■ I CHRONICLE VOLUME 14 DANVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE DANVILLE, ILLINOIS DANVILLE JLfNIOR COLLEGE LIBRARY ll This yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Charles Howe, who was a faculty member at Danville Junior College for thirteen years and was yearbook advisor for the same period of time. Photograph Hands in Times darkroom Dip negative in acid, print A flash-bulb moment. URANIUM AND KNEELING ELEPHANTS The facts of Charles Howe ' s life: He was born in Whitside County, near Sterl- ing, Illinois, on April 25, 1912. He received his B.A. from the University of Illinois, his M.A. from the University of Southern California, and did graduate work in English at the University of California at Los Angeles. He served with the 116th Anti-aircraft Battalion during World War II, and participated in the D- Day invasion of Normandy. Before coming to Danville Junior College in September of 1962, he taught at high schools in Wyom- ing, Nevada, Michigan, Iowa, and Califor- nia. His name is included in DIRECTORY OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN WRITERS, 1971; PERSONALITIES OF THE WEST AND MIDWEST, 1971, 1973; ILLINOIS LIVES, 1969; OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS, 1973; and the 1976 edition of NOTABLE AMERICANS OF THE BICENTENNIAL ERA. He was a member of a number educational and poetry societies and an officer of three writers ' societies. He published two books - BLACK PANTHER SEARCH, in 1951; and URANIUM AND KNEELING ELEPHANTS, in 1973; plus numerous other poems, short stories, and book reviews in various publications. He died on September 21, 1975, at age 63. The important matters of Charles Howe ' s life: He was a poet, a teacher, and a good friend to colleagues and students alike. He is sadly missed by the Danville Junior College Community. 10 LIFE Life ' s Broncos Our lives have given nightmares we must ride Where hands could grasp no pommel ' s steady- ing wood; No leather cinch secured on bronco ' s hide The saddle ' s strength for rides we understood. Volcanic rage was snorting broken-time And alien flesh was pounding earthquake jolts; Before the ride, we thought that hoofbeats rime, That bucking was a growing-game for colts. Then any bridle on a bronco ' s head Must seem to hold for him inaccurate bit; The reins as routes for power of the mind were dead, Upon such spasmed flesh no thought could fit. We clutched his neck and clung to tossing mane, Were stoned to earth, were bronco-hoofed by pain. POET (Madras, India) QUADERNI DI POESIA (Rome, Italy) STUDENTS Of Solid Song and Tears A veteran of Viet Nam, you come Into my class for meanings I might have; Another source brings word one side is numb. For bullet near the brain I have no salve. Though I am veteran, too, no booby- trap Has left a war ' s half-death for me to face; I only feared the wound, you felt it snap. You seek from possible paralysis a grace. You seek sun-breath for senses in a school; I learned pulse-gift is hung on slender thread, But lack of messages of molecules That sense Damoclean sword swing overhead. Life-beauty? Faith? I would com- municate Some solid song among the tears of Fate. POET (India) All excerts on this page were written by Charles Howe. POETRY Of Images and Balloons He sits On his image; Above him float balloons Of rubber filled with gas; he pulls The strings THE WRITTEN WORD ANTHOLOGY, No. 8 Of Longhand Song Why does my longhand seek so often print? Profound ideas from my fingers wayward trimble; My wrist loops words that totter, merely hint The commonplace of me, I should be humble. . . My hand writes waves that seek to sing in books. AMBER (Nova Scotia, Canada) TIME Splintered Minutes My clock Has splintered ticks. Like cracking heated glass; Unwinding spring or cogs of time Are chipped. INKY TRAILS (Idaho) Of Alphabets and Clocks B.C A.D Jumbled Are alphabets of time; Hours tick from complex clocks, since you Are gone. 1st prize in Cinquain, Haiku, Janka contest of SCIMITAR AND SONG (Maryland) EDUCATORS 1975 1973 Mrs. Joyce Atchison Mr. John Girton Mr. Charles Howe Mrs. Gladys Moore Mrs. Gladys Ramsey Mr. Maurice Stauder Mr. Richard Trower 1972 Mrs. Jean Bailey Mr. Burton Brackney Mrs. Alice Dries Mr. Robert Griggs Mr. Thomas Kukla Mrs. Maurine Sell Miss Connie Peterson Mr. Richard Cheney Mr. Benny Albin 1974 Mr. Francis Anderson Mr. Dale Fathauer Miss Marjorie Holmes Mrs. Natalie Kalman Miss Barbara Todd 13 RETIRING BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBERS Mr. Thomas W. Achilles sulks; Pascal consults his watch; and true Cordelia — with her just-washed hair, stern-hearted princess, ready to de — fend the meticulous garden of truths in her high-school notebook — uncaps her ballpoint pen. And the corridors drum: give us a flourish, fluorescence of light, for the teachers come, green and seasoned, bearers of the Word, who differ like its letters; there are some so wise their eyes are birdbites; one a mad, grinning gent with a golden tooth, God knows he might be Pan, or the sub — custodian; another is a walking podium, dense with his mystery — high priests and attaches of the ministry; kindly old women, Uke unfashionable water — ing places; and the assuming young, rolled tight as a City umbrella; - thought-salesmen with sample cases, and saints upon whom merely to gaze is like Sunday — their rapt, bright, cat-licked faces I And the freshmen wait; wait bristling, acned, glowing like a brand, or easy, chatting, munching, muscles lax, each in his chosen corner, and in each a chosen corner. Full of certainties and reasons, or uncertainties and reasons, full of reasons as a conch contains the sea, they wait; for the term ' s first bell; for another mismatched wrestle through the year; for a teacher who ' s religious in his art, a wizard of a sort, to call the roll and from mere names cause people to appear. The best look like the swinging door to the opera just before the Marx Brothers break through. The worst — debased, on the back row, as far as one can go from speech — are walls where childish scribbling ' s been erased; are stones to teach. And I am paid to ask them questions: Dare man proceed by need alone? Did Esau like his pottage? Is any heart in order after Belsen? And when one stops to think, I ' ll catch his heel, put scissors to him, excavate his chest! Watch, freshmen, for my words about the past can make you turn your back. I wait to throw, most foul, most foul, the future in your face. —BARRY SPACKS (THE MODERN AGE) FACULTY INSTRUCTORS NOT PICTURED: JOHN BUSBY MARY COFFMAN SUSAN HUGHES RUTH KOENIG TONY ABERNATHY M.A.-DePauw Education FRANCIS ADAMS Adv. FORWARD TO IS 5 If a poet is anybody, he is somebody to whom things made matter very little — somebody who is obsessed by Mak- ing. Like all obsessions, the Making obsession has disadvan- tages; for instance, my only interest in making money would be to make it. Fortunately, however, I should prefer to make almost anything else, including locomotives and roses. It is with roses and locomotives (not to mention acrobats Spring electricity Coney Island the 4th of July the eyes of mice and Niagara Falls) that my poems are competing. They are also competing with each other, with elephants, and with El Greco. e. e. cummings TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN WRITING THE SECRET SITS We dance around in a ring and suppose, But the Secret sits in the middle and knows. — Robert Frost TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN WRITING FIRE AND ICE Some say the world will end in fire. Some say in ice. From what I ' ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. — Robert Frost TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN WRITING (what if a much of a which of a wind) what if a much of a which of a wind gives the truth to summer ' s lie; bloodies with dizzying leaves the sun and yanks immortal stars awry? Blow king to beggar and queen to seem (blow friend to fiend: blow space to time) — when skies are hanged and oceans drowned, the single secret will still be man what if a keen of a lean wind flays screaming hills with sleet and snow: strangles valleys by ropes of thing and stifles forests in white ago? Blow hope to terror; blow seeing to blind (blow pity to envy and soul to mind) — whose hearts are mountains, roots are trees, it ' s they shall cry hello to spring what if a dawn of a doom of a dream bites this universe in two, peels forever out of his grave and sprinkles nowhere with me and you? Blow soon to never and never to twice (blow life to isn ' t: blow death to was) — all nothing ' s only our hugest home; the most who die, the more we live e. e. cummings TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN WRITING 111 Subjects, from left to right: Buddy McGrew, talented imitator of Elvis Presley and a female impersonator Nora Coffman, the most confused subject Liz Herzog, feeling an itch Ruth Tanquary, who at one point thought she was a car Rick Lenover, performer of a surprise strip-tease Anita Winstead, who found herself nude in the middle of the Union  Garrett ' s Captive Audience, above H H . I— I I . Tj ' Herzog Ustening to suggestion from hypnotist ' JL. 1 J 1 Larry Garrett, above :hem spellbound Hypnotist Larry Garrett visited Danville Junior College and some of the students will never be the same. Garrett ' s demonstration of his hypnotic control over twelve volunteers (including several who, like Don Haberkorn and SAC President Tom Morgan, chickened out and left the stage) drew one of the biggest audiences of any first- semester Student Advisory Council sponsored daytime event. As watching students laughed helplessly, subjects on stage ate imaginary ice- cream cones, were pinched by imaginary hands every time they sat down, scrambled on the floor for imaginary money, looked for a treasure hidden in the audience, and itched in secret places in response to hypnotic suggestions. 113 CAMPUS LIGHT The Campus Lighthouse, sponsored by the Christian Student Foundation, has provided many activities to the stu- dent body.
