FERN KAVEN Secretary ARLENE GOLDHAMMER Secretary STAFF This year we added two new additions to our school staff. Fern Kaven became the second school secretary, and Mary Lou Smith became our full- time nurse. Both the custodians and bus drivers were kept busy with all the snows we had. Loren and Elmer had to shovel the sidewalks while the bus drivers had to venture out into the snow and cold to pick the students up. Our cooks, Jeanette and Rita, have added some new foods to make the menu more attractive.Arlene Goldhammer is still doing the fine work she has been doing for the past years. 9 MARY LOU SMITH Health School Nurse ADMINISTRATION AND SECRETARY: N. Falconer, Prin- cipal; D. Raddatz, Superintendent; Anne Malacek, Secretary. STUDENT TEACHER: M. Dykstra took over Mr. Schramm's position and taught ty- ping, bookkeeping, shorthand and bus- iness machines. STUDENT TEACHER: Teaching for Mr. Satovich was G. Lohmeyer. He instructed his students in science, chemistry, and physics. STUDENT TEACHERS On March 7th and 8th the administra- tion and a few selected students ex- changed places. A school board, elected by the student body, organ- izied Student Government Days and selected the teachers through appli- ciations. Every position was filled. The students who filled the teaching and other positions gained many bene- fits from the two days. It helped many to decide if a profession in teaching was what they really wanted and if they were qualified for that field. STUDENT TEACHER: K.Frank taught English and physical education. She replaced Mrs. Messina. 10 SENIORS PAUL BROUWER PHILIP BROUWER LINDA BULTHUIS LARK CARLSON SENIORS MARSHA DYKSTRA 12 NOiaiAN FALCONER RICHARD FRANK SENIORS LARRY GUNDERSON KATHLEEN FRANK DOROTHY HOUDEK DANIEL HOTOVEC MAVIS KNOLL JUDITH KOHOUT SENIORS GLORIA KUESTER DIANE KOHOUT MIKE LIPPERT ANNE MALECEK SENIORS GARY LOHMEYER WALLACE LUNDQUIST DORENE LALIM STANLEY MALECEK m 4 1 A J f “1 k A - V 1 z MARY JEAN NORMAN STEVEN RFFSLAND SENIORS WILLIAM SCHAFER DARYL RADDATZ NANCY SCHENDEL 17 KENNETH SEVERSON SENIORS CHARLES SCHROEDER VICTORIA SCHROEDER DENNIS SLAGTER IRVIN SCHOELKOPH DOUGLAS SWOBODA THOMAS VAN BUREN MARY ANN WERTISH ROSE ANN WERTISH SENIORS LINDA SUNDIN SENIOR ACTIVITIES BROUWER, PAUL Basketball 1,2,3,4; Track 3; Sr. Play; Annual Staff 4. CLASS MOTTO: Today We Fol- low, Tomorrow We Lead. CLASS COLORS: Blue and White. CLASS OFFICERS: William Schafer, President; Phyllis Negen, Vice-President; Anne Malacek, Secretary; Daryl Raddatz, Treasurer. We, the Class of 1967, would like to thank our advisors, Mrs. Bottge, Mr. Schramm, and Mr. Kane, for all the help and guidance they qave us. For it was their direction and advice that made our senior class play such a success and led us to accomplishing our dream of going on our class trip out to Washington D.C. Although we cut out many of our money - making pro- jects, we still had the carnival and concession stand. Also, we would like to express our gratitude to the administration and all our teachers who helped us attain our goal of gradua- tion and persuaded us to go on to college. 21 The lighting crew from Senior Class Play. HOMECOMING DANCE The 1966 Homecoming festivities began on October 3, 1966, with the float building. On October 6, the Homecoming supper was held at the Danube school cafeteria. A delicious meal of mashed potatoes and beef gravy, corn, and pie was served. At 8:00 that evening, the coronation ceremonies began. The high school band provided the musical entertainment, and speeches were made by the football coaches and tri- captains. The highlight of the evening was when C. Mueller, old queen, crowned N. Schendel as the new 1966-1967 queen. At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, the annual parade began. Many entries were submitted, and it was a very hard decision for the judges to select a winner from among all the beautiful floats. At 8:00 that night, the football team took on the Sacred Heart Vikings. It proved to be very victor- ious for us as we downed our apponents by a score of 47-13. Later that night, the dance was held in the high school auditorium. Three Coins In a Fountain was the theme of the beautifully decorated gym. Everyone immensely enjoyed the dance and is looking forward to next year's festivities. 33 The seniors lovely float, LOCK UP A VICTORY won first prize in the senior high division for the fourth consecutive year. STAMP ON A VICTORY was the name of the freshmen's clever float. The junior's unusual float was entitled KING OF VICTORY. PARADE The eighth graders used as their theme MOW 'EM DOWN. The Danube High School band is marching down main street during the Homecoming Parade. OUR STARS SPELL VICTORY was the slogan of the sophomores' float. 34 The seventh grade's beautiful float, DEBEARD THE VIKINGS won first prize in the junior high division. ROW I, Front L. to R.: N. The cast of FINDERS KEEPERS : L. to R.: V.Machacek, B.Schafer, D.Sundin. The Darkest Hour , under the direction of Mr. Schramm, provided much suspense and excitement for the audience. The play tells of an innocent young man who has been sentenced to die. He is reprieved during the last hour before his execution by his fiance who has been gathering information for some time. Finders Keepers is the story of a dishonest wife, an honest husband, and a neighbor who has lost some money. The wife finds four hundred dollars and refuses to make any attempt to return it. A neighbor comes to the house and tells the sad story of her lost handbag with a large amount of money in it. In the end the money is returned, but not before the husband and wife have a bitter quarrel. The play was directed by Mrs. Larson. The Game of Chess is the story of a Russian noble and an assassination attempt on his life. A revolutionary comes to kill him so the noble matches wits with him. He comes out ahead, and at the end of the play the revolutionary is dead. This play was also directed by Mrs. Larson. 38 DECLAM WINNERS, L. to R.: P. Negen, L. Sundin, V. Machacek, L. Hoekstra, D. Lalim, D. Sundin. R. Mattke, L. Gunderson, M. Norman. DECLAM Out of the twenty-five students who tried out for declam, these thirteen were chosen to represent Danube at the District Declam Contest. Although none of them received superior ratings or advanced to the region, each person did his best and put in a good showing for his school. If as many students show an interest in declam next year, we are sure to have many individual award winners. T. Van Buren's district declam contest entry was a serious interpretation of The Unknown Soldier Medi tates. What I Can Do For My Country, was the title of V.Schroeder' s original oratory. Humorous interpretations were given by C. Kozubik, I Sell A Dog, and L. Carlson, The Widow's Mi tes. GIRL STATE, BOY STATE, AND COUNTY DAY REPRESENTATIVES, L. to R.: N. Schendel, B. Goldhammer, V. Machacek, D. Mellema, B. Keehl, D. Mattson. ANTHOLOGY WINNERS: ROW I, Front L. to R.: P. Negen, D. Lalim. ROW II: L. Sundin, B. Schafer, M. Norman. DAR AND BETTY CROCKER HOMEMAKER: M. Dykstra. AWARDS This year, many Danube Students entered various contests. Whether for English, Social, or Home Economics classes, all the students tried their best to be a winner. Most of the contests were essay or poetry contests, but a few of them were multiple choice on foreign affairs and general knowledge of home economics. All students cannot be winners, and these that did win are truly outstanding and deserve our praise and hearty congratulations. We hope that next year will be just as profitable in this field for Danube High School students. TIME AND NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS: M. Lippert and B. Schafer. FOOTBALL Although we were not a threat to most of the teams in the conference, we tried our very best to make the Danube students proud of us. We did not get off to a very sizzling start, but our moral was uplifted after our decisive victory over Sacred Heart for our Homecoming game. We rallied at the finish to win a fairly good record. Most of us were relatively inexperienced, but we hope to do better. If we have the support of the Danube High School students, we are sure to have a better record. K. Although it was a very exciting and hard fought game, we just could not surpass the Hector five and finally lost the game in a double overtime. This one defeat did not stop us from winning the rest of our games as our overall record was 17-1. We were dreaded by all our opponents, and now that many of us will be moving up and combining with the A team players, we will be feared even more. We are going to continue to work hard and always do our best so that we can reach our goal of playing in the State Basketball Tournament. 45 B B ACTION In an action and tension packed game, D. Slagter, number 23 from Danube, blocked R. Anderson's deadly jump shot. STARTING FIVE: N. Schendel, guard; K. Severson, forward; R.Mattke (shooting), center; B. Gort for- ward; and D. Slagter, guard. N. Schendel, number 25 from Danube, eagerly awaits the ball. 46 Although we did not receive a high rating during pre-season activities, we really put on a good show and surprised many of our critics. We were called the spoilers by our opponents as we spoiled the near perfect records of Hector and Ren- ville, the co-champions of our con- ference. We earned undisputed second place with a 15-3 record. We were seeded fifth in 212 District for tournaments, but we pulled an upset by beating Hutchinson 54-52. In the second tournament game we fell, after a hard fight, to Ren- ville by eight points. The final score was 68-60. Surrounded by opponents, K. Severson successfully executes a ballet shot. The duties of a student assistant consist of checking out or in books and other library materials, shelving books, helping to mend books, and assisting pupils who need help in using reference material in the library. The rewards which they receive are: training for future jobs, gaining knowledge about books and the library, establishing good work habits, and learning to work with other people. CLASS TRIP The senior class trip began on a rather unhappy note when the train arrived in Danube more than two hours late on April 17, 1967. This unfortunate occurence caused a long delay on the entire trip to Washington. In Chicago the class received an unexpected tour of the city during a two hour delay. The entire class seemed to be impressed by the grandeur of the city of Washington. During its stay there, the class visited the Archives Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Wax Museum, White House, and the Capitol. Wednesday the class also took a cruise down the Potomac River to an amusement park. Thursday saw the class traveling out of the city of Washington to visit Arlington National Cemetery, Alexandria, and Mt. Vernon. Everyone was sad to see the trip come to an end. At 4:30 the class boarded the train to begin the trip home. fhe entire trip was very interesting and exciting for the entire class. The freshman shop class is busy working on one of its projects. Mr.Skretvedt supervises the operation of the drill press. The advanced math class is concentrating on a difficult math problem Mr. Strissel has given them. STUDENT ACTION We, the students of Danube High School, have been very active this year. All of us are taking at least five academic subjects and most of us are participating in at least one, and many in four or five extra- curricular activities. As you can see by the pictures, we concentrate so hard. On the fun side, we try very hard to think of tricks and jokes to play on our teachers and fellow- students. Such things as moving lockers, writing on tennis shoes, planting ’'evidence , and throwing snowballs are just a few of the things we did. Mrs. Messina is helping one of her classes by explaining grammar to it. The sophomore physical science class tries out a new experiment. The junior history class is working hard on one of Mr. Svoboda’s detailed assignments. STUDENT ACTION Mr. Beihoffer's eighth grade history class seems to be pre-occupied with something in the back of the room. Busy working on the school's new machines, are the students of the Shorthand II class. Mrs. Fuller's freshmen home economics class is busy sewing dresses. 75 Mr. Beihoffer points out Red China to his seventh grade history students. Miss Butler helps D. Schneidernwii and P. Solheim with their grammar lessons. Miss Wishart, practice teacher from Mankato State College, shows her senior art students how to make creative ink pictures. Mr. Svoboda gives his students another one of ’’those assignments he is known for. TEACHER ACTION Once again the teachers at Danube High School put in a very active year.
