'JN 15 5 Y 1? mm Az 5 It was really a good feeling to wilk through the now familiar doors of Darien High on Sep tember 7th 1918 for we were now actually juniors and not the poor bewildered Sophomores to be scoffed at as we had been the year before. Indeed we don't feel that our class is to be scoffed at in any way for the consensus of our class is that the Class of '50 is a pretty up-and- coming class. We started the year off by electing as our very capable class ofhcers: Dick Smith President' Lois Van Hoeven Secretary' and Sally Mazzeo, Treasurer. This was followed by our walking off with the One Act Play award for the second consecu me year CWe hope to make it three next year J Perhaps our greatest achievement this year was our fabulous unior Prom with its original Grecian decorations which we are sure was considered a success by all who attended. A distinguishing feature of the unior Class is its four sets of twins' the Cushmarfs Wrights Arcanos and Belchers a group which were sure won't be equaled for many a year to come. All in all we feel that our class is a very prom- ising one and that next year we will be perfectly capable of taking the place of the Seniors. D. Smith Prefident B. Some of our talent was also disphzyed in the Kzudeville Show this year, ln summing up, we feel that our Class of '51 really has something to olfer Darien High, and that we will do a good joh in hlling the places of the upper classmen in the next two years. llc 77611.11 klen . The team then travelled to Waterbury where in the hardest fought game of the year they tied Wilby 7-7. The Maher- men showed their championship form as they shut out all their remaining foes. Westport Derby and Branford were defeated in turn and the season came to an end triumphantly with a record breaking 45-0 victory over our traditional Armistice Day rival New Canaan. One of the main reasons for the team s success was the fact that every player kept himself in top notch shape all of the time Every boy turned out for the rugged pre season conditioning sessions during August s sweltering heat wave and faithfully attended the long practices every afternoon after school The players all worked together as a unit and it was the combined efforts of everyone not of just a few stars that made such a fine season possible OUR RECORD Darren Opponent Strafford .............................. No one is urged to join this group, membership is all purely voluntary. Re- hearsals, held once a week throughout the year, are aimed toward their one great per- formance in the Spring Concert. The Glee Club's growing popularity was shown again this year by the enthusiastic applause it received at this concert. gas' ga mf The Girls' Glee Club is always a hit on any program. Accompanied by Mary Chudy at the piano, these girls practice twice a week with the object of all their efforts, our Spring Concert. This year, the Girls' Glee Club was even more successful at the concert with their singing of several familiar songs. After this the orchestra had no chance to sit back and relax, for the Senior Play was soon upon them. Here again they made a fine showing. No sooner was this over than rehearsals got underway for the Christmas Concert in December. Diligently they worked in prep- aration for this. Their performance of some stirring traditional Christmas music was a fitting introduction for the Cantata presented by the choir. After Christmas vacation, music was prepared for the Thespian Play. Next the members of the orchestra participated in the State Festival at Storrs. Preparation for this entailed hard work on the part of the members of the orchestra as well as Mr. Thompson. This showed up in the excellent rating which they received. With- out respite, they launched into the music for the Spring Concert. This was the climax of the orchestras successful year at which time they gave a meticulous performance which enlisted the skill and teamwork of every member. The final appearance of the orchestra was at the graduation ceremonies where they gave their usual hne performance. For the recessional the orchestra was composed of underclassmen, sending the Seniors on their way in grand style. any N . Ffh First Row, Left to Right: l. Peterson, H. Bronner, C. A Pool, J. The Choir's hrsr appearance was for the United Nations Assembly, when it sang The United Nations on the March. Following tradition, the Choir presented a Christ- mas Cantata, The Petit Noel, which certainly con- firmed its exceptional reputation. Dressed in black robes, the members of the Choir, made an impressive procession to the stage, where the Cantata was sung. The annual Spring Concert, presented by the entire music department, was a climax to another successful year for the A Cappella Choir. Zan! Under the supervision of Mr. Thompson, this year's band proved itself to be one of the finest in the school's history. On the gridiron, in its traditional blue and white uniforms, the band gave the spectators a treat as they marched through their many interesting forma- tions. Both at home and away this colorful organiza- tion led by its level headed drum majorette, Barbara Ballin, impressed everyone who saw them perform. But the band's activities were not limited to just marching and playing for football games. They participated in the pep rally the day before the New Canaan game and took part in the ceremonies at the laying of the corner- stone of the New Royle School. After the last game, music of a much different nature was brought out. The band was transformed from a marching band to a strikingly well balanced symphonic one.
