LIFE Life ' s Broncos Our lives have given nightmares we must ride Where hands could grasp no pommel ' s steady- ing wood; No leather cinch secured on bronco ' s hide The saddle ' s strength for rides we understood. Volcanic rage was snorting broken-time And alien flesh was pounding earthquake jolts; Before the ride, we thought that hoofbeats rime, That bucking was a growing-game for colts. Then any bridle on a bronco ' s head Must seem to hold for him inaccurate bit; The reins as routes for power of the mind were dead, Upon such spasmed flesh no thought could fit. We clutched his neck and clung to tossing mane, Were stoned to earth, were bronco-hoofed by pain. POET (Madras, India) QUADERNI DI POESIA (Rome, Italy) STUDENTS Of Solid Song and Tears A veteran of Viet Nam, you come Into my class for meanings I might have; Another source brings word one side is numb. For bullet near the brain I have no salve. Though I am veteran, too, no booby- trap Has left a war ' s half-death for me to face; I only feared the wound, you felt it snap. You seek from possible paralysis a grace. You seek sun-breath for senses in a school; I learned pulse-gift is hung on slender thread, But lack of messages of molecules That sense Damoclean sword swing overhead. Life-beauty? Faith? I would com- municate Some solid song among the tears of Fate. POET (India) All excerts on this page were written by Charles Howe. POETRY Of Images and Balloons He sits On his image; Above him float balloons Of rubber filled with gas; he pulls The strings THE WRITTEN WORD ANTHOLOGY, No. 8 Of Longhand Song Why does my longhand seek so often print? Profound ideas from my fingers wayward trimble; My wrist loops words that totter, merely hint The commonplace of me, I should be humble. . . My hand writes waves that seek to sing in books. AMBER (Nova Scotia, Canada) TIME Splintered Minutes My clock Has splintered ticks. Like cracking heated glass; Unwinding spring or cogs of time Are chipped. INKY TRAILS (Idaho) Of Alphabets and Clocks B.C A.D Jumbled Are alphabets of time; Hours tick from complex clocks, since you Are gone. 1st prize in Cinquain, Haiku, Janka contest of SCIMITAR AND SONG (Maryland)
