Clues Prophecy As I was wandering through the attic one gloomy, rainy day in 1935, I came across an old moth-eaten, ragged book on the back of whch was printed in the handwritng of my school days, D, H. S. Notes, Class of Twenty-six . It had been a number of years since I had left D. H. S., but having occasionally kept clippings of my old classmates, I decided to spend the morning reviewing what had happened since we parted on graduation day. On the very first page was a newspaper clipping which ran: President Banks Hudson, Jr., of Yale College .... here the clipping ended, but I remembered Banks as our class president in the Sophomore, junior, and Senior classes. The next thing was a picture of Elizabeth Walter, under which was written: Ziegfield's Leading Lady, noted for her alluring eyesn. Thirty-one S 79263 f SIGNING? It is a good record and even the knocker is compelled to recognize it. That is the record of the Danville Admiral basket ball team for the season 1925-26. Coach Bevarly, former basketball star at Kentucky Wesleyan College, found a bunch of willing, ambitious, and capable net tossers when he took charge of them in November. He ironed out all the weak spots, drilled constantly and produced the best eight men that have ever represented Danville High School in any athletic endeavor. Bevarly found plenty of co-operation. The student body believed in its team from the first and the team believed in itself. The eight boys who represented Danville High on the basket- ball court did so only after they had waged a terrific fight to eliminate other candidates. Finding themselves among the first eight, they worked to stay there. All teams have their off-nights. All teams take and lose Ubreaksn. Danville was no exception. The Admirals beat the highly-touted Lexington Blue Devils to a frazzle for three quarters and then lost on a few unfortunate breaks. All illustration of an off-night was seen when Picadome took in our boys. But the admirable characteristic of the Admirals' fight and comeback, always manifested itself and righted them. That same old fight gained for them the name of The Admirable Admirals at the state tournament at Lexington. The Admirals lost their first game of the season when Columbia slipped up on them and slapped them in the face. Danville showed their real abiity and won I5 games in a row. During that seige they took Lindsey-WVilson, K. S. D., Lawrenceburg, Kavanaugh twice, University High, Paris twice, Carrollton, Lebanon, Richmond, Winchester, Monticello, Somerset, and Science Hill twice. Then they dropped three in a row. The biggest suprise came when Picadome downed them two days before the Lexington game. Lexington defeated them on 'fbreaksf' and then they went to Somerset and dropped another. Next Columbia fell and the Admirals were revenged for their first defeat of the season. The tournament came, and the Admirals went through it in such a manner as to demonstrate that nothing in the district compared with them. The meet was most capably handled by the high school students, managed by Manager WL C. Borders, and all the visitors were made to feel at home, even in defeat. The Admirals scored 138 points in the tournament, while their opponents were scoring 50. Monticello, Moreland, Somerset, and Science Hill bowed to the Admirals during the meet. Somerset, a dangerous entry, found herself trailing O-I4 when the half of the Admiral-Briar jumper game was over. The contest ended 23 to II. In the finals the Admirals easily defeated Science Hill 4.1 to 16. Next was the state tournament. Henderson fell first before our Admirals, 24 to 19. Then Winchester, following in the footsteps of Henderson, was swamped by the Admirals 42 to 19. Then came Ashland! The Admirals here reached the climax of their playing for the year. They also gained for themselves the name Most Sportsmanlike Team in the Tournament. The score at the end of the game was 16 all. During the extra three minutes Danville scored three points and held the opposition scoreless. The following night the Admirals met St. Xavier in the finals and lost 26 to 13. The week following St. Xavier annexed the national title in the Catholic world. At last came Chicago. The Admirals had a marvelous trip to the VVindy City and learned enough to make them win the state championship next year. They won no games in the National, but they returned home with fond memories of a great trip and a lesson well-learned. Captain Chess Shearer, Clinton Gooch, all-state centerg Robert May, all-state guardg Lecil Hamiltong Ray Woolridgeg Ed Lawrenceg Louis Linney, and Leonard Hines made up the first eight. Wilmer Smith, Reed Wooldridge and Stuart Lynn were the remaining members of the squad. Seven of the first eight and all ,of the first Eve will return next year. They will be satisfied with nothing short of a state championship and Oh Boy, VVatch Them Go Get It. The girls went to the finals in the district tournament and were defeated by Science Hill who had one of the best teams in the state. Miss Anita Currey, a former student and basket ball star of Kentucky College for Women, was coach and much credit is due her. She moulded a good team out of a bunch of inex- perienced players, for with the exception of two, the team was entirely new. Her efforts will show up next year more strongly, for only one of the first eight will be graduated. Miss Currey found a hard working and interested bunch of girls and this contributed much to the success of the season. The first game was won very easily from the D. Sc D. girls by the score of 16 to 5. Later on in the season they defeated this team again by the score of I3 to 6. In the early part of the season they also defeated the Alumnae team by the score of 7 to 3. This game is always regarded as one of the toughest of all the contests. In the next two meets the Blue Belles split even, losing to junction City and Winning over the Lawrenceburg lassies. Both were hard-fought games and the better team won both times. junction City succeeded in defeating the Danville girls later. Science Hill administered defeat twice to the Blue Belles in their regular season, but Danville defeated the Houstonville team twice by the scores of ro to S and ro to 1. The Blue Belles handled their old rivals, the Somerset girls, in fine style, defeating them on their own floor by the one-sided score of I4 to 2. Every team has its off-nights and its tough breaks and those two things were shown in the Lebanon and Parksville games. The Blue Belles were defeated by Parksville by a tough break. . h . I But the same admirable characteristic which appeared in the boys' team showed up in t e gir s, the old fight and come-back. ' h th b s and contributed their share of the victory The Blue Belles went to Richmond wit e oy. by swamping the Richmond girls I5 to 1. Then on the following night they downed Burgin II to S. In both of these games the outstanding element was co-operation. The team then contested in the district tournament, drawing a tie for the first session of the meet. In a most thrilling game the Blue Belles defeated the Moreland girls and went into the finals. In this game with Science I-Iill the girls played their best game of the whole season and held the district winners to the narrow margin of rr to 8. This ended the season of I926 girls, athletics. During the season Danville won ten games and lost seven, scored 176 points to their opponents 152, thus besting them by 24 points. The season was marked by good sportmanship and pep. The following are the first eight: Allene Mills, Captaing Arletta Mills, Josephine Fleming, Elizabeth Johnson, Juanita Lester, Sara Gillespie, Catherine Eason, and Wanda Mills. Other players who came out during the season and who made the first team possible were: Velma Carson, Jennie Reed VVhitc, and Katherine Talley. Seven of the first eight and' all of the first five will return next year. With the same team h Y f A and the exiericnce of this year's playing the prospects are exceedingly bright.
