Him teach the Speech. Him coach debate and Play. Him come to school quite late today. Him slow. Though slow, Mr. Hegarty has taught at the High School for the past nine years, and di- rected the Senior Play for the past eight. This year's production, The Teahouse of the August Moon , lived up to the standards set in past years. In addition, Mr. Hegarty has for the past two years taught the controversial Speech II course. But Mr. Hegarty is more than just a teacher: he has been a friend to everyone who has taken the time to know him. The class of '68 thanks Mr. Hegarty for all this: for the Senior Play, for Speech II, but most of all just for being Mr. Hegarty. 5 Appreciation to Mr. Mele Throughout the past three years Mr. Mele has guided the class of '68. Besides teaching Spanish to students of all classes, he has de- voted much of his time and effort to our class and all of its activities. Without his assistance our goals could never have been reached. Be- fore leaving Danvers High School, therefore, the class of '68 gives its sincere appreciation to Mr. Mele for all his help and guidance in these last three years. Yearbook This is our last year at Danvers High School. Some of us are going out to earn our living in the world; others will continue their education in col- lege or trade school. But in years to come all of us will want to remember our years here. This is the purpose of Heritage '68. Though no yearbook can present a total picture of life at school, we hope that this one will help you to remember the experiences of the past four years at Danvers High. We would like to thank the following people for their help; this year- book is due as much to their efforts as to ours: Mr. Delaney, our yearbook counsellor, Mr. John Curran, of the Danvers Herald. Mrs. Saunders, of the Danvers Historical Society, Ed Preston, who supplied us with many fine pictures, Mr. Ginsberg, our official photographer, Mrs. Emerson, and Mr. April and Mr. Parsons. There we formed the friend- ships with those who were to become our future classmates. Uncle Freddie, the forbidden middle stairs, and the grubby worn lunch tickets— these were the Junior High to us. i U i 1 60 The clock marked our progress as, with graduation over, the High School loomed ahead. Apprehensive yet anxious to see what awaited us, we entered High School. Our first oppor- tunity to work together as a class was the Magazine Drive. Show- ing our class spirit, we overtook the upperclassmen and won. The girls felt they belonged to the High School when they were initiated during Freshman-Senior Night. Our Freshman year ended with a sizeable treasury and anticipation for the next year. 61 The clock tolled our progress as the Sophomore year began. Under the leader- ship of president Buddy Holden, vice-president Danny Conley, secretary Jen- nifer Byrne, and treasurer Laurie Kraft, our class again ranked first in the Magazine Drive. The Dew Drop Inn marked our first successful money- raising project and boosted our treasury. Mr. Mele, our class advisor, next guided us through the unusual project of a bottle drive. Chosen from our class as cheerleaders for the coming year were Judy Goodwin, Jennifer Byrne, and Kathy Robertson. The clock ticked on ... 62 The Junior year began with a spirited Rally Dance followed by a cake sale. Barry Shapiro, president, Scott Johnson, vice-president, Jennifer Byrne, secre- tary, and Laurie Kraft, treasurer, organized the school’s first Winter Carnival and Snow Dance. Preceding the Variety Show, the Juniors prepared a delicious Cov- ered Dish Supper. Joining the cheerleaders squad were Denise Green and Marcia Young. Jennifer Byrne and Judy Goodwin became the co-captains. The Junior Prom highlighted our Junior Year. Few will forget the night of the blizzard, April 7, when the gym was transformed into a Hawaiian Paradise” and Karen Ayers was chosen queen. This was a fitting end to our Junior activities. 63 As the clock begins its last hour, we have arrived —Seniors at last! President Scott Johnson, vice-presi- dent Billy Lord, secretary Jennifer Byrne, and treasurer Laurie Kraft organized the activities for the year. A Rally Dance featuring the Monks initiated the Senior year. As queen of the first annual Homecoming Week- end, Judy Goodwin brightened the occasion. The Cov- ered Dish Supper preceded the Senior Play, Teahouse of the August Moon,” which marked another success- ful class venture. With the end in sight, we eagerly await our remaining Senior activities—the Senior Prom, the Class Picnic, the Reception, and finally Gradua- tion. The clock has marked our program as a class, and after graduation, it will look upon future classes. 64 PHOTO BY DANVERS HERALD 65 PAULA ABBOTT is still growing. Although the team out- played their opponents on several occasions, victory was just out of grasp. The team should be congratulated for its never-give-up attitude, even through its bleakest moments. Tri captains Ernie Tremblay, Paul Costello, and Scott Johnson should also be congratulated for showing fine leadership and spirit throughout the season. Ernie Tremblay was chosen most valuable player and presented with the annual Danvers Town Football Memorial Trophy. Ernie was also given a trophy for the best defensive player, while Dan Heart- quist was given a trophy for best offensive player. Good luck to the 1968 squad and may they bring victory back to DHS next year. 94 GREG PRISBY DAN HEARTQUIST ► - § FA ICONS 2 BUD HOLDEN JOHN McCARRON ROGER MOORE TOM BROWN JOHN BORRACCI DAVE MANDARO RON WEBSTER CARL MITCHELL TK.UlHS means FALCONS MS DAN TOOMEY DAN CONLEY BOB KISH VINNIE WATSON MIKE JOHNSON STEVE GUY DANVERS DANVERS DANVERS. This is the best record that the Girl's Field Hockey Team has had for past years. Every game was a team effort, and every win or loss was taken in stride, causing every one to work harder. Remember? 185 Holten Assembly Homecoming Senior Play The Teahouse of the August Moon” ORGANIZATIONS Yearbook Editors Holten Editors The Student Council met at least every Wednesday activity period and worked as a liaison between the stu- dents and the administration. Com- plaints were voiced and action taken. The class of 1968 saw the Student Council present the first Danvers High Homecoming and, of course, the annual Oniontown Varieties. STUDENT COUNCIL HONOR SOCIETY Each year at an assembly the Society inducts new mem- bers. Juniors with an average of 90 and Seniors with an 85 aver- age for all four years are eligi- ble. Officers this year approved an amendment to our chapter’s constitution which deals with fairer membership requirements. At the beginning of the school year, each homeroom elected two students to rep- resent them on the Executive Board. This group worked with the class officers to plan and carry out the class activities. EXECUTIVE BOARD TRIM BAND DANCE BAND ROCK JAZZ Music All of the instrumental groups this year have provided enjoyable music for the Christmas and Spring concerts, the Variety Show and school assemblies. The band members have played at all of the football games, rallies and for- mal concerts. The dance band, which is a much smaller group of musicians, has played for dances and the variety show, providing popular music for many occasions. Rock Jazz, a new group this year, promises to add a new and great sound to an already successful music program. 198 Groups MIXED GLEE CLUB FOLK SWINGERS GIRLS CHOIR BOYS CHOIR FALCONAIRES The music group at D.H.S. presented their annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, which were very en- joyable for all those who attended. Mixed glee club's powerful sound, the girls' choir, boys’ choir, and the Falconaires, all added much to the Christmas and Spring concerts. The Folkswingers with their popular songs sounded especially good this year. The boys’ choir, one of the few in the state, was a hit at all of its appearances. Danvers High School has been for- tunate this year to have such a variety of good music. FRENCH CLUB Language Clubs GERMAN CLUB SPANISH CLUB 200 The purpose of the language dubs is to acquaint the students with the culture and languages of the various countries. These are studied in discussions, artistic films, and field trips. The clubs are under the guidance of the advisors, Mrs. Maney (French Club), Mr. Mele (Spanish Club), Mrs. Chapman (German Club), and Mr. Russell (Russian Club). The club pres- idents are Nancy Couillard of the French Club, James Mac- Donald of the German Club, and Judy Bean of the Russian Club. The major activities of the language clubs this year in- cluded the presentation of El Cid by the Spanish Club, a stirring dramatization of Allouette” by the French Club, a trip to Boston College to see a Russian exhibit by the Russian Club, and a showing of Mrs. Chapman's slides of her trip to Germany. LIBRARY AIDES This is the Future Nurses Club's first year of exis- tence in Danvers High, due to the initiative of Mrs. Conley, the school nurse. The elected officers of the club were: Cindy Story, president, Cheryl Murphy, vice- president, Julie Gosselin, secretary, and Jean Mackey, treasurer. Numerous films, several discussions on the various nursing programs, a presentation by the Dan- vers Red Cross Chapter of the Blood Program, and trips to Essex Aggie, the Blood Center in Boston, and Faulk- ner Hospital School of Nursing have all taught the members a great deal about nursing. The Future Nurses shared their Christmas party with the children from the Hawthorne State School, and are looking forward to their Pizza Party and summer outing. The F.B.L.A. is a chapter of the national organiza- tion for students enrolled in business subjects, spon- sored by the United Business Association, a department of the N.E.A. The development of competent busi- ness leadership, training of character, and encouraging interest and understanding of business occupations are among the aims of the organization. The F.B.L.A. operates a Service Bureau for the school, whereby the members perform typing, duplicat- ing, and clerical tasks for faculty members. Through this project the members receive valuable experience while providing needed service for the school. The Distributive Education program is now in its second year at Danvers High. We are in state and national competition for scholarships and awards throughout the year. We have had several fund-raising activities and educational field trips. GIRLS RECREATION ASSOCIATION STUDENT LEADERS MATH TEAM This year's Math Team had an excellent record with three second places and two thirds. With the help of the senior members Mary Cohane, Paul Hooper, and Laurie Kraft they were able to place second in the regional league. DEBATING This year as in the past the D.H.S. Debating Team remained near the top of the North Shore League. The topic this year concerned control of crime. Seniors on the team included Eileen Gallagher, Richard Green- berg, Sandy Linehan, Faith Durgan, and Ed Berkeley. This year we finished in third place with eleven wins and nine losses. 203 PLAY CAST Show Business The auditorium was turned into Okinawa as the bungling army of occupation was presented in The Teahouse of the August Moon on November 17, 18, and 19. Snow fell outside while a warm and sparkling performance occured within. Our geisha girl, Linda, joined with Richard, Mo, F.d, and Jim to highlight the cast's production. PLAY COMMITTEE The success of this year's play was due as much to the efforts of the play committee as it was to the actors. Their help with the lighting, makeup, props, tickets, and publicity was a great help in the production of the play. The Oniontown Varieties, under the direction of Mr. Ta- tarunis, provided three very successful nights of entertain- ment on March 1, 2, and 3. Dancing, singing, comedy and slapstick proved very enjoy- able to both the actors and the audiences. Mr. T's per- fectionism combined with the efforts of the band, the sing- ers, dancers, and all the others who helped, made the show very smooth-running and quite professional. Marilyn Roaf supervised the decorations, choosing the theme Reflections.” The banquet was held for four main reasons: to bring the class together, to dedicate and present the yearbooks, to give out class pictures, and to present the class’s gift to the school. Moe welcomed everyone to the banquet, and Dr. Miller said grace. After we had eaten our fill of turkey the program began, hirst on the agenda were congratulations and advice from Dr. Miller and Mr. April. This was followed by Scott Johnsons presentation of a microfilm projector to the school as the class’s gift. The climax of the evening was the dedication of the yearbook to a very surprised Mr. Hegarty. Complying with the chants of Speech, speech! Mr. Hegarty said a few words. The evening was concluded with the reading of the will by Sandy Linehan and the distribution of the yearbooks and class pictures. Ii ■« Thursday - Graduation On a clear, warm Thursday night, the class of 1968 graduated from Danvers High School. 323 students received diplomas from Dr. Miller and Mr. April. Laurie Kraft, Mary Cohane, and Paul Hooper addressed the class and 2,000 spectators on the subject of peace. Mr. April announced the recipients of awards and scholarships. The class marched out looking forward to their last function as Danvers High School Seniors, the reception.
