€ THE I960 HIGHLANDER DARIEN HIGH DARIEN, GEORGIA hUMjrflJl Cditon'z YYlea aqe We, the annual staff are proud to present another annual to the students of Darien High. We have done our very best to capture, through photography, the good spirit that exist in our school. On the division pages are photographs of scenes in and around Darien. Someday we can look back to the 1960 Highlander and see Darien as it was twenty years ago. The time marred memories of our school days can be clarified by just turning through these pages. The sentimental value of this book will inevitably increase with the passage of time. There are many people who have directly or indirectly made this annual possible. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Ethington, who has served as our advisor, to Mr. Pinkerton, Mrs. Hawthorne and the faculty for their patience and fine co-operation, and to Mr. Frank Williams Jr. for his time and photographic equipment which he donated to the Senior Class, free of charge. We would also like to thank the many businessmen who have purchased advertising space in this annual, thus furnishing the necessary money. I firmly believe that this annual is well worth the time and money that we have spent on it. EDITOR Wynn Pelham WE, the annual staff, dedicate this annual to Mr. W. E. Ethington, in view of the invaluable aid and guidance that he has so often extended during our high school years. 3 MRS. ROBERT YOUNG Superintendent MR. CECIL Q. PINKERTON Principal MR. W. E. ETHINGTON Assistant Principal Boys' Coach 12th Homeroom Pnincipal'4 YYleaaaqe To the Highlander Staff, Faculty and Student Body: It is with pride that we take a look at Darien High School. The school is a reminder of the faith that the early settlers of McIntosh County had in education. It has helped prepare leaders in the progress of our county, state, and country. You are now entering the sixties with its scientific advancement, changing economy, and growing population. This is the space age which presents a magnitude of problems for you to aid in solving. We hope that you are prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. We are fortunate in having adequate standard classrooms with an auditorium, gymnasium, and lunchroom. Improvements have been made on our school grounds and new equipment has been added this year along with an expanded audio-visual program. Facilities in the science laboratory and business education have been improved. Our school attendance has been excel- lent. This has resulted in additions to our faculty. Let me congratulate the editor and staff on this publication. It is the evidence of teamwork, school spirit, and determination. I am sure that each student will treasure his copy through the years to come. Sincerely yours, (3sl F $ (fxZx. Mr. Cecil Q. Pinkerton ministra tion MR. R. P. MARSH Science MR. D. R. Some of us have completed our high school careers at this school. We were all thrilled our first year at school. We started out with thirty-seven pupils. Most us were in Mrs. Ethington's room but seven were in Mrs. McQuaig's room with the first and cond grades combined. The next year we had eight pupils to drop out and thirteen to come in. The ones that entered at year that are in the present class are; Connie Townsend and Sherri Waters. Our teacher this ar was Mrs. McQuaig. When we entered the third grade we found out that the Darien and Townsend school had msolidated. We had twenty-two new pupils this year. The ones that joined us that year are nald Chambers, Murray Ryals, and Betty Nell Young. Jack Johnston and Randall Kick- jhter also joined us this year. The class was so large that we had to have two teachers. They re Mrs. Williamson and Miss Murphy. Our fourth grade teachers were Miss Anderson and Mrs. Middleton. We had twelve new ipils this year but all of them have dropped out since then. In the fifth grade we had eleven pupils to drop out and twelve new ones. All of the new pupils ive dropped out. Our teachers for4hat year were Mrs. Cone and Mrs. Lewis. Our sixth grade teachers were Mrs. Moreland and Mrs. Klenk. We had ten new pupils this iar but all of them have dropped out. We had eleven to drop out this year. When we reached the seventh grade we thought we were something! Just because we were junior high, we thought we were as big as anyone else. Our teachers for that year were Miss eal and Mrs. Whorton. We had eight new members but all of them have dropped out except ynn and Pauline Pelham. When we were in the eighth grade our class was really separated. This was the first year at the boys and girls were separated. Miss Smith was the girls homeroom teacher and Mr. allard was the boys. We had eleven pupils to join us that year but the only one that is in the aduating class is Joe Townsend. We had twelve to drop out too. By the time we were graduating from Junior High School we had become young ladies and intlemen. We were thrilled very much when we received our diplomas. We entered our freshman year with high hopes and a brilliant outlook for the future. Our imeroom teachers that year were Mrs. Stebbins and Miss Neal. Out of ten new pupils the only ie that is left is Andy Greene. We had twenty to drop out that year. Our sophomore year was much the same as the Freshman only we had become more accus- tomed to the way things were carried out. Our teachers for that year were Mrs. Cowart and Mr. Crowe. We had seventeen new pupils and the ones in the graduating class are: Charlotte Tillman, Dennis Jenkins, Larry Poppell, and Billy Freeman. We had seventeen to drop out that year but three of them joined us again our Senior year. We were very happy when we came to school as juniors. The highlights of this year were ordering our class rings and preparing a banquet which we gave in honor of the senior class. Mr. Grinstead was our sponsor for that year. We had two new pupils but the only one in the senior class is Allison Jacobs. We had three to drop out this year. We have twenty-nine members in the Senior Class under the guidance of Mr. W. E. Ething- ton as sponsor. The senior year is always a busy one. The most important activities occupying the Senior's time are planning the annual and making money for our Senior Trip. We have two new members this year and they are Mary Dell Pretorious and Joan Stevens. In 1948, the year that we entered school for the first time, there were thirty-seven, but there are only eleven in our present senior class that started out together. They are: David Bluestein, William Ethington, Donnie McQuaig, Freddy Todd, Margie Britt, Mary Lou Jackson, Barbara Shell, Louise Thomas, Patsy Thompson, Walton Rowe and Delaine Truett. We are grateful to our parents and teachers who have made it possible for us to complete our high school training. JustWitt Delta merit oj? the Senior C iaAA ojV I960 To whom it may concern: We, the graduating class of 1960 of Darien High School, do hereby legally and lawfully, in the eyes of the assigned witnesses bequeath here-in-after mentioned: Article 1 . To our most beloved and appreciated faculty, we bequeath our gratitude for all the knowledge gained through your patience and planning. Article 2. I, William Ethington will my overbearing confidence to Jimmy Andrews. I, Billy Freeman will my place on the smoking bench to Lynn Townesend. I, Andy Greene will my driving luck to Hunter Forsyth. He nee'ds it more than I do. I, Mary Lou Jackson will my ability to cut classes to Sandra Williamson since she is such a HARD worker. I, Allison Jacobs will my theme writing ability to Roland Rozier. I, Dennis Jenkins will my never failing promptness to Tony Pelham. I, Jack Johnston will my tremendous height to John Dennison. I, Randell Kicklighter will my dancing skill to Sam Hagan. I, Donnie McQuaig will my excessive weight to David McQuaig. I, Pauline Pelham will my desk in the front of Mr. Ethington's class to Billy Collins in hopes that he can endure it. I, Wynn Pelham will my adeptness in Mechanical Drawing to David Hornsby if he is fool enough to take it. I, Larry Poppell will my tendency to make a career of high school to Louis Turner. I, Mary Dell Preetorious will my adherence to my studies to Jo Ann Butler. I, Walton Rowe will my hopped up car to Gale Ginn. I, Murray Ryals will my deep understanding of physics to Ronnie Dixon. I, Barbara Shell will my solemn attitude to Eugenia Bacon. I, Joan Stephen will my brains (whats left of them) to Gene Cowart since he has none of his own. I, Louise Thomas will my U. S. History book to Brenda Freeman since she will probably flunk it too. I, Patsy Thompson will my ability to yell at ball games to Wanda Geiger. I, Charlotte Tillman will my red socks to Lottie Ann Fisher. I, Freddy Todd will my honesty to Gerald Sawyer. I, Joe Townesend will the remainder of my Bottles to Rodney Sawyer since he is such a heavy drinker. I, Connie Townsend will my bookkeeping ability to Gail Brannen. I, Delaine Truett will my ability to make a good impression on the referees to Virginia McQuaig. I, Sherry Waters will my temper to Harriet Auld since I have already used my share of it. I, Betty Nell Young will my ability to get along with teachers to Sandy Dennison. 33 f- ropliecy Today is May 26, 1960. I sit before a crystal ball in which one is supposed to look ten years into the future. Silently I gaze into it. Everything is cloudy, but wait, that is only the dust from the car of the famous race driver Andy Greene which was designed by the great car designer Dick Rathbun. The dust clears and I see some shiny stars, but as I look closer I find this to be only the shoulder of the five star General Randall Kick- lighter. Now everything turns black, but lets look again; that is only the oil from the oil wells of the husband of Mary Lou Jackson who teaches for a hobby. Next I am looking upon the ocean. I see a fleet of shrimp boats owned by Donny McQuaig and in the distance I see a huge battleship with Admiral Jack Johnston at the wheel. Overhead flies a Golden Wings Airline plane owned by Sherri Waters with Delaine Truett as one of the stewardess aboard. In the distance I hear music. Could it be Vice President Billy Freeman campaigning for a second term? No, its the famous rock roll singer Joe Townsend. Suddenly there is a loud explosion. It could be that the famous test pilot, Murray Ryals has crashed or that an explosion has occurred in the factory belonging to Allison Jacobs; but its not; its another one of the experiments of Prof. David Bluestein. A doctor is being rushed on the scene. Well bless my soul if it isn't Dr. Wynn Pelham. David will be looked after in the hospital by a nurse named Pauline Pelham. From the distance comes the click of typewriters. Look, its the office of Margie Britt, the owner of an exclusive millinery shop in Paris. She has two fine secretaries, Patsy Thompson and Charlotte Tillman. Suddenly I hear voices that might be the cowboys on Larry Poppell's ranch but as they grow louder, I find that its a faculty meeting. Among the teachers is Connie Townsend. Betty Nell Young, the teenage guidance counsellor from Washington is making a speech. Next there is a loud commotion that could be the jet mechanic Freddy Todd but instead its General William Ethington giving orders to his men. Now the picture is improving. I see Miss America of 1960, Louise Thomas and the well known model Barbara Shell. Next I catch a glimpse of the famous movie star Joan Stephens as she goes off stage. Everything is peaceful as I see Mary Dell Preetorious, a successful house- wife, preparing dinner for her husband. Now I hear loud cheering. Could it be for the professional baseball player Walton Rowe? No, the cheers are for the University of Georgia basketball team, coached by Ronald Chambers. They are playing a charity game for the cancer drive headed by the wealthy Dennis Jenkins. Suddenly there is a loud ringing. The startling fact dawns upon me that I have been daydreaming in class. But who knows what the future may hold or what great man or woman may someday look back to the good ole days in the Darien Senior Class of 1960. 35 Mrs. Pelham, Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Todd, Mrs. Kicklighter, Mrs. Jackson.
