SECOND ROW: JoAnn Kennard, secretary, .lay Hill, treasurer, Ginny Hin- son, news reporter. eniot efazu -ffiitoty The day of September 2, I952, was a day full of anxiety and tension for twenty- one wary freshmen. I, personally, can say it was a day long awaited. We were herded into a room which quickly became known as home room , where noses were immediately counted and cards passed around to write your name on. And I soon learned the names of my classmates-to-be for the next four years. They were: Betty Looney, Beverly Nihizer, Earl Sollars, Lucille Wickline, Carol Picklesimer, JoAnn Woods, Barbara Spangler, Eddie Rolfe, Jerry Harper, Larry Mc- Pherson, Norman Puckett, Albert Stewart, Rosalie Egnor, Bobby Caudill, Sally Hicks, Gene Drummond, Charles Weese. Wayne Williams, Barbara Kennard, Jay I7 C LASS HISTORY cont. Hill, and Ginny Hinson. Our class officers turned out to be: .lay Hill, president, Norman Puckett, vice- president, Ginny Hinson, secretary, Barbara Kennard, treasurer, Rosalie Egnor, song leader, and Beverly Nihizer, news reporter. We lost Albert Stewart mid-way thru the year and LaVonne Webb came in to re- place him. Then Eddie Rolfe gave up the struggle, leaving an even twenty. For an activity, we had a bake sale at Troutman's Grocery in Harrisburg for a small profit. Somehow bake sales never seemed to work out for us. Our initiation was mild but the skating party and wiener roast at Gold Cliff was real cool. ln the sports column, we really rated high for Green Freshmen . We had three of our boys playing varsity ball. They were: Jay Hill, Earl Sollars, and Bobby Caudill. On the queen's court, Lucille Wickline was our worthy representative. Also we had one girl, Ginny Hinson, lucky enough to be elected as a cheerleader from our class. Mr. Arnett, being our class advisor, held up very nicely thru the yearl Having attained the title of sophomores, we came back to school on September 6, l953, ready for anything. At the beginning of the year, we picked up two new pupils, namely Roger Miller and Barbara Runkle, only to lose them again. Roger withdrew via working permit while Barbara considered marriage an easier life. Again Jay Hill, Earl Sollars, and Bobby Caudill were good enough to make the varsity. Lt: and coming on the reserve team from our class were Norman Puckett, David Strawser, and Wayne Williams. The managers of the basketball team, Gene Drummond and Larry McPherson, were also from our class. Barbara Kennard was an addition to the cheering squad, also Ginny Hinson from last year. Our class officers for the year were: Norman Puckett, president, Gene Drum- mond, vice-president, Ginny Hinson, secretary, Betty looney, treasurer, and Bar- bara Kennard, news reporter. Ginny Hinson was elected to represent the sophomore class on the queen's court and was proud to accept the honor. Mr. Taylor was our advisor and a very wise one. We ordered our class rings the latter part of April and hope to get them soon after school begins in September of '54. l8 CLASS HISTORY cont. September 7, 1954, found us again visiting the little red-brick structure referred to as the school. Only now we had crossed another bridge and were known as iuniors. Our class officers were: Norman Puckett, president, Earl Sollars, vice-presi- dent, Barbara Kennard, secretary, Betty Looney, treasurer, Sally Hicks, sergeant at arms, Carol Picklesimer, news reporter. We finally received our class rings, and, of course, thought they were the best looking ones ever made. We were very sorry to lose Bobby Caudill to Madison Mills. We have missed him. LaVonne Webb got married during the summer. CI hope it isn't catching.l Jerry Har- per also decided against returning, leaving us only seventeen strong. Bill Gilfillen and Bob Laywell joined, but only for a short while. For activities, we had a dance November l3, sold pop at ball games and cleared a nice profit. We also put on a class play called Two Dates for Tonight , under the direction of Mr. Bennett which was lust fair. A Student Council was organized this year and our representatives were Wayne Williams, Norman Puckett, and Ginny Hinson. Pumpkin Show time soon rolled around and our school sent Barbara Kennard os Miss Darby who was grateful for the honor. Our iunior boys again hit the sports column with Jay Hill, Earl Sollars, Norman Puckett, and Wayne Williams playing varsity. This year Sally Hicks made the grade as a cheerleader along with Barbara Ken- nard, and Ginny Hinson who are now veterans of one and two years, respectively. For the annual homecoming game, the basketball boys chose as their queen Ginny Hinson and Lucille Wickline served as her attendant from our class. Carol Picklesimer did the honors as Mistress of Ceremonies for the game. Being a class that is always trying to be different, we gave the seniors a real lrlrl. The theme was ln the Garden . lt was beautiful if l do say so myselfTCgm- plete with a real name band. Don Decker's to be sure, and nothing less than the best. We certainly enioyed it whether the seniors did or not. The iunior girls also put out a school paper, with the much needed help of ole faithful Mr. Taylor. l might add that this was the first school paper put out in quite a few years. More honors came to our class when Betty Looney and Barbara Spangler were selected to be on the Honor Society Roll. That was an honor indeed, girls, and some thing to remember with pleasure. l9 CLASS HISTORY cont. Our advisor for the year was again Mr. Taylor. That man must be made of iron to stand up under such a strain as he's been under for the last two years. On September 6, l955, sixteen seniors returned to take that last long step toward achieving that long awaited diploma. Our class officers were: Norman Puckett, president, Earl Sollars, vice-presi- dentp Barbara Kennard, secretary, Jay Hill, treasurer, Ginny Hinson, news re- porter. As the undergrads will soon realize, seniors are always busy. First of all comes your studies which must not bogg down and then watch-out because that's only the beginning. Football was underway almost as soon as school was in progress. This was the first year for Darby's six-man team and we were very proud of our boys for tying with Pickaway and Jackson for third place in the league. Larry McPherson and WayneWilliams were in there bucking away for Darby from our class. The annual Circleville Pumpkin Show soon was upon us and the student body elected Ginny Hinson from our class to represent our school as Miss Darby . It is a wonderful honor to be chosen and Ginny was more than pleased. Basketball flew in and Darby was off to another fairly successful season. The seniors onthe varsity were: .lay Hill, Norman Puckett, and Larry McPherson. Our homecoming game found Betty Looney being elected as the charming queen from our class and Ginny Hinson as our senior attendant. Sally Hicks, Barbara Kennard, and Ginny Hinson also managed to hold down the iob of being cheerleaders for their last year. Other than giving the freshmen a wiener roast and skating party at Grove City for initiation, our activities were limited. However, we did manage to put on a very successful play entitled Whiz Kids , under the excellent supervision of Mr. Charles Meacham. lt drew a fine crowd and also money which was the main idea. Mr. Taylor was again our advisor by request and since he has done so much to help'our class through the last three years, we decided to dedicate our T955-56 yearbook to him. And so winds up the Class History of the Seniors of the 1955-56 Class. May all the remaining pupils in high school have the fun and gain the knowledge that we have acquired while attending 'dear ole Darby'. LARRY .1 CAROL ,gm 2 'Qu x V 23 JOANN '- eniot efau ptoplecy In this year of I976, I, Carol Picklesimer, have returned to Darby for our reunion of our Senior Class of l956. I, myself, have been traveling with my husband, who is making the air force his career. We are happily married, and have four healthy children. As I walked around the gym, I was glad to see all my classmates were there. I first spied Rosalie, standing by the refreshments. Her eyes were still as bright as usual, and she has finally been hitched in matrimony to her red-headed mechanic. Then I heard a voice behind me calling my name, as I turned, I saw Barbara Kennard, who is now Mrs. Steinmetz, standing there with her triplets, all girls, and their red hair in a pony tail. She is now living at Grove City and is very happily married. There's Gene Drummond! I have often wondered what he was doing. Well, he iust told me he has a IOOO acre farm, and he is also driving around in a handsome new Cadillac. Why Gene, I thought by this time they would be out of style. Excuse me, Gene, I see someone I want to say hello to. Lucille, how nice to see you again. Lucille Wickline was iust telling me she likes her teaching iob very well. I don't see how you ever escaped the marrying bug, Lucille. It will catch up with you one of these days. Oh, there's Jay. I'lI see you later, Lucy. Jay Hill, I hear you own the largest hot rod company in the U. 5. I always knew you'd whiz into some great project. I heard you just became the father of your fifth child. Con- gratulations, maybe he will be like his father. Say, Jay, I see your old high school flame, I must say hello to Ginny. Ginny Hinson, gee you look swelll Oh, I forgot your name has changed, hasn't it? I hear you were elected queen to represent Jay's hot rod fans. Good luck, kid. Someday you'Il be representing us as Miss America. Ginny, don't go away, I must talk to David before he leaves. Oh, David, David Strawser, gee, it's good to see you. How's Sandy? I hear you're be- coming America's favorite lawyer. I always knew you'd get a iob to protect the women, you're so thoughtful. Well, good luck. I must get something to drink, see you later. As I walked over to the refreshments, I ran into Sally Hicks. Oh, Sally's name has changed too. Sne married the country's leading athlete. Believe it or not, she is still a 22 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY cont. cheerleader for this team. That is what time she isn't having a child. They have five now, and the cheering helps her keep her girlish figure. Just keep cheering, Sally. Wayne Williams, l might have known l'd find you with a group of girls. Say, Wayne, how does it feel to be the president of General Motors? You always did go in for the big deals, didn't you? Well, I think you have done real well. Just keep up the old spirit. Wayne, please excuse me, I see Barbara Spangler. Barbara, I hear you are now writing books on How to Study . You were always one for the books. They told me you're really tolling in the money. Say, girl, you're very pop- ular, even though you're too busy to notice it. Say, Barb, I see one of our classmates is leaving, I must talk with him. Larry McPherson, how you've changed. l'lI bet you really have trouble keeping those women out of your hair. Maybe they are after that big farm you have iust won, in a trac- tor pulling contest. They sure picked a good farmer to put on it. Larry, l want to talk to Betty. Hi, Betty. Say, l know your name isn't Looney now. ldon't think lremember hearing your husband's name. l'll bet you're pretty proud of the trophy you just won as Miss Bath- ing Beauty of '76 . Those two little girls of yours are surely following in their'mother's foot steps. Betty, let's go talk to Earl. Earl Sollars,l hear you have a large family now. l don't remember what occupation you are in. It doesn't really matter, although I once heard you were styling women's clothes. How about that, you always did go in for interesting things. l want to see Norman before he leaves. Norman Puckett, say, are you looking greatl You always didl l hear you're still single. Well, l really don't see how you have escaped the girls all these years. You still have that same wonderful personality. Say, Norm, l hear you have iust won your tenth trophy as the healthiest person in America. Just keep smilingl You sure were a wonderful classmate, I shall never forget you. Now, l must say hello to JoAnn, my pal in high school days. Hi, Jo, it's good to see you. l hear you're getting along fine with your large family. Jo, remember in high school when we planned to go shopping together after we were mar- ried, and all the other things we had planned? lt sure was fun planning those dreams, but they were wonderfull l shall never forget this wonderful reunion, nor my classmates at Darby. They were so wonderful l l Carol Picklesimer 23 fad! SECOND ROW: Jock Walker, Paul Cocklin, John Swank, Carl Cocklin, Marvin Nance, Coach Mr. Arnett. There were 15 boys who went out for football this year. But unfortunately four dropped out. Football practice started on August 20, 1955. We played two preview games September 10 at the coliseum at Circ leville. Our first was with Pickaway which we won 6-0. Our second game was with Jackson which we lost 6-O. Following are the scores, dates, and teams with which we came up against: Septerrber 16, Ashville 42-6, September 24, Jackson 20-6, Octo- ber '1 , Williamsport 6-14, October 8, Pickaway 6-13, October 15, Walnut 0-20, October 29, Stoutsville 6-12. Darby tied for second place with Jackson. We think we had a pretty fair team seeing that this was our first year playing football. Next year we hope to be in first place. 62 ootfalf 662221444214 061955 The high school didn't have time to elect football cheerleaders, so the basketball cheerleaders of the latter season took over the honors. At the start of the football season, five cheerleaders started the season knowing nothing about football. But as the season advanced, we started to see the light. We wore white wool sweaters, and on our own we finally pur- chased black wool slacks to help us keep warm on those chilly nights. We enioyecl it after we learned a little about the game. Football cheerleaders were as follows: Sally Hicks, .lo Ann Kennard, Janet Wolfe, Janet Puckett, and Sarah .lane Liff. Sally Hicks 63 1956 vqomecominy Queen On Friday, February 3, the gymnasium was Filled with alumni, teachers, and friends of Darby and Ashville, our opponent for the homecoming game. Our queen was Betty Looney. She was attired in a white formal with a corsage of red carnations. Her senior attendant, Virginia Hinson, wore an aqua formal. The iunior attendant, Janet Puckett, wore a yellow formal, sophomore attendant, Geor- gia Deyo, wore a blue formal, and freshman attendant, Sandy Greenlee, wore a pink formal. The crowning of the queen and her attendants took place between the reserve and varsity games. Co-captains Ned Musselman and Norman Puckett escorted the queen, Ned having the honor of crowning her. The attendants were escorted by varsity boys from whom each received a beautiful corsage. The Mistress of Ceremonies were Carol Picklesimer and Rosalie Egnor. Dancing followed the Qame with Rush Thomas and his orchestra. sony Hicks 64 VARSITY FIRST ROW: Marvin Nance, Ned Musselman, Ronnie Gutheil, Joe McCoy, David John- son, Tommy Walters. SECOND ROW: Jay Hill, Norman Puckett, Bill Whiteside, Ernie Woods, Jack Walker, Coach, Mr. Arnett. faifetfaff .flguacf ln the year of '56' as basketball is slowly drawing to a close, Darby found themselves ending another season of play and a fairly successful one at that. The basketball boys would all like to thank our coach, Mr. Boone Arnett, for all the time and effort he put in with us trying to help us out in every way he could. After four years in high school there are three seniors who have played their last game for Darby They are Jay Hill, Norman Puckett, and Larry McPherson. Now here are some statistics on t'1e reserve and varsity games and also the high-point man of each game for Darby. 65 OPPONENT Soltcreek Midway Williamsport Fairfield Walnut Atlanta Stoutsville Madison Rural Scioto Fairfield Jackson Monroe I Pickaway West Jeff .
