THE HIGHLANDER Presented by The Senior Class of 1965 I DEDICATION No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter in the house of his wis- dom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind. Kahlil Gibran 2 MR. RALPH G. HUFF, Principal Darien High School 3 FOREWORD “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep.” Psalm 107:23,24 The sea was no stranger to the men of the Scottish Highlands who settled these shores. They were familiar with the sea which surrounded their home- land with lochs and estuaries. The sea and shrimping has been a way of life for the men of Darien and McIntosh County for many generations. The sea is sometimes reluctant to give of her treasures, but the stalwart and sturdy men of this area have survived lean years and sometimes stark tragedy to emerge victorious in the battle for existence. The flotilla of shrimp-boats riding at anchor in the Darien River presents an unforgettable sight to the traveler from other sections. If any one thing can be said to symbolize Darien and McIntosh County, that one thing would be the shrimp-boat as pictured on this page. ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT To The Highlander Staff and Student Body: I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you, the Senior Class, on reaching this milestone in your life. We are living in a highly complex and changing age, and educa- tion is more important now than it has ever been in the history of mankind. Let me urge you to take advantage of every opportunity that you may have to continue your education so that you will be better qualified to meet the challenge of life that awaits you upon reach- ing adulthood. Education is the key which unlocks the door to op- portunity. My best wishes are always with each of you. May good health, happiness and success always Sincerely, be yours. PRINCIPAL To the Senior Class of 1965: The past four years have been ones of great pleasure to me in having watched your progress and development. The experi- ences you have had and the lessons you have learned will follow you the rest of your lives. The foundation that you have laid is one on which you can build a happy and a rewarding future. But, be not selfish with that which you have been given by God’s bless- ing. Service to humanity looms as a commanding challenge in your life. Follow the words of Tennyson: Come my friends, ’tis not too late to build a better world”. Best wishes. 6 MR, RUSSELL HUFFMAN English Latin Senior Sponsor r7 MISS BETTY CRAVEN Home Economics Junior Sponsor MRS. ANN BLUESTEIN Business Sophomore Sponsor FACULTY MR. M. E.
