THE CHRONICLE PREFACE To record and portray the manifold aspects of school life is the primary purpose of a yearbook. We, of the 1966 Chronicle staff, have tried to highlight each event of the school year in order that we might help you recall the ex- citement, the joys, and the sorrows of this past wonderful year. This year was the beginning of a new era as Danville Junior College celebrated simul- taneously its twentieth anniversary and the acquisition of its own campus. To effectively convey the enthusiasm and loyal support of the student body, we have deviated from our traditional colors of green and white and have sub- stituted in their place a brilliant red and silver, symbolizing our heartfelt pleasure for this accomplishment. It is the sincere wish of the entire staff that the Chronicle of 1966 may serve as a pleasant reminder of this eventful year at Danville Junior College. Editor - in - Chief Courtesy Hreha Studio In Memoriam Glen Robertson Danville Junior College faculty and students miss the pleasant smile and warm-hearted personality of Glen Robertson, for many years a part-time instructor in Sociology, History, and Education, and tennis coach. Executive Dean Mary Miller serves D.J.C. birthday cake to Mr. Ronald Eldred, the latest instructor to join the full-time faculty. Miss Mary Diller, the first D.J.C. full-time instructor, holds the anniversary cake. WOMAN OF THE YEAR EXECUTIVE DEAN MARY MILLER OF DANVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE In June, Danville Business and Professional Women ' s Club named Execu- tive Dean Mary Miller Danville ' s Woman of the Year. Dean Miller ' s fame, however, reaches far beyond the confines of Danville. She is listed in many books of Who ' s Who, among them the Dictionary of International Biography . She is the only woman who is dean of a junior college in Illinois and is secre- tary-treasurer of the Illinois Association of Junior Colleges. She has published several plays and articles. She received both her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Illinois but has also earned credit hours at six other universities throughout the United States. Honors she has received in the fields of English and Speech are numerous. Above all these, we think of Dean Miller, for the many things she has done and is doing to give Danville a junior college. MR. JOHN S. GLEASON, JR. VETERANS ADMINISTRATOR Veterans Administrator John S. Geason, Jr. receives the key to Danville from John Nichols, Danville Chamber of Commerce president. In December Veterans Administrator John S. Gleason, Jr., came from Washington, D.C., to Danville to make the V. A. Hospital buildings available for Danville Junior College. He is shown discussing plans with Ralph Swanson, school board presi- dent; L.W. Jaffe, president of the junior college foundation board; and Dr. Otto Schaefer, director of the V.A. Hospital in Danville. FIRST CITIZEN AWARD TO DR. OTTO SCHAEFER Dr. Otto Schaefer, director of the Veterans Administration Hospital, was awarded Danville ' s First Citizen Award by the American Business Club of Danville in grateful acknowledgement for his efforts toward making the V.A. Hospital available for Danville Junior College. Students, faculty, and adminis- tration of D.J.C. add their voices in tribute to Dr. Schaefer. Here Dr. Schaefer is shown receiving the First Citizen Award from Jack Stewart, president of the American Business Club. Superintendent David H. Radcliffe, speaker for the presentation, is shown at the right. cjiiFncaiiM CM (FBI MULi Qicimn mm OFFDE DJC FOmiMlIM m nm WHncrr mima DANVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE FOUNDATION FUND DRIVE CAMPAIGN In March the newly organized Danville Junior College Foundation in- itiated a Fund Drive to raise $750,000 to convert V. N., demonstrating how near the heart the stomach is. The students are William Jennings and Charlene Compton. Above, Norma Hunter takes Pearl Rohour ' s blood pressure in the class on Nursing Principles and Skills. Watching are Sandra Alexander, D.N.; Herma PoUett; and Eileen Ward. Above, the class studies nutrition. They also seem to know about the heart and stomach. Diana Rull puts the skillet on and waiting are Margaret Fazio, Claire Snyder, and Mrs. Hazel LeCount, R.N. Left. Does Adam have a missing rib? In the class on Body Structure and Function Esther Risher, R.N., Gladys Harrigan, and Norma McDowell ponder the question. Classes Dr. Gordon explains the structure of the microscope students Sue Baker, Marlene Lucas, and Glenn Ross. to Watering pfiltzer and mugho pine, Michael Wither and members of the Horticulture classes keep close watch on the progress of their plants. Left to right, Rebecca Anglum, David Patterson, George Bacon, Mrs. Dries, Ron Smith, Edward Collins, Herbert Zimmerman, and Don Hilts. Dr. Gordon instructs students of his Zoology class in the use and functions of the microscope. In this picture with Dr. Gordon are Carol Cleland, Pat Johnson, and Rowena Heath. 30 Classes Mrs. Lightner and Michael Perry discuss a tricky Rhetoric assignment after class. In Horticulture you can commune with nature even while you listen to a lecture. Mr. Nickell illustrates this to his class from left to right, James Frazee, Mike Mayer, Dan Burns, Roy Hoover, Phil Bouslog, and Don Lanmon. From the expressions of Raj ' mond Rose, Bob Noone, and Evelyn Miller, the Rhetoric class is deeply engrossed in Mrs. Lightner ' s lecture. 31 Classes Mr. Wilcox has a formula for everything and he proves it above to Robert Matingly, Robert Moulton, and Fred Bedard, and below to Tom Cohoon, Mike Gony, and Mike Colleen. At this stage of the game the brown fox moves quicker than ten fingers. Oh, well, who wants to type more than five words a minute! Miss Weinard. observes her typing class. All tlie world ' s a stage... J. L. lleaton, Reglna Walker, and Charles Bedlnger seoni almost to be watching some of the roles of men being por- trayed, as Mrs. Morrison takes them back into tiie days of Sliakespeare and the Elizabetlian tlieater. Classes Something unusual here, the teacher, Mrs. Dabelko, is happier about the themes she is returning than are students Marianne Clark, Harold Lowry, and Howard Charles. This is a window; now make a doorway for yourself, says Mr. Davis to Herb Bamhart and Phil Smith in Technical Drawing. 33 Classes The old soldier, Mr. Britton, maps the line of attack, while two P.F.C. ' s in Social Science — Richard Craig and Don Allen — watch his strategy. This is a discussion on political affil- iations? Maybe Miss Diller, Mrs. Lambright, and Mr. Wyer all belong to the same party. O.K.!. This is a football, Mr. Evemeyer says to the P.E. class. Tom Snyder and Larry Kincade ponder this statement. It ' s a game of brawn; get your shoulder muscles to working. Two unknowns demonstrate. In the picture It looks like an apart- ment house for birds, but Mr. Ricliard Theobald Is really demonstrating a 407 control panel in an EDP class. Students are Janet Blair, John Gnaigie, Janice Kimberlln, and Larry Durbin. Classes Above, it ' s new math. The group- ings are — instructor, Mrs. Eileen Farrell; students, Nancy Robinson and Bob Plater. Left, maybe it ' s a demonstration on the Secret Ser ' lce. At least, Steve Gilbert and Brad Pipkin stand staunch and guard with eagle eyes as Mr. Ronald Eldred lectures. 35 Classes Karen Allison is attracted to an X to the fourth power, and it isn ' t even in a letter in code. Mr. Bodine and Robert Haskins listen to her ex- planation in math class. Lorna Doone? Jane Eyre? Stu- dents Kelly Mavres, Evelyn Miller, and Alan Shields visit with Mr. Howe aJDOUt his collection of old McC alls covers de- picting heroines of early English novels. Chronicle photographer, Andy Demos, took this picture when he demonstrated a camera to a speech class. Like a statue poses Sheila Piper. Audience feedback comes from Regina Walker, Marian Wright, Patty Kurzweg, Mike Wright, Bill Lusk, Marty Pluth, Margaret Pierce, and Pat Sheridan. 36 Classes Mr. Zellnsky and Elizabeth Campbell, student li- brarian, demonstrate our first semester library facili- ties. But there will be rainbows of knowledge in vol- umes varied someday soon. I think their national anthem is named after this city, hazards frankophile Thomas Orsulak, while Miss Diffenderfer and Alice Coote check his degree of accuracy. Let ' s see what a 1620 digital computer can do with this decK of cards, Janet Blair wonders. PatStubbe, Frank Hanson, and Mr. Klstler watch with mounting suspense. 37 Classes EDP is fun. You just play cards all day long. Tatar, Bill Barlow, Mary Ellen Meek, and Mr. Bettag. From East to West, More wonderful than science fictionl Now Karen Allison believes. Miss Campbell points the way, and Janice Williams in eagerness awaits. The cycle of communication seems to be complete as Mr. Smith explains a speech situation to John Stewart and Natalie Stuebe. 38 ARNOLD, CHERYL Senate, I, II Chr. of Sp.
