H. S. SIGNING OFF is respectfully and affectionately dedicated. Three ll . I . fx Four fDwH?fS55WMWVG 1925 if FFM' Enrrmurh For six long, happy years We, of the class of '25, have been broadcasting or registering our personalities in Danville High School. Now comes the happy, yet sad privilege of 'fsigning off. In this little book- E. lg. Sv. Signing GDR' are the records of the high lights of the events and achievements of these six years. Much must be left unsaid, for the highest and brightest of all our lives will remain only in the memories of these, our high school days. Yet in this, the first annual that D. H. S. has ever published, We have endeavored to express the onward spirit that goes ever up to the new, higher, and better ideals of school life. THE ED1ToRs firfhfaf aiafvurua wie FF' I The Danville High School The Danville High School, as we see it today, came into being in the spring of 1918. At that time Professor I. A. Carnegie was superintendent, and the en- rollment numbered one hundred twenty-eight, with the four-year school plan. The following year Professor Leslie C. Bosley succeeded him. Mr. Herbert Green, principal of the high school, remained as director of the school until 1920. It was during this time that the physics laboratory equipment was installed. In September, 1920, Mr. Lewis A. Piper succeeded Mr. Green as principal. That year, under his direction, a new branch of science, that of chemistry, was started. In the years following, domestic science, biology, and the manual arts departments have been added, each well equipped. In 1921 the Kinetoscope, the school paper, was started, and two years later it became the Danville School News, now continued under the latter name. Attendance increased year by year, and more room was needed, so in 1924 the piece of property adjoining the high school was purchased from the Burley Pool, and a modern and well-arranged building was erected. This building con- tains a large gymnasium, with balcony, the entire seating capacity being about one thousand. There are rooms to accommodate the sixth-grade pupils of the city, and well-equipped classrooms for domestic science, manual arts, music, and commercial departments. The lot back of the school was also secured for playgrounds and is used for football and baseball practice fields and for games. This is the Hrst time that the school has had room enough to have its athletic contests on its own grounds. At present the high school, under the six-year plan, which was introduced by Professor Piper, has an enrollment of almost four hundred, and the graduating class of this year numbers forty, the largest class that has ever been graduated from this high school. The success of the Danville High School has been shown by the fact that a great many of our graduates have made ine records in college. The students have shown ability in the various fields of activity, and some have been outstand- ing. In the school year of 1919-1920, during the principalship of Professor Green, the boys' basket ball team won the State Championship. In 1924 Kathleen Montgomery, of the class of '25, won the State Championship in girls' declama- tion, and Claude Shouse was second in the Courier-jomiial contest. If the past is an indication of the future, we can make no estimate of the heights to which old D. H. S. will rise in daysxto come. Board of Eclucatioh OFFICERS MEMBERS Pres1fdentfProf. C. G. PIPER, Principal Danville High School is indeed fortunate to have a man of such keen intellect, energy, sympathy, and integrity as are shown in our principal's every-day life. His highest aspirations have always been for this school. The success of the six- six plan is due to his inliuence, and, also, to him the Wonderful school spirit and sportsmanship is accredited. To us he has become the embodiment of pep, en- thusiasm, and tireless energy. He is loved by all, not only for his ideas, but for his own personality, these making him every pupil's best friend. By his example of right thinking and right living he has inspired the student body with high ideals, the very best spirit of co-operation, and a sense of justice which prevails throughout the school. H E RFORD SOUTHWOOD Senior Honor Student ,................ ....... . .... E LIZABETH FLOYD Class History The year of 1912-13 marks the beginning of the educational climb of a band of about eighty eager students, struggling toward the hilltop of success. Through the passing years, each new teacher gave an inspiration, until now, at last, the summit of the first hill has been reached. This class, gaining and losing, reached the seventh grade with about seventy students, two years' later only about fifty were presentg now the Senior class is a perfect group of forty. Some have entered other schools, some have drifted away. Margaret Fosdick, Robert Fitzpatrick, Isabella Parker, and J. W. Burton chose the more adventuresome path of matrimony. We shall never forget our untiring efforts in the classroom, in the Debating, Science, French, Glee, and Dramatic Clubs. Nor shall we forget the declama- tory contest in which Kathleen Montgomery won a silver loving cup, which will remain in the old school, as will the flag presented by this class, as memories of our presence. In athletics, too, we have played our part. Our girls, Evans, Wray, Wooldridge, Rains, and Durham, and our boys, Delong, Goggin, Ervin, Southwood, and Lester, have proved their mettle in all the Blue and White sports. The Danville School News, published by the Senior Staff, has been a success, and each later edition proved to be better than the previous ones. In social activities our class has done its part. The parties and picnics remain as delightful occasions in our memories. The Junior-Senior banquet of 1924 was a perfect success in. every way, and the pleasures of that evening mingle still in our thoughts with the goodbyes of the Seniors, who from that day could be only visitors in the dear old school thereafter. In spite of tests and examinations and all the perils of high school life, we have come to the closing days of this period of our education. As we reach the top of the hill and glance back into the paths by which we have come here, we drop a silent tear for the old days, and their comradeships. RAYMOND LESTER, Class Htstortan Nmeteen -Ili-Ha 5li5iVlNlE 1 fffvf Class Will We, the class of 1925, in the presence of the attesting witnesses, being of sound mind, here- with draw up and publish this, our last will and testament: To the School Board we leave all the A's that were made during our six years by the Mental Monstrosities to their tender care, as the rarest and most priceless gift we could offer them. To the Faculty we leave the classrooms, what pieces of furniture are left still intact, Mr. Piper's chapel speeches, and the permission to use the same test questions, jokes, and stories on all the following classes. To the Class of 1926 we leave our cellar, otherwise known as the A' Senior Sanctum, our chem- istry experiments, trigonometry problems, Senior privileges, our histrionically-acted Senior play, our hearty repast at the Junior-Senior banquet, and lastly, the annual, with the hope that the end of the year does not End them with nervous prostration over it. Montgomery will lecture on 'Cabbage Culture,' followed by an address on 'The Correct Method of Stringing Beans for Muscle Developmentf by Miss Elsie Southwood. My stars! how twenty years affects one! Last Sunday I listened in and heard a fine sermon by the Rev. Howard L. VanArsdale in Chicago. That was the biggest surprise I have ever had. Could you have conceived of such a thing? just recently I read of the marriage of Elizabeth Floyd to some man-I believe he was a doctor. I hope they have a cook, for they will surely need one, or a divorce will be the result. Men do worship food! Edna, Sara, and Mabel have finished their tenth year of teaching at Broadway. The notorious hobo, Raymond Lester, found mortally wounded from walking so far. Horrors! The John Robinson Circus is making its one hundred and second tour. This year Miss Loraine Alexander is the fat lady, succeeding 'Aunt Eppie'. So much news, and all about my old class- mates! I read in the paper that Curd Snow was a professor at Yale. I was amazed. His greatest achievement in high school was selling advertisements. Andrew was professor at Centre, and through his influence Irene Durham got the position of janitress at Young Hall. She always was devoted to chemistry. Laura Shelby is a kindergarten supervisor in Hollywood, and Irene McMurray is married and owns an orange grove in Florida. Station K. A. K. Mr. Borders, a new member of the faculty, is a graduate and former football star of Transylvania, having received honorable mention by Walter Camp while holding this position of tackle in the Crimson line. He had not been in his new position as coachlong before he was aware that he was not the only new member present. Almost the entire heavy line and backfield of the previous year had been lost by graduation, and in the places of the graduates he found a group of young men, the majority of whom had never been in a scrimmage. The average coach would have been completely discouraged at such an outlook, but not Coach Borders. Instead he set himself to work on the difficult task before him, and very shortly found that although his squad lacked experience, they possessed fighting spirit, courage, and speed, and it was upon these three qualities that he relied for a successful season. After only a few days of steady grilling, the grassy spots began to disappear on the field, and encouraging results were evident in the team. A I . . . . . . ,. .H t ength came their Erst test, their irst game being at Nicholasville with the lX1cholasv1 e eleven. ' Lack of experience and the absence of two regulars from the lineup cost them the game, and their first contest ended in a 19-6 lose. In this game VanArsdale suffered a broken collar bone, and was unable to appear in the Blue Admirals lineup the rest of the season. - Again Coach Borders showed no signs of discouragement. He at once completely revolution- ized his team by placing each man at the position at which he had displayed the greatest ability in the first game. Thus he turned a defeat to his advantage. This new arrangement proved to be more than a success. In the next game with the heavy Model High team, of Lexington, the Admirals ' completely outclassed their visitors in every way, and were easy victors by a 33-0 count. The following Ifriday they again showed their mettle, meeting the strong Lancaster Green Devils and surprising fans and foes by ending the contest in a 13-13 tie. Every man was in the game from start to finish. They showed that they were not yellow, even if they were small. The next game was another win for the Admirals ' over the Springfield eleven by a 21-0 score. This team had tied Lancaster in a game about three weeks before, and everybody was prepared to see the tussle of their lives. The contest was a well-earned victory. The next four games proved to be disastrous to the locals, the first being lost after a hard- fought play in a drizzling rain and on a muddy field. The Admirals' lost to the Somerset grids by a 31-0 score, after holding the Georgetown Buffaloes to a 0-0 tie for the Erst half. They were defeated by a 27-0 count. The third game went to Stanford with a 13-5 count, and the fourth to Harlan byi35-12. Yet, though the season of 1924 came to a close with a record of two wins,.one tie, and four defeats, it can be said to have been a very successful one, considering the material Coach Borders had with which to make his team. The future looks bright and favorable for a 'lcrack team. Only four regulars will be lost by graduat1on, these being: Lester and Ervin, tackles, and Goggin and Delong, half backs. It was one of the most successful ones in our athletic history. Out of eleven scheduled games and three preliminaries contested, only three times did the team, which Mr. Piper so splendidly coached, suffer defeat. The Danville team played-some of the best teams of the State, and at all times displayed the most creditable ability. At the beginning of the season an athletic meeting was called for the purpose of selecting a new name in preference to Blue Demons, the old one, because of its similarity to other high school titles of the State. After several had been put to a vote before the entire student body, the name Blue Admirals was selected almost unanimously. The Blue Admirals completed the prelimi- naries in ine style, defeating Junction City and Houstonville by large odds and besting the Danville High Alumni for the first time in six years.- The first scheduled game of the season was with the Versailles basketeers, who were over- come with little difficulty by a 31-11 score. This victory was followed by the defeat of the Model High prize team from Lexington by a 37-13 count. But at this point the Admirals grew unwisely over-confident, and lost to the next visiting team, the Willisburg quintet, by a close margin, 22-20. This shortcoming served to help rather than to hinder them in their next five contests. Only one change was made in the lineup. Wooldridge was placed at Tucker's standing guard position, and Tucker in turn replaced Wooldridge as forward. This rearrangement strengthened the team by several notches, and the above men- tioned games were won, and in most cases the Admirals were easy victors. They defeated Winchester, who played in the finals of the State Tournament, 29-ll: Lawrenceburg, 33-205 Lebanon, 25-175 Somerset, 26-17, and Rich- mond, 36-20, these teams ranking with the best teams in the State. At this point, although their floor work was fair, their failure to come up to the notch in lo- cating the basket cost them the next two games, the first with Georgetown, and the second with Monticello, their rival for several years. These were lost by 15-9 and 36-16 scores, respectively. fwref zaza - Hfiim., . The final game with the Nicholasville quintet was played on the home floor, and the Ad- mirals 'spurred on to revenge by their defeat at the hands of the visitors' football squad of the season before, defeated them unmercifully with a 38-S score. Thus ended the season of 1924. In summing up the season's markers it is found that the Admirals totaled 385 points, to the opponents 230, a majority of 155. Of these points, May netted 111, Gooch 98, Shearer 86, Tucker 56, Wooldridge 17, Hines 11, and Lawrence 6. This, however, did not end their success They competed in a tournament, which was held in the new high school gymnasium under the management of Mr. B. 1. Perry. The schools represented were: Danville, Somerset, Monti- cello, Stearns, Junction City, Hustonville, and Science Hill, Danville drew Science Hill as their opponent in the first game and scored an easy win over them. ln the following session they gave the Monticello quintet, the winners of the tourna- ment, the fight of their lives before they were able to defeat them by a small margin. The outlook for next yearls team is very en' couraging. Not a man on the team will be lost by graduation. Four of them are Sophomores. All are stars now, and with their present train- ing and that to be added by Professor Piper's coaching of next year, they should take the State Championship with hardly an effort. 2715321111111-2 lk X . Miss Givens, as Coach, began the season with a new team under a new name, this name being chosen in prefer- ence to the Blue Angels, the title of last year. Three of last year's stars having been graduated, their places had to be filled by inexperienced players. This telling loss weakened them consider- ably at first. The first game of the Blue Belles was with one of the strongest teams of the State, the Versailles lassiesg conse- quently, though their floor work equaled the average, they went down to a 27-9 defeat. In the second game they were more successful. They displayed consider- able improvement over their first show- ing and succeeded in overcoming the Burgin quintet by a 15-11 count. The Blue Belles contested with the Hustonville quintet twice, the first time at Hustonville, and the second time on the local fioor, which ended in their besting the visitors. The Blue Belles competed in the Sectional Tournament, drawing an their opponents of the first session, the Junc- tion City girls, and though this team had bested the Harrodsburg team, the Blue Belles succeeded in defeating them by the large margin of 22-4. ffzwfef fffafvuwfzf was FF' I This was followed by a game in the second session with the Science Hill maids fthe Winners of the girls' sectional tournamentj. The Danville team made a fine showing, but lost by a 30-12 score. This ended the season of 1925 girls' athletics. Though not victorious in every game contested, they had, and displayed, as fine a spirit as any girls' team that Danville High School athletics has turned out. Though losers in most cases, they played at all times with as much fairness and pep as if they had Won. This year ends the high school ath- letic career of several of the Blue Belle stars. Those being graduated are: Georgia Wray, who Won an honored po- sition on the all-sectional tournament quintet, as picked by Referee Hanson of the University of Kentuckyg Elsie Evans, Louise Rains, and Ruth Wool- dridge.
