The boys seem to agree listening to him is fun. Standing around and chatting is a lot more fun than studying—eh, Ray? Now let's sae—how do we find the Gross ProfP ? Making out those bookkeeping stjtements is no easy task. A bevy of beauties spending their leisure time smiling for the photographer. Barbara. Cookie. Pat and Laura all agree it's real fun. That's our Jimmy—always playing around. Ask Bonnie. What can be nicer than to pose for pictures on a bright, sunny day? s4etcuitce s4c64tO€vlect$ HeHt4, 'ponecowict Rockets, satellites and missiles—a time set apart because of its great scientific achievements, and yet, this year as in many preceding years, when the month of June rolls around, graduation day will take first place in the lives of young men and women both here in Darby, and all over the United States. It is with this thought in mind that we present our Yearbook. Life, like a rocket, has three stages: the past, the present, and the future. As you leaf through the pages of this book we invite you to share with us OUR PRESENT AND FUTURE, and perhaps a few glimpses into the past. It is our sincere hope that as our Rocket of Life is launched into the future, that we, the seniors, will lead purposeful, meaningful lives and be worthwhile and useful citizens. The hours spent in the Art room with the hard-working Miss Szieleit were always a source of enjoyment and a wonderful feeling of achievement. The students were always proud of their creations displayed in the halls of our school, and we were always happy to see them. These scenes will always bring back to us a feeling of nostalgia, and will remind us of the many happy days spent at our school. They will help us to realize in later life that the best hours of our youthful days were spent at Darby High School. There is no doubt that we will turn to these pages many times m the years to come. Murray and Peel are seen here getting a taste of what it is like to work in the Principal's office. They do not look happy, to say the least. These fair damsels are certainly discussing the pros and cons of shorthand. Their minds are going around in circles with all the curves they have to think about in that subject. Have courage, girls, it may someday mean your bread and butter. You can always depend on Chickie for something funny and entertaining. Myrna and Elaine seem to be enjoying her story, but look at Pat—is she? As Mr. Deery turns over the books of our school district to Mr. Saner, he is extending to him best wishes in his new assignment as Superintendent of the Darby schools. Those are our sentiments too. Lots of luck to you, Mr. Saner. We also hope that Mr. Deery will find much happiness in whatever path he chooses to travel. ADMINISTRATION v v, . No one is better qualified than Mr. Saner in giving sound advice on how to cope with the problems of a high school Principal. Here we see our Principal, Mr. Solar, listening with a feeling of eagerness to the words of wisdom given him by our Superintendent of Schools. We all feel these two men will make a good team in caring for the welfare of our student body. — r-V SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1959 E-Yeh-Shire in the poem Beauty says: Beauty is in yourself. Good deeds, happy thoughts That repeat themselves In your dreams, In your work, And even in your rest. Principal PRINCIPAL Now that you are graduated from high school, many avenues of endeavor will be open to you. Each of you will select a different walk in life. Some may choose the arts; some, the sciences; some, a literary life; some, an industrial or selling career, anpl more than lively many of you will marry and establish new homes. As you venture into these new fields you will be appraised according to your ideals and your attainments. Whatever you do and wherever you go, the things you say or do will reflect the instruction and training you received in our school. All of us on the faculty will eagerly follow your progress as the years go by because we are interested in you and hope that your accomplishments will add more prestige to yourself and glory to your Alma Mater. JAMES DAVID WEISS Bookkeeping lie • •• bwiss 19 S. Sixth Street 46 7faee Stayed FIRST STAGE Well, here we are, at the site of the rocket ship Darby, ready to be launched. We have been working nine years for this occasion and soon we will be on our way. Many of the passengers are skeptical of the outcome of the flight but all are anxious to begin. The count-down has now begun !?!... 5-4-3-2-I BLAST-OFF! Under the leadership of Mr. Carl Truxel and Miss Sarah Zimmerman our trip was very smooth. Right from the start we raised money 'in case of any emergencies and we also chose crew members who along with the advisers would help guide us to our goal. The following were chosen: Thomas Collins—Chief Navigator Barbara Maurer—Assistant Navigator Janet Carlin—Recording Technician Fred Truitt—Financial Manipulator Barry Gambrill—Keeper of the Log Although we had much work cut out for us, we did, however, find time to stop at different planets to play sports. The football season was a good one, and was followed by a banquet for all those who participated. This was held at the famous Media Inn. We will never forget Mr. Evans' comments. We were going so fast that in no time we found ourselves in the midst of the basketball season. What a great season it was. Our boys won the Kiwanis Tournament; took second place in the league, and won the P.I.A.A., District I, Class B championship. Some of the passengers performed a play, Where's Laurie. We will never forget the fun we had watching the play. It was a grand performance. The spring sports were enjoyed by all. The baseball team had a good season, while the track team won the State championship in the mile relay. June arrived and we were getting ready for the break-away of the first stage of the rocket. After this break-away we would remain in orbit for a little vacation before starting the motors of the second stage. SECOND STAGE We're off again—on our second stage. We made only one change in our leaders. Carol Sealy replaced Janet Carlin as Financial Manipulator. We raised more money by selling Christmas cards and Easter candy. We knew much money was needed to make our venture a success, and we really pitched in. The usual sports seasons developed. In the fall our football and hockey teams hung up some outstanding records. We were proud of our boys and girls. At this point we must mention the School Band and cheerleaders who helped so much to add color to these events. 50 The basketball season proved to be another great success. Our girls played some very good basketball to do a good job. But our boys continued to ride the top by first taking first place in the League, and then copping the P.I.A.A., District I, Class B title for the second straight year. Our annual Spring Festival was another great success. The baseball team and track squad added more glory to our school. Now came the time of the Junior Prom and we were responsible for putting it on. It was held at the Twentieth Century Club. We were all out in orbit that night, and many nights after we remembered that gala occasion. The Little Dog Laughed. No, it is not a fact; it was a wonderful play presented by our school to a most appreciative audience. Our students can certainly put on a good show. Now comes the lull before the third and final stage. THIRD STAGE We are now going higher and higher—round and round. We are in the last stage, and it is moving ever so rapidly. But we continue to partake of the usual annual activities. There was only one change in our leaders. Doris Watkin replaced Carol Sealy as Financial Manipulator. Our hockey team was fast and completed a most successful season. The boys of the football squad finished the season with the best record achieved in many years. In our haste we forgot to mention that Mr. Edward B. Deery retired from his position of Superintendent of Schools. Our Principal, Mr. J. Wallace Saner succeeded to Mr. Deery, and Mr. Herman W. Solar left our Commercial Department to take over the job of Principal. Our best wishes went with them. Our boys' basketball team did it again! The boys won the P.I.A.A., District I, Class B championship for the THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR! Boy, what a record. Our Thespians conducted another excellent play. Mr. Pollock and his cast deserve much credit for No More Homework. Uh Uh, contact has been lost. Nothing is coming in! What is happening now? How far did our varsity basketball team go in the State playoffs? What kind of a season did the baseball and track teams have? How was the Junior Prom in this stage? Did everybody get on the graduating list? How was the Baccalaureate service, and how did the commencement go? Gosh, those electronic gadgets. Just can't depend on them. Seriously, folks, the Yearbook was already on the printing press before these questions could have been answered. 51 Se uan- SfraticafAt BEST ALL-AROUND MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Fred Truitt Patricia Stanton 53 Senavm itt Om6ct JANE ALLEN USUAL REMARK Huh? We will always remember the many beneficial experiences which came out of these extracurricular activities. Every hour spent in these events helped to add more joy and pleasure in our daily school life. UEIC( The play was based on a sophomore psychological student's aim to psychoanalyze all the members of her family while home for the summer. She was practicing on everyone: her father, who was a business rival against her brother's girl's father; her overanxious mother and her frierfds; her brother, etc. The meeting of a college student of the opposite sex and the kick-back of her family brought her back to her senses. There was confusion and fighting; especially when her brother tried a little psychological trickery to bring his father and his girl's father together. The people in the audience roared throughout the performance of the play. It was rated one of the best ever presented on our stage. Mr. Pollock and the members of the cast had a great deal of fun doing the play, and were sorry to see the final curtain go down. THE PLAYERS Laurie Huntington ......... Marti Boyd '61 99 No More Homework, one of our most successful plays in years, was performed before a standing-room-only audience. The play proved what can happen when the pupils take over the administration of the school. The plot was developed amid a liberal sprinkling of fisticuffs, bucket-fights and romance. What a combination! The unusually large cast of seventeen served to heighten the interest, and that, plus a few selections played by our Dance Band during intermission, added up to a very enjoyable evening. Mr. Pollock and his Staff deserve Sifel tRecentCeHa. otf £ve My sincerest feeling of appreciation is extended to the members of the Staff for their fullest cooperation and high degree of efficiency. Their contributions have made this yearbook an achievement upon which we will look back in the years to come with many fond memories. We shall be able to read these pages as though they were portals to the past through which we may see our happy years at Darby Senior High School. Sincerely yours, EDITORIAL STAFF ART STAFF THOMAS COLLINS Editor in Chief ATHLETIC STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY STAFF 4% Our cheerleaders have been on the sidelines cheering for our boys at every football and basketball game. With the entire student body backing them up these girls have helped to provide that cheering spirit which is so vital to the success of our teams. Of course, without the untiring guidance of Mr. Crater these girls could not have made the cheering so successful. The girls worked hard learning new cheers and then teaching them to the students. Congratulations to these girls for a job well done. MR. RICHARD CRATER Coach KATHY EVELYN MARTHA Cowboys and Indians? Spectators at Darby's football games this season may have thought they strayed a bit too far west. However, closer examination revealed that it was our Band under the direction of Mr. Streit in the midst of one of its specialty arrangements which made a hit with everyone. The versatile Majorettes and fine marching Color Guard added to the festivities and, with the band, provided a pleasing combination, both musically and to the eye. CATHY COLOR GUARD MR. ALBERT STREIT Director , MAJORETTES Ocvi We were very fortunate in having Mr. DiJulio and Mr. Streit with us to direct our musical activities. Their great amount of experience reflected upon the fine si-nging and instrumental performances of our harmonic organizations. The members of our Chorus performed in excellent fashion in the Christmas and Easter programs. The orchestra gave us many moments of pleasure and relaxation. It is significant to note that most of the instrumental players took their first lessons from Mr. Streit and his staff. We are proud of the high esteem in which our musical groups are held in the metropolitan Philadelphia area. •. Co Many hours were spent in the bandroom, music room and auditorium in order to reach toward a degree of perfection. Our great basketball teams that showed the boys of the rest of the county will always be remembered. Can we forget the fine play of our football teams, and can we forget the wonderful hockey teams that gave all of the others a pretty rough time. Yes, when it comes to sports we are on top. COLLINS WEISS SMITH BROWN MARSHALL We can still picture those thrilling long runs of our halfbacks and those smashing drives of Jim Weiss. With much help from our great line our gridsters steadily improved as the season progressed. In the second half of the grid campaign our team was considered the best in the county. Our boys completed the best record in many years. Our coaches are looking forward to an even greater season next year with most of the boys returning for another campaign. We wish them much luck. PUGH BROSIUS MESSICK JONES JOHNSON gambrill Waller The hockey team can look back on a very successful season. All the hours the girls spent in practice under the patient direction of Mrs. Haun produced a team that played well and had the stamina to keep fighting until the final whistle. The teamwork exhibited made the games interesting, as well as, exciting. We will always have reason to be proud of our hockey squad, and wish the future teams continued success. - S oote i P.I.A.A., DISTRICT I, CLASS B CHAMPIONS FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR! For the second time in the history of our school it was our pleasure to witness this great achievement. Blessed with such veteran basketeers as Bobby Trent, Wally Miller, John Realer and the great Gary Kasmer it was inevitable that this fine record should become a reality. Stan Hill, Barry Gambrill and the rest of the squad helped make our team the strongest in its class. As the book went to press our team was preparing for the State playoffs with our best wishes. Gary Kasmer, who made everybody's ALL team, Bob Trent, Tom Collins, Barry Gam-brill, Mel Garner, Wendy Pugh, Dick Mazzola and Dave Phillips will be missed but will always root for us in years to come. Cray, Grant, Long, Overton, Watlcin, Carlin, Jones, Allen, Dennis. Gamble, Coach Haun. Tops in basketball—that's us. Mrs. Haun's excellent coaching and the fine play of the girls brought the Ramettes through with seven wins and three losses. The guards did an excellent job defensively, while the sharp-shooting forwards netted many points to help us achieve this fine record. Our long hours in the gym with our coach where we learned team-work and good sportsmanship really paid off in our close, exciting games. The squad will miss such fine players as Jane Allen, Janet Carlin, May Grant, Kay Jones, Pam Long and Doris Watkin. However, we feel certain next year's team will be great. 84 07iac COACH GARIS Track shoes had not yet kicked the dust when our yearbook went to press. However, with the bulk of last year's squad back, the cinder season promised to be a long-remembered one. Such excellent runners as Tom Collins, Arnold Hack, Jack Orr, John Murphy and Mel Garner kept our hopes high for many firsts in the running events. Bill Brown, Bob Murray, Earl Messick, Al Jones and Fred Truitt were sure to capture honors in the field events. These boys plus the rest of the squad made Coach Garis feel optimistic for the season. ‘geue stli COACH McBRIDE Our new baseball coach, Mr. McBride, had not yet taken over his duties with the team when this book was in the last stages of completion. However, things looked good with the return of veteran players such as Richie Mazzola, Al Grigg, Barry Gambrill, Weldon Robinson, Gary Kasmer, Ed Shirlow, Jim Weiss and John Kennard. Prospects looked even brighter with the many candidates who showed an eagerness to become part of the squad. The game of baseball is on its way up here at school, and we hope the team will bring home the bacon for the 1959 season. MENU UNDER GRADS These fair damsels reflect the many happy moments spent at Darby Senior High School. Yes, our undergraduate days were super. We will spend most of our lives reliving the surprises and disappointments which constituted our high school careers. We hope those who follow us will leave a record behind them that every Darby High alumnus will be proud of.
