DARLINGTON ACADEMY Darlington, S.C. Jerome Street CONTENTS Theme Time Past Time Present Sports Activities Administration Students Index DEDICATION f All right you guys, I'll tell you what to do________” Harry Mitchell, Soccer Coach, Block D Advisor, Girls Varsity Basketball Coach, Athletic Director and even chaperon to some of our “wild” parties; these are a few of the reasons we love him so much. He has devoted much time and effort to the Academy. Because of all these things we say “Thank you, Mr. Mitchell . I've already told you to get my good side. I taught 'em everything. 3 TIME: WE LOVE IT “Gee Momma, this is really Santa.’’ “You’ve come a long way baby. This popular phrase sums up our school pretty well. The school was established in the middle of the economic slump of 1970. While there were those who were skeptical of the success of the independent school, there were others who supported it wholeheartedly. The past six years have seen both good times and bad times and what mistakes have been made have helped to strengthen rather than weaken our progress. I wonder why all these people keep laughing at us. We’ll get ’em next year! 4 You sure have beautiful hands. AND LIVE IT 'Well which one do you think looks best?’ Oh, I forgot my make-up. My stars, look at that! Those who doubted our ability to achieve our present standard of excellence see that, with time, we have proven ourselves. We have discovered the only way to handle our friend and enemy time, is to love it and live it. Mr. Fasold accepts annual dedication. 5 These kids sure aren’t helping my headache. Hey you guys come help us down, we're stuck. It was a foggy day in May when the students and teachers got together for our annual field day. For the first time we had team events. The Freshmen and Seniors competed against the Sophomores and Juniors in events such as volleyball, softball, and tug-o-war. Other individual events included eggtoss, wheelbarrow race, standing broad jump, running broad jump, hi-jump, 50-yard dash, and 100-yard dash. It was all very exciting. “WILL WE PASS THIS WAY Cindy, Kathy, and Mike are very involved in the music. After dancing, the students take a break and refresh. The Junior Class held their Junior-Senior Prom on April 18, 1975. This was the big event of the year for Darlington Academy. As usual the Juniors had to be on guard all year to keep the prying seniors from discovering the theme of the Prom. The great night finally arrived and the theme, “We May Never Pass This Way Again” was revealed. Surprise? Music for dancing was furnished by August. Those serving were Donna Sansbury, Martha Willis, Ronnie Odom, and Mark Matthews. 12 Bailey Dixon really knows how to dance in the groove. August band member sings with deep feeling to the crowd. OUR EFFORTS ARE REWARDED Our annual Awards Day program was held in the gymnasium the morning of May 29th. At this time students from all 8 departments of the Academy were recognized for special achievements. Robin takes her Physical Fitness award. Seniors receive cords for good grades. The team won six opposing player, games while losing nine and tying one. Again this year, we took an overnight trip to Beaufort and Charleston. Even though the games did not turn out so well. Everyone had a lot of fun. We also went to Columbia, Mt. Pleasant and Hilton Head on other long trips. These trips were much more successful than the overnighter! And don't forget those big letters spelling HOMECOMING 1976 and the other posters. The wind just doesn’t blow them up there. Homecoming is a hassle, but isn't it worth it? The future actors and actresses of America in the Drama Club had their third annual play on April 9. The play, which was called “Outrageous Fortune”, was produced by Miss Phyllis Youmans. Even though working on the Roadrunner Review has been hard work, it has been greatly rewarding for each staff member. The pride of accomplishment shines in every issue. Mr. Hathaway, our company representative gives us directions on how to complete deadlines. Don’t drop it, Mrs. Whittum, it might break! Angela and Lynn choose pictures and write captions. DID YOU KNOW THAT .... NHS EXPANDS The National Honor Society has the reputation of being the school's smallest club. It is so small that each member is an officer. Melissa Severance swings the gavel at the meetings, and when she can’t swing Emily Aimar takes over. Angela Tyner writes the notes in a shorthand that she can't even understand and David Ingram steals the club blind. If the club is small, then the numbe of projects it does is even smaller. To make money at the Halloween Carnival, the NHS, as it is effectively called, captured the hearts and money of the little kids with its pick-up-the-ducks game. The NHS plans to use its hard-earned money to supply the high schoolers with those gorgeous pins that they treasure so. Keep up the good work, fellas. Left: David Ingram. Melissa Severance. Melissa Severance One of the biggest events each year is the election of officers to the Student Forum. It is this school's own little election process. All of the candidates busily make posters to plaster all over the schools walls from end to end and top to bottom. Speeches are made and they are read before an assembly. Students take sides and line up behind their candidates. Then, the hour of decision arrives, who will win. Truly, this is how politicians are born. Although the Student Forum is the most important student government body and tends to overshadow the others, there are two other government organizations. The Student Council deals with matters pertaining with the Lower and Middle Schools. The Interplay Committee exists to better student and teacher relations. Sadly, it has done little this year because students have not brought their problems before it. Toison, Lisa 68 Truett, Wendy 71 95 s o 53 I ft en 96 The many times when we are gathered ...”, and boy do we gather, about 180 days a year-plus overtime! This has really been a busy year for everyone, with a variety of activities. Such things as soccer, basketball, homecoming, drama plays, cheering, money-making projects, Junior-Senior, meetings, practices and many other things kept everybody hustiing. Now you have another year to look forward to. Every busy moment that was spent in those awful green walls” will never be relived again. Those were happy times to remember. Everything you read and saw is part of somebody's life. We hope that you can keep and cherish these memories always. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the kind and ,sympathetic” people who I am indebted to. Much credit goes to the teachers for letting the staff members out of classes, the understanding parents who let their kids stay out at night to work and the staff who worked so long and hard to complete this book. Especially I would like to acknowledge the three officers who stuck by me through thick and thin. Walt took all the great pictures you have seen, Penny kept all our money straight, and David, the assistant editor, did any and everything that was asked of him, graciously. A very special thanks goes to him and good-luck with next year’s edition. We have lived and loved together Through many changing years; We have shared each other’s gladness And wept each other’s tears. And let us hope the future, As the past has been will be: I will share with you my sorrows, And you your joys with me. Copied 1 love you all, Angela Editor
