The Senior Class DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL Darien, Georgia Presents THE 1962 HIGHLANDER DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1962, wish to dedicate this annual to Mr. Kenneth Gale. Mr. Gale has done his best to guide our minds and bodies through the right channels. It has been difficult for him at times, but we will forever be grateful. To The Highlander Staff, Faculty and Student Body We are today in competition with a nation of vast re- sources, a people of seemingly unbounded enthusiasm for self-development, fired with conviction that the future su- premacy belongs to those with the best trained minds, those who will work hard and sacrifice. This is a statement made by Commissioner of Education, Lawrence G. Derthick, soon after he made a visit to Russia. We are fortunate here at Darien High School to have the facilities and faculty to guide the students in a form of education to meet this competition. It is up to you to do the hard work and make the sacri- fices necessary for this accomplishment. It is my hope as we move forward from year to year in our emotional filled, scientific world that more boys and girls will remain in school and take advantage of the opportunities offered them. Let me congratulate the editor and staff on this publica- tion. It shows that many hours have been spent in diligent work. I am sure we will treasure our copy through the years to come. Sincerely yours, W. E. Ethington, C.S.S. To the Senior Class of 1962: May I congratulate the senior class of 1962, both individually and collectively, on the achievement that you have attained during your high school days in the Darien High School. You have worked hard in your academic subjects, in athletics, and all your school activities. Your class has proven to be most cooperative with the faculty, and the total school program. It has been a genuine pleasure to work with each of you. As your plans for the future unfold it is my hope that you will attain maximum success in your chosen held of work. To each and all, the future is yours. You have the oppor- tunity to fulfill the traditions of the Darien High School and to make your Alma Mater second to none. In so doing, you will, in turn develop to the fullest, the capacities that each of you possesses. My best wishes are always with each of you, with the fac- ulty, with the school and with the continued success of each and all. Very sincerely. We, the Senior Class of Darien High School, of the city of Darien, County of McIntosh, and State of Georgia, being of sound body and weak mind, do hereby leave this our last will and testament. I, Kelly Andrews, will my ability to learn chemistry to Stanley Town- send. I, Virginia Barwick, will my blonde hair and blue eyes to Ziada Ar- guedas, since she is so fair. I, Sherry Chambers, will my sparkling eyes and eye make-up to Vir- ginia McQuaig since I am positive she'll make good use of them. I, Ronnie Dixon, will my fabulous build and good looks to my sister, she needs it so terribly. I, Hunter Forsyth, will my good looks to Darien High School since it is in such bad need of it. We, Laura Freeman and Emily Gardner, leave our ability to cut up and cheat in class to any Junior who thinks he is capable of keeping up on high standards. I, Gale Ginn, will my ability to play basketball to Jimmy Thompson. I, Wayne Gore, will my interest in weight-lifting to Allen Ryals since he really doesn't need it. I, Marie Kindred, will my excessive height to Shirley Nelson, since she really needs it. I. Martha Ann O'Quinn, will my place in the Senior Class to John Harrison in hopes he will fill it. I, Harvey Richardson, will my ability to do the twist to Howard Kick- lighter. I, Lila Faye Rowe, will my ability to foul out to Lottie Ann Fisher who never fouls. I, Willard Rozier, will my sideburns to Jerry Yo I, Rodney Sawyer, will my name Possum” to all future basketball stars. 1, John Sikes, do hereby will my excessive mental capabilities to Roger Lane. I, Donald Stephens, will my chemistry book to Ernest Poppell, hoping he will do as well as me. I, Neil Strickland, will all my popularity with the girls to Lewis Turner since I'm growing tired of being chased. I, Lynn Townsend, will my ambitious walk to Buddy Davis. I, Ethel Woodward, will my kilt to Joe Kennedy in hopes he will even- tually become a cheerleader. I. Orris Young, will my height to Allen Ryals. I, Stevie Poppell will my ability to play hookey to Lewis Turner with- out being caught. I. George Horton, will my ability to keep calm in times of crisis to David Earl Lane. CLASS PROPHECY I walked into the lobby of the Tropicana Hotel in Miami, where our Oarien High Senior Class of '62 is holding its first reunion. It has been ten years since I've seen all my old friends and I'm thrilled, and excited to see what professions they have chosen. Hunter Forsyth was acting as official host and began telling me about all the old gang. Laura Freeman, the celebrated home economist was writing features for the New York Times. Oh, my goodness! Could that be the famous tennis pro Ronnie Dixon standing by the window? Yes, it is and he’s walking over to greet a stunning girl in a black dress. Oh. it's Ethel Woodward. It has been a long time since I’ve talked with her. She's now a very reknowned psychiatrist. The lovely little blonde, now shaking my hand is Virginia Barwick. How well I remember her secret dream of becoming an interior decorator. Her dream came true and she is now work- ing in Atlanta, Georgia. We all began cheering when the handsome young senator from Georgia, John Sikes, came in. He was followed by his secretary, Lila Faye Rowe, who told me she's just crazy about her work. Lynn Townsend, jet pilot and daredevil who defies death, was seated in one of the big lounge chairs. He began telling me about this great movie he had seen last night, featuring Marie Kindred as the box office favorite and Orris Young, as the producer. Willard Rozier was talking animatedly to Donald Stevens, the popular mimic and satirist. Willard, an intense young man with great talent, is now in the field of chemistry. Someone turned the T.V. on and Emily Gardner, the lovely cover girl was modeling a Parisienne gown. Wild sounds issued from the set a mo- ment later and I was told they were produced by the master of sound effects. Gale Ginn. He has made millions. The door opened and in walked that wealthy young tycoon of G.E., Neil Strickland. Harvey Richardson, the young Mr. District Attorney of Jacksonville was trying to tell Rodney Sawyer about his fishing trip. Rodney now owns a whole fleet of fishing vessels. George Horton, the colossal Conductor of the R.B.C. Orchestra, now features Kelly Andrews blowing a mean saxaphone. Wayne Gore, the first man to break Paul Anderson’s record for weight-lifting came over and talked to me. I was amazed at his muscular physique. Hunter Forsyth was surrounded by a gang of reporters who were still ask- ing numerous questions about his big project. He landed a month on Mars; his name will go down in history. Martha Ann O’Quinn is now a chic hair stylist and make-up artist. Stevie Poppell won first place in the Southern 500 about a month ago and is still receiving fan mail. Well, I simply must get back to my job with Delta Airlines. See you all in ten years. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude ot our advisor, Mr. McQuaig; our principal, Mr. Huff; our school secretary, Mrs. Hawthorne; and the faculty. Without their patience, co-operation and advice this annual could not have been possible.
