On some days there were general contests in which all the knights present who were desirous of winning praise took part, and, being divided into two bands of eleven each, might fight it out manfully until the signal was given by Sir Rice Mountjoy to cease combat. In the latter part of September they were prepared for the Stanford battle. At this, their first tourney of the year, the knights certainly proved their skill against the challenger: by the count of 4.8 to 6. On the twenty-ninth of September, a joust was held between the Paris knights and the local champions. This was the first home tourney of the year, and the lists presented a splendid spectacle, with the sloping galleries crowded with all lovers of football. At this and the other home contests, the music of the band breathed from time to time wild bursts expressive of triumph and defiance. The shouts of the multitude announced the victory of the Danville men as 26 to 0. Then came n heart-breaking defeat of the blue clad knights at Louisville on the sixth of October by the Male challengers. lt was near the close of the tourney with the chal- lenged ahead by one touchdown! Then the marshals of the field came between the con- testants, and, by the laws of tournament, declared a fifteen-yard penalty on which the opposing knights were able to score and win thereby. They continued with victory when they defeated the Lexington knights 26 to 6. After this LW, they easily conquered the Trojan knights of Mount Sterling, 57 to 6. l l Then came the tourney with their challengers of hostile blood, the knights of Somer- . 1 i set. When the two champions stood opposed to each other at the two extremities of the Ui X lists, the public expectation was strained to the highest pitch, but our knights proved their N valor and endurance, and were victors to the count of 46 to O. ii X l . , ln the following weeks the football knights met and defeated Lancaster 24 to 0, Bardstown 25 to 0, and in the last tourney of the year the knights at Richmond I8 to 0. , l ' , Amid the varied fortunes of all these combats, the eyes of everyone endeavored to discover the leaders of our band, Cook and B. Tucker, who, mingling in the thick of the il fight, encouraged their champions both by voice and example. ' Less glorious and even less thrilling combats have been described in heroic verse, hence we wish to congratulate here such noble sirs as Bible, Carson, Cook, Gordon, Kelly, M. Love, Lynn, Rulon, Scott, B. Tucker, L. Tucker, Williams, and Young for their exceptional tourney skill and valor, and Sir Rice Mountjoy for his priceless leadership and guidance. .X V v 1 l l .I y l ' 1 ri A an.: - y gal ,f :yr l -A V i iyill 1 ia it ilul i I lzkl , Y Y so ex i N . als l fig : 7 r e L L 59 5 l gfiidltifllluii '22 f X 2' for ,5 tl x7 I cfff I ,girl .dai N L.. . aff? if C , . The Admirals were handicapped from the start by their size and inexperience, but they proved themselves worthy of their name during the entire season. They Went as far as any Admiral team has ever gone toward winning the state championship. They became the runners-up. . The players worked hard and before the month was over they had defeated such teams as Hustonville, Buena Vista, Burgin, -Iunction City, Alumni, and Forkland, all teams in neighboring towns. ln Ianuary the Admirals settled down to a slow grind and conquered such teams as Nlanual, Lexington, Paris, Nlaysville, Somerset, and Mt. Sterling. Heart-breaking games were lost to Ashland, Hazard, and Manual. One of the high points of the season was the return game with Ashland in the local gymnasium. Although Holman Cotton, the outstanding forward, and Earl Carson, the valuable captain, were on the bench, the Admiral netters played wonderful basketball and were defeated IQ to 17. After conquering Wilmore, the last game on the regular schedule, the Admirals began to prepare for the District Tournament which was held in Danville. They took District Tournament with ease. Then the Big Blue entered the Regional at Stanford the following week. With little difficulty the Admirals managed to win the Regional tournament, then they entered the State tournament which was held at the University of Kentucky gymnasium- in Lexington, Marcli 16-18. 6 Although the Admirals were considered the underdog, they sprang a big surprise for Kentucky sport loversl They won victories over Central City and Highlands by spectacular playing in the last few minutes. The third game in which the Admirals contested was with Horse Cave-one of the most exciting games in the whole tournament. The Nlountjoymen were victorious in this conflict by 26 to 24. The score of 26 to 13 in the last game of the tournament, between Danville and Ashland, made Ashland state champions and the Admirals runners- up. Besides this honor, another recognition came to the players when Earl Carson, the Admiral captain, was chosen as the player showing the greatest leadership during the tournament, so becoming captain of the all-state team. We of The Nrzuiilm staff fully realize that our basketball team and coach were well deserving of the honor that came to them. And we hope that they will continue to follow that motto of knighthood, K'Follow the G1eam of sportsmanship. 60 it is 'I -.115 I wt, 1 Ns! 61112 gtiautilus '34 'Rairzu sun, and rain! and the free blossom blows Sun, rain, and sun! and where is he who knows?
