In so doing, it dedicates this volume to Presi- dent Mary Miller. Although many people played a role in bringing Danville Junior College into being and bringing about its expansion in these 25 years, it is doubtful whether there would be a D. J. C. today had it not been for someone who dedicated a lifetime to its being. That person is President Mary Miller. Danville Junior College began as an extension center for the University of Illinois in the Vet- erans ' Education Program after World War II, in 1946. Through the efforts of Miss Mary Miller it continued after this program was dis- continued. Until June, 1965, Danville Junior College was housed in Danville High School. Through Miss Miller ' s efforts seven buildings and a campus were obtained from the Veterans ' Administration in Washington, D.C. Above Miss Miller speaks at the ceremonies inwhichD.J.C. received the deed to this property-Labor Day, 1966-from Mr. John Gleason, head of Veterans ' Administration in the nation ' s capital. The speaker at these ceremonies was Senator Paul Douglas. 6 STATE JUNIOR COLLEGE CLASS I APPROVAL AND NORTH CENTRAL ACCREDITATION In the spring of 1966 Danville Junior College received its Junior College Class I approval from the state of Illinois. Shown above are Miss Mary Miller and Mr. David Radcliffe, super- intendent of District 118 schools, with mem- bers of the evaluation committee: Mr. Everett Belote, associate secretary of the state junior college board; Mr. Earl Trobaugh from LaSalle- Peru Junior College; and Dr. Jack Peterson, Western Illinois University. In the spring of 1967 Danville Junior College received its North Central Accreditation. In this year, it separated from District 118 and became a separate district, District 507. This year also, after twenty years of service to Danville Junior College, Miss Mary Miller re- ceived the title of President of Danville Junior College. 7 DEED TO BUILDING 17-July 25, 1969 Another dream of President Mary Miller came true when Danville Junior College received the deed for the building that is now Danville Junior College ' s Student Center. It was originally Veterans Administration ' s Building 17. Above, at the deeding ceremonies, Mr. R. Dale Wilson, regional representative for the federal Depart- ment of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW), presents the deed to Mr. Elmer Smith, chair- man of Junior College District 507 (Danville College). Witnessing the presentation are Mr. Marvin A. Chapman, director of the Veterans Administration Hospital; President Mary Miller; and Congressman Leslie C. Arends, Republican from Melvin. 8 PRESIDENT EMERITUS AND ELECT PRESIDENT With the retirement of President Mary Miller at the end of 4)anville Junior College ' s 26th year (announced late in January), come even greater reasons for especially dedicating Volume 10 of the CHRONICLE to President Miller. In accepting President Miller ' s retirement request, the trustees said they will bestow on her the title of President Emeritus , lo act as a consultant complete with secretarial staff. At the recommendation of trustee Elmer Smith, the board declared Miss Miller Danville ' s First Lady of Education and dedicated the next semester at the College to her. President Miller began her career in education in 1926 as an English teacher at Danville High and became chairman of the DHS English department in 1930, serving in that capacity until 1962. She also was head of dramatics at the high school from 1926 until 1961. From 1946 on President Miller has been the initiating force in the founding of Danville Junior College. President Miller is the only woman president of public junior college in Illinois and one of three in the nation. In 1960, she was designated 1 of the 10 outstanding women in Danville. She was secretary -treasurer for the Illinois Association of Junior Colleges (1965-1966), and Danville ' s Woman of the Year in 1965. She was elected Boss of the Year in 1970. She has been president of Illinois Association of Teachers of English, Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Danville Association of Secondary Ed- ucation, and Tri Delta Alumni Association (Uni- versity of Illinois). In 1960-61, she was Regional Director of National Thespian, and has twice served as a delegate to the National Council of Teachers of English. William Langas Since 1951-52, President Miller has appeared in Who ' s Who in American Education. She has also appeared inWho ' s Who in American Women, Who ' s Who in the Midwest, Dictionary of Inter- national Biography, Civic Leaders of America, Illinois Lives, History Under Our Feet, Out- standing Educators of America, Personalities of the West and Midwest. She received Ameri- can Honorarium Citation in 1966 for outstanding contributions to the American community. Miss Miller has published plays for high school - - ' Sno Haven, Murder Walks Among Us, and Re- member the Mayne- - , and articles in Junior Col- lege Journal, The Illinois Teacher, English Journal, and Dramatics. Mr. William J. Langas will become President of Danville Junior College July 1, 1972. Since 1969 he has served as D.J.C. ' s director of faculty and instruction. He graduated from Dan- ville High in 1950 and from Danville Junior College in 1952. He received his bachelor ' s and master ' s degrees from the University of Illinois and has done doctoral work there. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and as a history teacher at Danville High from 1957 to 1965. He taught at Danville Junior College as a part-time teacher from 1957 to 1966. Then, as a full-time instructor, served as chairman of D.J.C. ' s social science department from 1966 to 1969. He has appeared in Outstanding Edu- cators of America (1970), and is a member of the American Association for Higher Education, American Association of Junior Colleges, Com- munity College Social Science Association, Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, and Phi Theta Kappa.
