Here at last! Everything seems so strange and different, but before long it will be over and we will look back with fond memories to those first few days of uncertainty. A class election was held to select the leaders of our class who would guide us through the next three years. We chose the following: President: James Goldey Vice-President: Sharon Johnson Secretary: Diane Redmond Treasurer: Barbara Bradley Historian: Bonnie Orr We had the excellent leadership and guidance of our class advisors, Miss Patricia Tanner and Mr. William Shaw. Starting the year off by participating in our first money-raising drive, we sold Christmas cards. In order to make our class “tops”, we knew we would need money. All pitched in and made the drive a success. We enjoyed our first football season as members of the Senior High. Our football team had a very successful season with a 5-3-1 record. A new member to the coaching staff, Mr. Neil Taylor, helped supplement the already great leadership of Mr. Jack Houtz and Mr. Ralph Naimoli. Verona Coleman was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1963 at our annual Homecoming Dance. The girls’ hockey team had another winning season. Miss Tanner, the new dramatics coach, presented a drama, “Our Town,” instead of the usual farce-comedy. The cast did an excellent job and should be commended for their performance. The class participated in the High School’s annual chocolate bar sale to raise money for the varsity club and for the sports banquets. Top honors went to the 12 CP class for selling the most bars. We looked forward to the start of the basketball season. Our teams in the past have been ones to be proud of. With a new coach, Mr. Andrew McBride, and four of the five starters also new to the varsity team, the boys did a marvelous job. They had a record of 19-2 after being defeated in the second play-off game. Congratulations boys! The girls’ basketball team should also be congratulated. Under the guidance of a new coach, Mi Helen Stratton, our girls had another undefeated season. Our class was the first to have a Tenth Grade Dance. It was held on April 3, 1964, with an appropriate theme, “April Showers.” After the excitement of the basketball season and our Tenth Grade Dance, we began to settle down and all thoughts turned to the Prom, which was held on May 1, 1964, at the Alpine Inn. The theme was “Shangri-La.” The music was provided by the Ronnie Lewis Orchestra. The evening was spent in “Shangri-La” and came to an end too soon. Our track and baseball teams put their best feet forward and achieved successful seasons. The end of the school year is nearing. Could it be that we’ll be Juniors next year? We have grown a great deal this year. We are more confident and are ready to take on the responsibilities as Juniors. We will never forget this, our first year, in Senior High. JUNIOR YEAR 74 Now we are Juniors! We had a great summer, but we are prepared to settle down to a year of hard work and a lot of fun. We decided to keep the same class officers. Our football team had an undefeated season with a 7-0-2 record. Mr. William Shaw was added to the coaching staff in place of Mr. Ralph Naimoli. Linda Rotonda, a 1964 graduate, reigned as Homecoming Queen. Our girls’ hockey team had another undefeated season. The school play this year, “Who Killed Aunt Caroline?” was a three act mystery. Miss Stiles and the cast should be congratulated for a fine performance. Basketball season was once more upon us. We had another victorious season. Our boys won the Section Four and District I Championships. They continued in the playoffs until they were defeated in the Eastern Regionals. Congratulations for a job well done! Congratulations to the girls’ basketball team for another undefeated season under the coaching direction of Mrs. Helen Dolphin. The biggest event of the year was upon us. We began to arrange everything for “our” Junior Prom. With the aid of the various prom committees, our “Polynesian Paradise” turned the Alpine Inn into a tropical isle. The Ronnie Lewis Orchestra set the mood for this memorable evening. An after-prom party was held at the Fireside Open Hearth. In keeping with the tradition of our school, the track and baseball teams had excellent seasons. Our year as Juniors has ended all too soon. We are looking forward to next year when we will be Seniors. As leaders and upperclassmen, we will try to carry Darby-Colwyn’s traditions into the surroundings of the new school. SENIOR YEAR This is it, our Senior Year! It seemed so strange to be a part of the unfamiliar environment of our new school. We soon forgot about the strange surroundings and were caught up in the many activities of our last year. The football team this year was lacking in wins but not in courage. They played each game with 4he Darby-Colwyn spirit and ended the season with a 3-6 record. The hockey team under the supervision of a new coach. Miss Jane Markert, completed a triumphant season with a 6-1 record. Some members of the student body under the guidance of Mrs. Condon began a school newspaper, the D-C Spectrum, this year. We have already seen two editions and it looks like it will be a success. Good Luck! Our president, James Goldey, resigned from office. We held an election and William Mansi was elected as our new president. Congratulations Bill! Our school play this year was “We’re All Guilty.” Congratulations to Miss Stiles and her cast for a job well done. Our boys’ basketball team has done it again. At this moment, they are Section three champions and are awaiting the playoff games. We know our boys will do their best and bring honor to themselves and to our school. Best of luck to a great coach, Mr. Andrew McBride, and his team. The girls’ basketball team completed their season with a 3-4 record. They showed spirit and sportsmanship throughout the season. Our last year in Darby-Colwyn is drawing to a close. Everything passed so quickly. After the yearbook goes to press, there are many things which will happen—the Junior Prom, the track and baseball seasons, Commencement and Baccalaureate services. We are now ready to face the responsibilities of a new life. We must say good-by to all our high school friends and teachers, but wre will never bid farewell to the wonderful memories of the years we have spent in Darby-Colwyn Senior High School. 75 Victory belongs to the most persevering. NAPOLEON Coaches: TAYLOR, HOUTZ, and SHAW Although this year’s football team was not the most successful, our boys never lost the spirit and determination to fight to the very end. Their hard work and the fine leadership of coaches Houtz, Shaw, and Taylor is not reflected in their 3-6 record. We, who watched them play know that such players as Paul Burdette, Ronald Coleman, James Levay, Andre Lynch, and Phillip Thomas will surely be missed. Nevertheless, we feel that our coaching staff can turn out a team with just as much fight as this year’s team had. 79 Congratulations to our hockey team! Our girls had a very successful season with a 6-1 record, and first place in Section Three. Under the able leadership of their new coach, Miss Jane Marked, the girls proved that their many hours of practice and hard work paid off. Although such outstanding seniors as Carol Bancroft, Annalee Bullman, Sharon Carey, Sandra Eidell, Jean Finnie, Sharon Sharpe, and Joyce Thomas will be leaving, we are sure that next year’s season will be just as successful. Unfortunately, at the completion of this yearbook, the fate of D-C’s “Big Five” was not known. Our boys, under the able direction of their coach, Mr. Andrew McBride, have had a very successful season thus far with twenty-two wins and only two losses. Through their hard work and superior skill, the team has clinched the Section three and District One Championships. We, the class of 1966, wish our team much success as they ascend the ladder in their quest for the State Championship. 83 SHARON The coaching of this year’s girls’ basketball team was in the capable hands of Miss Jane Markert. Although the team was not an undefeated one, the girls showed that practice and teamwork are essential in the success of any team. Many of our seniors will be gone next year, hut we feel confident that Miss Markert can provide Darby-Colwyn with a promising squad next season. baseball Our yearbook is at press, and our baseball team has not yet begun to practice. Nevertheless, the season looks promising. We are fortunate to have such lettermen as Ronald Coleman, Anthony Committee, Robert Shannon, and Robert Wiseley returning to swing the bat along with an eager group of juniors and sophomores. Best of luck to our new coach, Mr. Ralph Naimoli, and his team for a most successful season. - -3PB When our yearbook was sent to press, track season had not yet begun. However, with the return of such let termen as Paul Burdette, John Crawford, Frank Cullen, George Grimes, and Richard Jones, combined with the rest of the squad and the excellent coaching ability of Mr. Neil Taylor, we feel sure that our track team will have another successful season. Best of luck boys! 87 ‘Junior Varsity basketball T)-a 88 ‘Junior Varsity Hockey 3 junior Varsity basketball 89 FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA Concealed talent brings no reputation. ERASMUS 90 The most anticipated and elegant event in our junior year was the prom. This year was special because it was “our” prom, and after months of preparation, the evening of May 7, 1965 finally became a reality. It was hard to believe that our prom committee had transformed the Alpine Inn into a “Polynesian Paradise, ’ complete with tropical palm trees and lotus blossoms on a volcanic isle. This atmosphere made it easy to glide to the wonderful sounds of the Ronnie Lewis Orchestra, especially when the melody of our theme song, “Bali Hai,” filled the air. This year was also special because it marked the first year that our school voted for a Prom Queen. Miss Anna Ankerson lit up the evening as she accepted her well-deserved crown and a bouquet of red roses. The time passed too swittly, and as the clock struck twelve, we left our little island for the Fireside Open Hearth where we had a very enjoyable prom party. Everyone’s dreams were coming true and we will long remember our night in Paradise. Our many thanks to Mrs. Condon and Mr. Shaw for making our Junior Prom an event we will long remember. 93 “Who Killed Amt Caroline?” Last year’s laughed-filled play was a three-act farce entitled, “Who Killed Aunt Caroline?”. Laughter filled the auditorium as the audience watched the antics of the Endicott family-, the mysterious death of their rich and stern Aunt Caroline, the amusing investigation of her death, and the surprising outcome which brings to light a very involved suicide. Congratulations go to Miss Stiles and her fine cast. Their many hours of hard work were rewarded with great success. 94 THE CAST Mrs. Eleanor Endicotl ........... Agnes Endicolt .................. James Pascal DIRECTOR: Miss Marion L. Stiles This year’s three-act play takes place in a court room presided over by a woman judge who is understanding and experienced in dealing with juvenile cases. The play revolves around an automobile accident involving four teenagers. The audience is held spellbound as the trial of the teenage boy, who is being held responsible for the accident, takes place. After weighing all the evidence, the woman judge renders the decision that all four teenagers, as well as their parents, are guilty. The cast and directress, Miss Marion Stiles, worked hard to make this play a success. Our congratulations are extended to all who participated in this year’s fine production. 'f f U ‘ 97 EDITORIAL STAFF Keepers SECRETARIAL STAFF ART STAFF V9 Cheer “A cheerleader is someone who has school spirit, pep and vitality.” This is what our girls were told by Carol Houke, who owns a cheerleading camp in the mountains where our senior cheerleaders, Freda Coleman, Karen May, and Susan Wolf went for a w'eek last summer. They learned w'hat a cheerleader does and how to keep the crowd cheering. To prove they did learn more about their job, they brought home an Honorable Mention ribbon w’hich they won in final competition. Our girls have done a great job in cheering our football players through a tough season. They did an equally fine job in boosting the spirit of D-C’s “Big Five” on the basketball court in league competition, as wrell as during the playoff games. With the help of their coach, Mrs. Hilda Boone, the cheerleaders have shown that practice and determination add up to give our school a reason to be proud of their fine group of high-spirited girls. Congratulations on a job well done! MRS. BOONE Marching Kams Highlighting our football games are the Band, under the capable guidance of our new conductor, Mr. Joseph Cataldo, and the Color Guard and Majorettes, directed by Mrs. Marlene Bottomley. This year the band has developed into a first-rate musical organization and has successfully performed such entertaining numbers as “Mr. Lucky” and “Peter Gunn” with the Color Guard and Majorettes adding their grace and talents. SHARON 102 BAND OFFICERS Under the direction of Mr. Anthony DiJulio, the chorus has proved itself an asset over the years. This year was no exception. A varied and thoroughly enjoyable program was presented both at Christmas and Easter. The Spring Concert was just as outstanding with such selections as “Exodus” and the “Sound of Music” beautifully performed. Congratulations to a fine choral group on their successful year. We welcomed as the director of our orchestra, Mr. Cataldo. With patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm he has made this year an outstanding one. Everyone will remember the various assembly programs and the excellent Spring Concert in which he and his orchestra played such an important part. Our sincere praise is extended to the orchestra and its conductor from the entire school. Student Council MONITORS Mr. Goldstein and his busy officers.
