This yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Charles Howe, who was a faculty member at Danville Junior College for thirteen years and was yearbook advisor for the same period of time. URANIUM AND KNEELING ELEPHANTS The facts of Charles Howe ' s life: He was born in Whitside County, near Sterl- ing, Illinois, on April 25, 1912. He received his B.A. from the University of Illinois, his M.A. from the University of Southern California, and did graduate work in English at the University of California at Los Angeles. He served with the 116th Anti-aircraft Battalion during World War II, and participated in the D- Day invasion of Normandy. Before coming to Danville Junior College in September of 1962, he taught at high schools in Wyom- ing, Nevada, Michigan, Iowa, and Califor- nia. His name is included in DIRECTORY OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN WRITERS, 1971; PERSONALITIES OF THE WEST AND MIDWEST, 1971, 1973; ILLINOIS LIVES, 1969; OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS, 1973; and the 1976 edition of NOTABLE AMERICANS OF THE BICENTENNIAL ERA. He was a member of a number educational and poetry societies and an officer of three writers ' societies. He published two books - BLACK PANTHER SEARCH, in 1951; and URANIUM AND KNEELING ELEPHANTS, in 1973; plus numerous other poems, short stories, and book reviews in various publications. He died on September 21, 1975, at age 63. The important matters of Charles Howe ' s life: He was a poet, a teacher, and a good friend to colleagues and students alike. He is sadly missed by the Danville Junior College Community. 10
