FOREWORD “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep.” Psalm 107:23,24 The sea was no stranger to the men of the Scottish Highlands who settled these shores. They were familiar with the sea which surrounded their home- land with lochs and estuaries. The sea and shrimping has been a way of life for the men of Darien and McIntosh County for many generations. The sea is sometimes reluctant to give of her treasures, but the stalwart and sturdy men of this area have survived lean years and sometimes stark tragedy to emerge victorious in the battle for existence. The flotilla of shrimp-boats riding at anchor in the Darien River presents an unforgettable sight to the traveler from other sections. If any one thing can be said to symbolize Darien and McIntosh County, that one thing would be the shrimp-boat as pictured on this page.
