X From the moment We first entered D.H.S., until the time when We shall receive our diplomas, our hands have been the instruments which transmuted into deeds the ideas devised by our expanding minds. There- fore, it seems fitting that we should depict hands performing various functions in order to represent the idea behind the action. In the above photograph, we have attempted not only to introduce our theme, but to portray the oneness of the school and the unity of the Class of 1954. After a gruelling week of practice, the Blue Wave played a hard-hitting first half, passing and running for two touchdowns. Scoreless, the upstate machine took over in the latter part of the game, battering down a well informed but exhausted Darien de- fense. They marched quickly to two successive scores, tak- ing advantage of the situation. Their victory, but a point away, vanished from sight as the Mahermen's forward wall held them from a fatal extra point. The outstanding feature of the afternoon was the Darien line, for its drive and defensive rushing. DARIEN 26 BULLARD HAVENS O Bullard Havens of Bridgeport experienced its first year of football this year, but they were no match for a twice victorious Blue Wave. Going scoreless for their fourth straight game, the Bridgeport team attempted to outlast their opponents and thus win with conditioning. This was to be accomplished through the use of twelve minute quarter periods. But so far, no Darien team has been defeated on account of conditioning or lack thereof. For having made such a decision, Bullard Havens was swamped by an engulf- ing Blue Wave. Kick or receive, Rich? Melba br CONSTANT PRACTICE PAY DARIEN 14 KILLINGLY Z0 The Blue Wave of Darien High School faced upstaters from Killingly High for the opening contest of 1953. The game started rather slowly as Darien's untried backfreld and irregular line faced a strong Danielson team, whc showed the same amazing speed of their previous year's eleven. Darien played an ineffectual first half, but, inspired by their coaches' encouragement, they sprang to life in the latter part of the game. The Maroon offense was stopped cold. Behind spirited blocking, Darien gained admirably only to have their time run out. The Mahermen had out- played their opponents, but had failed to surmount their score. The game, our second consecutive defeat at the hands of Killingly, nevertheless proved the importance of deter- mination and drive. DARIEN 26 YONKERS 15 Hardly over the sting of their opening defeat, the Mahermen charged through the defenses of an outclassed Yonkers ball club. The Blue and Orange, sporting a better backlield than last year's team, put up a game battle. Ground changed ownership quickly as both teams scored relatively early. Backfield play, asserting itself behind an efficient line set Darien enough in the lead for the game to end in a defensive stalemate. Darien's second and third strings saw their first action toward the end of the contest. lt is interest- ing to note that both this year and last, the Blue Wave carried out their revenge for defeat upon a surprised Westchester squad. se. fe ' u D all aroun I t D '- 46 7 -3, Whaddya mean, penalty? RUSS Y 00155 Can't stop that Scullf OFF IN VICTORIOUS SEASON DARIEN 23 ST. MARY'S 19 In preparation for the rough and ready Sr. Mary's High School of West Haven, the Mahermen drilled heavily on both pass and single wing defense. This helped consider- ably in coping with the Friars , as Darien swept to a touch- down in the beginning of each half. The Blue Wave held so well that their opponents were forced to pass. Blocking broke up the St. Mary line and interceptions halted advances gained by passing. After an eighty-five yard march, Darien placed its finishing touches on the scoring column. St. Mary's last minute spurt resulting in a touchdown was all in vain, for the West Haven team went down to give Darien its fourth triumph of the year. DARIIEN 15 FAlRFlFl.D I3 A hectic fourth quarter and a freak pass transformed what might have been a Darien victory into a hopeless deada lock with Roger l.udlowe of Fairfield. Faced with a favored Fairfield squad and urged on by the stands, Darien held the Black and Gold scoreless in the first half. With Darien leading until the last few minutes. Fairfield was placed in scoring position by an interference ruling. With literally seconds left, a desperation pass by the Tiger found its mark in a touchdown. The games end and a rock-wall defense saved Darien from a loss. ln general, the contest was thril- ling and hardafought. The climax, however, will remain a moot point for some time to come. . .I ff t 'UTY NHS! fflf Vlfmfb'-A Ray: Coming throughfu H . Both teams were to clash with identical season records of five wins, one loss, and one tie. This made it the most interesting and well-attended game of the year. The Battle of the Blue Bunting, won for three straight years by Westport, seemed from the start in Darien's favor. A thoroughly conditioned and hardened Darien club was cool and confident. Often they stopped the Wreckers at the line. The Blue Wave's overwhelming spirit carried them through to win the class B county championship. It was a hearten- ing and polished end to a memorable season. 1,1 ,Nt X 0515. .ago 1 as Wi L Aqc Q0 We Qi 47 fa ,, sg! fx, qi -. .-2 f ' A as A v 4- Q C - A 3. KA BLUE WAVE SWEEPS COUNTY B OPPOSITION The Blue Wave, with the expert assistance of Coach MacAusland, completed an excellent season, winning eleven out of fifteen games. No opponent was able to defeat D.H.S. more than once, the Blue revenging early losses to Stamford, Shelton, and West- port. The sweetest moments of the season were pro- vided by double wins over our arch rival, New Canaan. The first of these victories gained us the County B lead and the second insured our B title. The team then traveled to the C.l.A.C. Tournament with high hopes, only to tighten up and drop a 69-52 decision to Plainville. The squads key men were: Captain Pete Scullg driving Dick Lindstromg jeff Frazier, the team's play- makerg steady Fred Alicandrog big Bill Flynng Long jack Foster and joe Kells. This year's squad was composed mostly of young talent under the guidance of a few veterans. Captain jack Herman set a fine example by playing brilliantly on both offense and defense. This year marked the fiftieth anniversary for the National Thespian Society. To celebrate this event, our Thespian troupe, led by president Hill Johnston, took an autumn trip to New York where they joined with groups from other schools to enjoy a gala dinner and a Broadway play. The other fall activity for Thespians was centered around the One-Act Play Contest. The task of or- ganizing and coaching the Plays again fell to the Thespians, with Stephanie Shellhase and Hill Johns- ton coaching the winning Sophomore presentation. After helping with the Senior play, the Thespians picked candidates for the honor of becoming mem- bers of the troupe. Following a hectic initiation week, topped off by riotous skits, the candidates took their oaths and joined the coveted Thespian ranks. Spring brought the long-awaited Thespian Play. This year the Thespians did a fine job in presenting The Royal Family which was well received by a full house. I LIBRARY SERVICE CLUB ' ,vw E 'ZTBEQJ Seated: J. Carriera, -I. Kermes, C. A GLANCE AT THE BUSINESS WORLD The members of the senior class were fortunate in having an economics seminar this year. The project, originated by Mr. Marland, was designed for the purpose of acquainting high school students with the fundamental principles of our econo- my. The course consisted of a series of lectures given by prom- inent businessmen. The speakers presented their views on practical economy and related their experiences in the financial world. The whole program is based on a note of informality. Every other Friday the senior class was to be found in the cafeteria, sprawled comfortably CPD upon the orchestra risers. After the lecture, the class divided into small groups, discussed the presentation over cokes, and jotted down any questions which they wished to ask the lecturer. The economics experiment has proved to be quite inter- esting and valuableg its very success should insure its repe- tition.
