HIGHLANDER 1968 Darien High School Darien, Georgia We Like It Here Majestic, spiraling churches steeped strongly in tradition, filtering sunlight through myriad stained glass windows ... Pulsating, rhythmic formations of wild ducks winding their southward way and fading into the early morning's fog ... A sense of exhultation of awe when earth's low deseeding sun splashes its paint of vivid lavender, tangerine, soft pink, and delicate blue across the Darien River horizon ... Insistent bells sending scurrying students like fallen leaves before a wind to rooms of knowledge and recitations ... The hushed breathlessness of every spectator strained to catch a final goal for a Darien victory at gametime ... The sibilant whisper of simultaneously turned pages and the discovery of a gem ol philosophy from the wisdom of ages past ... Once to every man and nation, Comes the moment to decide. In the strife of truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side ... Scenes, endless scenes ... score of them - fleetingly noted and recorded on eager, impressionable minds from which a lifetime of memories must be drawn. Of such is our Darien heritage, our everyday life. With a sense of pride and with much devotion, we acknowledge our school and our hometown, our fountainheads of our rejuvenating strength. Whether it be in athletics, literary works, or any other type of competition, we are there, ever working, ever cheering our school on to victory. We arc found on the fighting fronts, in the factories, in the fields, walking the decks of shrimp boats, pouring foundations: working, toiling, sweating - onward ever, backward never! ' •. ' We live, work, and grow with our school and community, and when they progress to- ward the fulfillment of their goals, we feel, (and justly so), a warm glow of happiness - because we are a part of it. In an humble effort to express how we feel about our school and town, how deeply are ingrained our love and our devotion, the 1968 Highlander truly proclaims, WE LIKE IT HERE! JAKE SINGLETON A cordial smile to every Darien High stu- dent, a deep personal interest in those he teaches, and a genuine enthusiasm for extra- curricular activities—these are a few consti- tuents of his personality. He is dedicated to knowledge and de- voted to a search for truth. He often must sacrifice his time and epergy to accomplish his goals. He makes his work a pleasure and imparts a zeal to his classes that causes him and his subject to be popular. We the 1968 Highlander Staff are happy to salute Mr. Jake Singleton. Always A Helping Hand . . . Mr. Ralph Huff, our principal, advisor, and friend, has added an unusual sparkle to our campus. His varied interests, educational knowledge, genuine personality, and un- questionable character are only a few of his innumerable traits. Even with his numerous responsibilities he is always willing to give freely of his time to faculty and students alike. We commend Mr. Huff for his out- standing qualities as a leader and for his ability as a molder of sound citizens. Mr. W. E. Ethington, a dedicated superintendent, has become indispensable to our county school system. His duties are many. His interest enables a broad curriculum to be offered to a great many students in a smooth, efficient manner. This devoted man’s friendly attitude and personality are evident in all that he does. Truly, we can be justified in pro- claiming him the backbone of our school system.” Faculty HISTORY: Mr. Jake Singleton LIBRARIAN: Mrs. Kenneth Gale HOME ECONOMICS: Mrs. Garry Pittman LUNCHROOM: Mrs. Williard Pelham, and Mrs. Raymond Waters MATH: Mr. George Roth and Mr. Claude Winstead ENGLISH: Miss Carolyn Barwick, Mr. Eldred Mann, and Mrs. Jake Singleton BUSINESS: Mrs. Ellis Stephens and Miss Sylvia Mikkola Faculty COACHES: Mr. Kenneth Gale and Mr. Jake Singleton SCIENCE: Mr. Mel Farmer VISITING TEACHER: Mrs. Carl Schmidt and SECRETARY: Mrs. Lloyd Thompson ft GAY AULD CHRIS BARE CLASS OFFICERS President Billy Wilkinson Vice President Thomasine Randall Secretary Alana Pickren Treasurer Inez Rozier DOROTHY BUMBY MARILYN DRURY BETTY EDWARDS STEVE GLENN BOBBY GRIFFIS JANE HOWARD JIMMY HOWARD DAVID JUSTICE BUDDY MARTIN K BRENDA McINTOSH MARY McINTOSH THOMASINE RANDALL INEZ ROZIER -S JIMMY ROZIER VIRGINIA RYALS BARBARA WALKER SHIRLEY WALTER GINNY WATSON BILLY WILKINSON RONNIE WORTHAM Senior Directory AULD, CHARLOTTE GAY: Class Officer 2,3; Glee Club 1,2; FTA 1,4; Basketball Team 2, Manager 1; Spanish Club 3; Cheerleader4;.Homecoming Rep. 4 (1st Runner-up). Future Teachers Of America The Chapter of the Future Teachers of America in the Darien High School is very appropriately named for Lachlan McIntosh, one of the historic founders of this country, and contemporary friend of James Edward Oglethorpe. Primarily, F. T. A. encourages students to consider seriously the advantages of teach- ing, and the influence of the role the teach- er plays in molding the character of the youth of today. F. T. A. members assist the faculty in preparing bulletin boards, in supervising play periods, and classroom work. Beta Club The National Beta Club is a non-profit leadership-service organization for high- school students. Its purpose is to stimulate effort, re- ward achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their educa- tion after high school. The qualifications for membership are worthy character, good mentality, credit- able achievement, and commendable atti- tude. Members must meet certain schol- astic standards set by the head of the school. Future Business Leaders Of America FBLA is an organization open to all students who have taken or are taking a business course. FBLA strives to help students work together better, to promote sportsmanship, and to help develop better businessmen and businesswomen for the future. Future Homemakers Of America The FHA is a national organiza- tion for high-school students who have taken or are taking Home Ec- onomics. It is developed for the purpose of providing experiences that broaden Home Economics ed- ucation. The overall goal is To help individuals improve personal, family, and community living. To the members of the Spanish Club, the barrier between the Americas could never be one of language. The club sponsor tries to instill in her linguists a better un- derstanding of the culture and language of our Latin-American neighbors. At the an- nual Spanish Banquet, students wear the colorful dress of the Spanish-speaking countries and enjoy Spanish food in a gala South American atmosphere.
