve for you in pictures in the pages of this PEKATONIKA of 1959 We hope it will help keep this wonderful year of 1959 fresh in your memory Carol Schaber , Editor This was the year that Alaska and Hawaii became our 49th and 50th States .
