THE 1964 HIGHLANDER DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL Darien, Georgia James Bonds, of the Class of '64, holds the present day diploma. Mrs. Janie McIntosh At- wood, of the Class of '95, holds the first di- ploma presented by this school. It was presented to her. resent and .Past (i) IF ore word Still walk the ghosts from the romantic era of early colonial times in McIntosh county. Still walk they among the gigantic oaks, strewn with waving moss, casting glooms interlaced with spontaneous jewels of brilliant light. Still can be heard the faint vibrations of the victorious, resounding shots that repelled the Spaniards from the tangled woods dotted by palmetto - shots that re- pelled them from the waving sea grasses, pulsating in vibilant whispers with each living breath of salt-filled air. Still can be dimly seen, in full regalia, the feathered cap, the swinging kilt, and the buskmed foot of the Scottish Highlanders. From the mountains of Scotland came one hundred and sixty-three brave and loyal Scottish Highlanders, who preserved for a time their national garb and, in a measure, their speech. Into this new land poured young and vibrant blood from the clans of McIntosh, McDonald. Morrison, Clark, Curhbert, Spalding, Wright, and Baillie. On December 23, 1735, the post was created, land allotted, building com- menced, and the royal flag of Great Britain unfurled. All able-bodied men were enrolled and mustered into the King’s service as The Highland Rangers. The pages of history record the bravery and the necessary part which these early settlers played in “The Battle of the Bloody Marshes and the Revolution of 1775. Coupled with their bravery, too, was a keen insight to justice and equality. In a petition to General Oglethorpe their opinion of slavery is recorded: It is shock- ing to human nature that any race of mankind and their posterity should be sen- tenced to perpetual slavery. This was written in January of 1739. Today, McIntosh county, marsh-encircled gateway to the ocean, again is re- suming its position of leadership. It is rich in natural resources, abundant in wild life and game, and bounteous in sea and marine life. Nowhere is excelled the size or quality of her delicious prawn, flounder, oysters, and shad. Indelibly are inscribed in history the influence and importance of its people. Whatever role it will play in the future of this nation is not a question of conjecture or doubt, for it is assured that such a people so fathered, so steeped in tradition and equalities, can bring only honor and glory to them and their descendants. f 4 A ‘ ' fr-A-ddSsO i V ■ .+ , tf J - Ky .VT- ' • ..
