Pn,a xUecu, You all know me. I'm Barbara Britt, the old maid. Reminisce with me as I take you on a tour to renew old acquaintance. It all started one day when I happened to bump into an old school pal of mine, Ernestine Deal, in Atlanta,Georgia. It had been ten years since I'd seen Ernestine. She’s like me, still a big game (man) hunter. We got to talking, like old friends do, and I asked her if she knew where any of the old class was hiding out. Well, sir, she must have read every newspaper since 1954 be- cause she started rattling off like an atomic machine gun. She said she had just been to the den- tist where Juanita Martin was still working as an assistant to one of the best dentist in the state. Jesse Varnedoe, on the other hand, had finally become a public accountant and was doing very well for himself in Honolulu. Bernice Ferrell and Boyd Gault, now married with two children, reside near their uranium mine in Australia. Edgar Davis was still cleaning test tubes for the renowned Professor Larry Padgett at Oxford. Can you imagine? Carolyn Gore had become Darien's first lady lawyer and Mary Nell Pearson was her secretary. Betty Jean Cauley was secretary to the school principal. We decided to have lunch and finish talking about old limes. Just as we were seated in the restaurant, Harold Gault appeared on a special television news bulletin to acknowledge his election and express his humble gratitude as the newly elected President of the United States. Well, sir. 1 nearly fell out of my chair. He had always talked about it, but I never thought he could make it. We finished lunch and decided to go to a professional basketball game which was being held that afternoon. We arrived at the gym just before the game started, so we had a good chance to look the players over. There on the court was Joe Fisher, All-American, and Paul Strickland, the old high school basketball ace, was his coach. I went down to talk to Paul awhile. Ernestine was talking to one of the tundsome athletes. Paul said he heard that Shirley Ann Bryan was coaching basketball in Brunswick and doing a topnotch job. Ernestine joined us and we began talking about Jake Petty. What was he doing now? Paul said he heard Jake was captain of the jet-propelled Merchant Marine ship Honduras, which is in South American waters. e finally left the gym and I said good-bye to Ernestine as I had to catch a jet back to New York City. 1 was just sitting down with the newspaper when I happened to overhear one man talking to another in the seat behind me. I recognized the voice, so I turned around to see who it was. It was Earl Pitts, the traveling salesman, and his customer was Talmadge Deverger. Earl was really going to town trying to sell Talmadge, who was a big business tycoon, some one hundred carloads of automatically propelled and super chlorophylled tooth brushes. I talked with them for awhile and found out that old Shoeshine Rozier had a permanent job with the Fort King George Association telling his famous Shoeshine Tales to the tourists. Ed B’ackburn and Pete Smith had opened an animal hospital in Darien and were doing an excellent business with all of Iris Jean Robert's (the famous opera singer) French poodles. Mary Lou Townsend was married and very happy. Gordon Shuman, now a flying saucer manufacturer, was planning regular flights to the moon. We had to drop oar discussion because the jet landed briefly at Washington, D.C. and Earl Pitts left to see President Gault about a special contract on his super duper toothbrushes. As I changed jets in Washington, I walked along the platform and, to my utter amazement, there was Charles Ferrell. He told me that he was in the fruit and lumber business--eating apples and whittling, that is. He mentioned that James Townsend was racing at the Annapolis Speedway this year in cars that broke the sound barrier. I said a quick good-bye and boarded my jet. About the time I was seated and became interested in a magazine story, a stampede of teenagers rushed past me to the observation compartment; 1 presume, to see the Philadelphia sky- line. Following behind them was a small woman who in a very quiet voice told the students to be- have themselves. This little woman turned out to be Pat Thompson, their teacher. Pat and I start- ed talking and she said that Gene Bacon wasnow head of the Darien Forestry Department. Upon land- ing in New York, I had dinner to the music of Johnnie Speer and her Rebel Band. As I retired that night, it was a little hard to realize that it was now 1961 and so much had happened in the lives of the 29 Darien High graduates of 1954. Jla.it 'Will and JeAtam-ent j Jlte.
