dedication s Mrs. Estelle Lane Shade A 5 • - X In sincere appreciation and gratitude for thirty years of loyal service to the alummi and students of Darden High School and to the people of the community, we, the faculty and students of Darden High School, dedicate . this first edition of The Trojan to Firs, Estelle Lane Shade, Her years of service testify to the untiring de- votion, energetic work and benevolent spirit she has exemplified to the many students who have passed through these halls. May her spirit of helpfulness, ideals of culture, and standards of intelligence serve as a torch to light the pa%hs and guide the hearts of all she has taught. 0 ‘«rj r f' =. i • v Realising that even civilisation itself'has been built only upon trial and error, we are conscious that this, our r£irst attempt to publish a school annual, con- tains many mistakes that experience alone would avoid. We wls i to commend the staff of THE TROJAN for its very . , % fine 'beginning.. We%hope that piature staffs will get an inspiration to carry on 'in iriur attempt to preserve in v « documentary form the experiences we have while students of Darden High School. aSf V v x lira. K'¥ X' CLASS HISTORY s In the midst of World War II, the present senior class entered high school as freshmen. We were divided into two sections under the supervision of Miss C. M. Washington and Mr. C. W. Hines with Doris Smith and Mary Owens as president of the respective divisions. The most important event of the year was the first Annual Dramatic Tourna- ment in which Miss Washington's class won first place, Doris Simms, star of the cast, won the honor of outstanding actress in the tournament The fall of 1945 found the successful freshmen entering the sopho- more class under the supervision of Miss J. R. Taylor (now Mrs. J. T. Thompson) and Mrs. S. D Foster. James Nicholson and Blanche Cooper were presidents of the respective divisions. That year the members of our class were outstanding in various fields. Daaaerine Williams, Hilda Winstead, Olivia Weaver, Beatrice McNeil and Helen Woodard made the var- sity basketball team; Wade Lassiter won the band prize for his outstand- ing achievement; Mary Frances Diggs took the honors for biology. Returning War Veterans increased our class for the Junior year, during which time Mrs. R. L, Williams was sponsor and Douglas Parks, president. The real joy of being a junior came in preparing for and attending the Junior-Senior Prom. Keeping up its versatility, the clas had representatives in outstanding activities; the band included James Nicholson, Doris Smith, James George, Willie Jones, James Spivey, ’Wade Lassiter, Charles Hines, Jesse Henderson, and Mary Frances Diggs, with Helen Woodard as leading majorette. Doris Smith excelled in American History. Doris Simms, Charles Plater and Richard Barnes had leading role in the play, Lithuania, that represented the school in the State tournament at Raleigh, N. C This, our senior year, has been the best of all. Our adviser is Mrs. M. II Miller and our president, Richard Barnes. Mary Frances Diggs was chosen one of the outstanding senior for the year because of having won the following honors: a Saving Bond in the County 2ssay Contest on Safety, a medal in the Quiz Kids of America Contest and participation in the local Pepsi-Cola Scholarship Contest, through which she became eligible for the State finals. James George and Richard Barnes represen ed our school in the Eastern Carolina Omega Fraternity Musical Talent Hunt in which the latter received honorable mention. Richard Barnes was also a prize winner in the Quiz Kids contest. The senior girls won the trophy in the first Annual Intramural Basketball Tournament, Now we leave Darden High School with fond and happy memories know- ing that: WS BUILD THE LADDER BY WHICH WE CLIMB. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT With our hearts full of sorrow, we, the seniors of the 1948 grad- ling class of the Charles H. Darden High School, regretfully admit at the time has come for us to bid our farewill to the alma mater __e so dearly We shall never forget the things that were taught s during the happiest four years of our lives. Before departing, we to leave with you one remembrance — our Last « ill And Testament mt-' Jf To our teachers we wish to leave our everlasting gratitude for bo- ig such good advisers and bringing us through thick and thin; and to Barnes, our principal, for being the grandest loader for which we d hope. To our fine school we leave our memories and pray that not be forgotten too soon. Doris Barnes leaves her ability to act to Beatrice Thompson, who. the future, wishes to be an actress.
