We entered a strange new world of Senior High School. How big everything looked to us! At once, we felt the need for some firm leadership. We turned wide eyes upon our fellow classmates and chose the following to guide us: President: Thomas Spence Vice-President: Donald Marchini Secretary: Margaret Chambers Treasurer: William Johnson We started to overcome our timidity, and bit by bit began to participate in the many activities. Our football team really did a good job. They won the first Section Four Championship in eighteen years. Naturally, we were quite proud of them. We initiated our annual chocolate bar sale to raise money for the varsity club and for the sports banquets. The drive was very successful. Our dramatic group, under the direction of Miss Sandra Pierucci, spent long hours in rehearsal for the play, “Junior Prom.” The many days of toil resulted in a fine and humorous performance by the cast. In Reading, at Albright College, a long-desired dream became a reality. For many years our team struggled to attain this goal, and it was finally achieved during our Sophomore year. Our basketball team became Class B State Champions. The girls’ team had a winning season, too. What a year for sports! With the Spring came thoughts of the Prom. This year it was held at the Alpine Inn. A1 Raymond provided the music we dreamed and danced to. Our first year in high school has ended. We have grown a great deal. We are more sure of ourselves and are looking forward to next year, when we will no longer be the “babies” of senior high. JUNIOR YEAR Now we are Juniors! We all look older, more assured, and more determined. We prepare to settle down to two years of much hard work and much fun. A few changes were necessary. Roland Flowers was elected to replace William Johnson as treasurer. We were sorry to lose Bill: he did a fine job during his year in office. We added another officer, me, to record our class history. Once again. Darby-Colwyn High School became the home of champions. Our football team won the Section Four Co-Championship, with a record of eight wins and one loss. With the defeat of Collingdale, we crowned Elizabeth Cummings our Homecoming Queen. Mrs. Higgins led our hockey team through an undefeated season. Miss Pierucci and her performers turned in one of the funniest performances that Darby-Colwyn has ever seen. The play, entitled “A Rocket in His Pocket,” centered around the antics of a kooky class in a Midwest school and 64 was climaxed by the launching of a rocket from the stage. It was really wild! Our basketball team—unbelievable!-—undefeated for two years, a string of fifty straight victories, topped off by the winning of its second straight State Championship. These boys are truly a credit to our school and community. Their fine behavior, both on and off the court, has given Darby-Colwyn a true Champion’s reputation. Those of us who traveled to Pittsburgh will never forget the thrill we felt when our team brought the championship to Darby-Colwyn again. With the melting of the ice and snow, come thoughts and visions of the Prom. This time it is “our” Junior Prom. The Falcon House was chosen as the site of our “Enchanted Evening,” and the Paul Edwards Orchestra provided the music. Everyone looked so different! It was difficult to believe that these people were our classmates. The night slipped away too swiftly, but it will never fade from our memories. We are now ending our last period of “babyhood.” Next year will be the last growing period before we emerge as adults. We eagerly await the new responsibilities and tasks which we face as Seniors next year. SENIOR YEAR We can hardly believe that we’re Seniors! We keep looking around for the Seniors, not realizing that they’re gone. I guess we feel a little lost without them. This year we had the excellent leadership and guidance of our class advisors, Mr. Richard C. Crater and Mrs. Gertrude C. James. We knew it was bound to be a good one. Our football team had another winning season with a 5-3-1 record. Along with Mr. Houtz and Mr. Naimoli, we added a new coach. Mr. Taylor. Verona Coleman reigned as our Homecoming Queen. Miss Tanner, the new dramatics coach, presented a drama, “Our Town,” instead of the usual farce-comedy. The cast and directoress did a commendable job. Once again we sold chocolate bars in order to raise funds for the varsity club. Much to everyone’s surprise, the 12 CP class took top honors in the selling of the most bars. We looked forward to the start of the basketball season. We had a new head coach, Mr. Andrew McBride, and four of the five starters were new to the varsity. Mr. McBride and Company had a fine season with a 19-1 record. As this yearbook goes to press, we are waiting to participate in th£ second play-off game. We know our team will do its best—and what more can we ask? Miss Stratton, the new coach of the girls’ basketball team, led it through an undefeated season. Our last year is drawing to a close. The months passed so quickly—I guess it was because we were kept so busy. A whole new life lies before us—just waiting to be discovered. We must say good-by to our school days at Darby-Colwyn, good-by to our friends, and yes, good-by to our childhood, but we will never bid farewell to the memories of the wonderful years we spent at Darby-Colwyn Senior High School. 65 Unbounded Courage and Compassion Join’d . . . Make the Hero and the Man Complete. JOSEPH ADDISON- 66 ATHLETICS 68 Coaches: HOUTZ, TAYLOR, and NAIMOLI Once again, our football team had a very successful season. Under the able leadership of our new coaching staff— Mr. Houtz, Mr. Naimoli, and Mr. Taylor. Although plagued by injuries, the team, led by the fine rushing of Harry Nelson and the strong defensive play of Tom Spence and Walt Realer, compiled a 5-3-1 record. We certainly salute a job well done. 69 COACH STRATTON HOCKEY Under the competent supervision of Coach Helen Stratton, our girls have reached the top again. This year marked the second straight undefeated season for the D-C Ramettes. The squad will miss such fine players as Sharon Henderson, Jackie Sharpe, Jackie Harris, Donna McDowell, Marva Whitsett and Beverly Young. The teamwork exhibited made the games interesting as well as exciting. We will always have reason to be proud of our hockey squad, and wish the future teams much success. Although most of our starting players of last year’s championship team have left, we are still gifted with a talented squad. They have proved this by closing their regular season with nineteen victories and only one defeat. By so doing we have captured the Section Four Championship. Now as our book goes to press, once again, we begin to climb the ladder towards the State Championship. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Andrew McBride and the desire of the boys, we are confident that they will do well. a UNDEFEATED Our girls are once again outstanding. They have shown their athletic skills by winning game after game, finally coming to an undefeated halt. This goal could not have been achieved without the competent coaching of Miss Stratton and the all-out effort of the girls. Congratulations! BASEBALL When we sent our yearbook to press, our baseball team had not yet begun its season. However, with the return of such lettermen as Tom Spence, Roland Flowers, Jimmy King, Larry Hild, and David Young, and with the many new boys joining the ranks, we look forward to this year optimistically. We have no doubts that Mr. Solar and the boys will have a very successful season. TRACK At the time of our yearbook’s completion, the track team, under the direction of Mr. Ralph Naimoli, had not yet seen action. However, we look forward to a bright season. The team has lost such members as David Kennard, Larry Dupree, and Andy Roberts, but we are confident that our team will continue to break records. Kenny Thomas, Howard Shirlow, Harry Collins, George Lott, and Leonard Guy will combine with the rest of the squad for what we hope will be a successful year. We waited with great anticipation for the arrival of this “en- “A ROCKET IN HIS POCKET” The audience roared with laughter as they viewed the scientific, athletic and romantic antics of the students and faculty of Rimrock High. The three-act farce comedy, “A Rocket in His Pocket,” blasted off to be one of the best plays Darby-Col wyn’s dramatic club has ever presented. We would like to extend praise to Miss Pierucci and Mrs. Cohen, our directors, for enabling the play to be such a success. 84 THE CAST Spaceman Arlin Abbott Harry Cooper Janis Broun Judy Mills Jackie ... . .. This year we switched from our usual farce comedy to a serious play. “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder is a play known and loved by all. The cast knew this and realized that they would have to work extra hard to make it a success. After many long hours of practice, the night of the play came. The curtain went up and we knew that no school could have done a better job. The class of ’64 gives their congratulations to Miss Tanner and Miss Stiles, as well as the entire cast, for a difficult job well done. In the gym, on the field, and at our pep rallies—the girls were there boosting the morale of both the students and the teams. Miss Barnes and our cheerleaders deserve much praise and gratitude for long hours spent in practice and for a fine coordinated result. Our thanks go to them for a job well done! 91 ‘ Again this year our Band, under the able direction of Mr. Gerald Brown, displayed many impressive halftime performances. Along with our Color Guard and high-stepping Majorettes, they gave their memorable rendition of Hesitation Strut and Miss Majorette. In appreciation, we would like to extend our sincere praise to an organization well deserving of it. BAND OFFICERS 93 DOWN BEAT! We were all very proud and pleased with the fine performances given by our chorus and orchestra this year.
