firfhfaf aiafvurua wie FF' I The Danville High School The Danville High School, as we see it today, came into being in the spring of 1918. At that time Professor I. A. Carnegie was superintendent, and the en- rollment numbered one hundred twenty-eight, with the four-year school plan. The following year Professor Leslie C. Bosley succeeded him. Mr. Herbert Green, principal of the high school, remained as director of the school until 1920. It was during this time that the physics laboratory equipment was installed. In September, 1920, Mr. Lewis A. Piper succeeded Mr. Green as principal. That year, under his direction, a new branch of science, that of chemistry, was started. In the years following, domestic science, biology, and the manual arts departments have been added, each well equipped. In 1921 the Kinetoscope, the school paper, was started, and two years later it became the Danville School News, now continued under the latter name. Attendance increased year by year, and more room was needed, so in 1924 the piece of property adjoining the high school was purchased from the Burley Pool, and a modern and well-arranged building was erected. This building con- tains a large gymnasium, with balcony, the entire seating capacity being about one thousand. There are rooms to accommodate the sixth-grade pupils of the city, and well-equipped classrooms for domestic science, manual arts, music, and commercial departments. The lot back of the school was also secured for playgrounds and is used for football and baseball practice fields and for games. This is the Hrst time that the school has had room enough to have its athletic contests on its own grounds. At present the high school, under the six-year plan, which was introduced by Professor Piper, has an enrollment of almost four hundred, and the graduating class of this year numbers forty, the largest class that has ever been graduated from this high school. The success of the Danville High School has been shown by the fact that a great many of our graduates have made ine records in college. The students have shown ability in the various fields of activity, and some have been outstand- ing. In the school year of 1919-1920, during the principalship of Professor Green, the boys' basket ball team won the State Championship. In 1924 Kathleen Montgomery, of the class of '25, won the State Championship in girls' declama- tion, and Claude Shouse was second in the Courier-jomiial contest. Now comes the happy, yet sad privilege of 'fsigning off. In this little book- E. lg. Sv. Signing GDR' are the records of the high lights of the events and achievements of these six years. Much must be left unsaid, for the highest and brightest of all our lives will remain only in the memories of these, our high school days. Yet in this, the first annual that D. H.
