1959 PEKA UNIKA Darf1'ngion Sclzoof DdV!7.HgfOW, uzsconsin ZX I L 1 .516 W , ,Q 5 1. gf' THIS WONDERFUL YEAR This was the year that the United States began penetrating outer space and put several satellites into orbit There was a feeling that the prospects of reaching the moon were assured and we began to feel confident that human beings eventually would be able to go to the moon and to other planets The narnes Thor, Vanguard, Explorer, Discoverer, Atlas, Nike Zeus, and Pioneer IV were some ofthe narnes given to our space missiles Our drawings in this year's book are symbolic of the 1959 conception of people prepared for interplanetary travel This burst of sc1ent1f1c achievement in the United States helped relieve the criticism of American schools and quiet the charges hurled against them last year that they were inferior to RHSS1a'S schools This was the year of the cold, cold winter with the heavy snows We had weather of a severity that had not been matched for over forty years This was the year that our school rose to new heights in basketball achieve ment We almost won the championship in our conference Our team t1ed for second place Our football team held its leadership and captured the South western League Conference Championship Our baseball team won the championship inthe spring of 1958 for the second year in a row DHS students brought home the usual share of high honors in track, music, and forensics For all ofus DHS students this was the most wonderful year yet a year which we have tried to preserve for you in pictures in the pages of this PEKATONIKA of 1959 We hope it will help keep this wonderful year of 1959 fresh in your memory Carol Schaber , Editor This was the year that Alaska and Hawaii became our 49th and 50th States . Our girls today are skilled in all the household arts from baking homemade bread ,es to sewing abound button- - . hl. LAIQNQ oe 'L i The FHA officers pictured at the right have just reason for the smiles they dis play because they have baked cakes like these ma.ny titnes. The smart apparel they wear was probably designed and made by them. From left to right you see Janet McGowan, Presidentg Louise Bigger, Vice Presidentg Marilyn Olson, Sectretarvg Sandra Douglas, Treasurerg Elizabeth McComish, Editorg Carol Hillery, Historian, Gladys Ward, Editorg Jaci Mullen, Song Leaderg and Suzi Goodell, Social Chairman. Our outstanding homemaking student at DHS is Betty Leahy. She earned this title by her excellence in a test and essay written in the y by Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tommorrow test. Betty received the symbolic heart as her award. Betty Leahy It signifies 'Home is where the Heart Is . H Mothers, faculty members, and friends were entertained at the traditional Mother-Daughter Ban- quet i.n December. Under the general chairmanship of Rosie Ruf, the girls served 250 people with the appearance of ease due to careful planning and a high degree of teamwork. After consurning the delicious food served, the group was entertainedby pictures taken in Russia and other parts of Europe by Miss Lynn Gerlach, who was a cadet teacher i.n DHS at the tirne. Miss Emmy Jung, who was the other cadet teacher, played the piano accompaniment for group singing. Our DHS Future Homemakers are well taught in all the fundarnentals of homemaking by Carolyn Hurley Stevenson. ? ' Q Q ff 'HM -M - A nmumamm' B .
