Here Veva Kemnitz, vice president, and Lois Poortvliet, secre- tary-treasurer, have paused for a minute to gaze at President Mary Gens's ring. Miss Schmitz and Mr. Liesch are the junior class advisors. The juniors won first place with both their homecoming float and skit this past fall, in the senior high division. The Junior class also started raising money for their senior class trip by selling candy and by presenting a play, under the direc- tion of Mr. Liesch. ROW I: C. Raddatz, M. Frank, D. Dragt, C. Vice President, and Phillip Smed- stad, President are confirming a date set for their class bowling party with Principal, Mr. Orr. Mrs. Llesch and Mr. Black are advisors for this class. The sophomore class made an attractive float for the homecoming parade, using the theme, We're in Tune to Win . The sophomore's decided to send personal donations to a hospital this year in- stead of trading names within their class. ROW I: C. Schafer, H. Fischer, A. Kaiser, M. Frank, T. Leidheiser, D. Molenaar, M. Sommers, L. Gens. GRADE NINE President Trudy Leidheiser's bus must have been late, but Carol Moje, secre- tary-treasurer; and Bruce Schendel, vice- president decided to wait and escort her to the freshmen class meeting anyway. The freshmen, along with their advisors, Mr. Erickson and Mr. Svoboda, made a winning float with the theme, We're the Combination to Win . Besides being busy with their extra-curricular act- ivities, many freshman were also active in their separate classes with many on the 90 Club. ROW I; C. Braun, B. Refsland, D. Bratach, G. Woltjer, L. Maurice, L. Bruns, E. Ruud, B. Woltjer, J. Houdek, C. Schemnel, L. Brouwer, J. Penke, H. Poortvllet. ROW II: D. Hoekstra, J. Sommers, D. Schneiderman, B. Grosklags, C. Vogt, L. Schrupp. GRADE EIGHT As president Preston Mattke rounded the corner, he found his fellow eighth grade officers, Nancy Connelly, secretary- treasurer and Cheryl Mueller, vice president. They seemed to be all tuck- ered out. Some of the reasons they and the other members of the eighth grade gave were because they worked so hard on their homecoming float, studied so hard in their classes, and the fact that many participated in the Junior and Senior High Bands. They did admit, however, that their class advisors, Mrs. Messina and Mr. Steinman , did give them help. ROW Is R. Van Buren, B. Gort, M. Falconer, E. Schafer, G. Kuester, M. Dykstra, G. Malecek, E. SEVENTH GRADE Standing outside of Mr. Orr's office, are the seventh grade officers, Roger Manthei, treasurer; Linda Bulthuis, «c- retary; Billy Schafer, vice president; and Nancy Schendel, president. Although they only entered Junior High this past fall, they have taken active participat- ion in band, homecoming festivities, class parties, and the 90 Club. This year under the guidance of Mr. Emerson, and Mr. Kramer, they chose to go roller skating for their class party. 3 ORGANIZATIONS Carnival Committee: Mr. Orr, Advisor, Charlotte Stellmacher. LIBRARY CLUB A very important aspect of any school system is the library. The student lib- rarian acts a s an assistant to the lib- rarian by mending books, putting away the books, and helping the other stu- dents to find reference material and other information. Each member of the club, to earn an award, must have helped in the library for one hour a week for at least two years. ROW I: Mr. Orr, S. Kiasner, J. Schrupp, B. Gudmunson, C. Stellmacher, D. Dragt. ROW II: A. Wertiah, B. Schroeder, R. Manthey, V. Kemnitz. ANNUAL STAFF Dlacuaslng their sale8 campaign are the buaineaa managers, Bonnie Schroeder, Du- Wayne Dragt, and Veva Kemnitz. These people also encouraged the advertisers to advertise in our annual. Without this added financial support, the Falcon could not be published. Judy Schrupp, editor, and Robert Manthey, assistant editor, smile when they see that their deadlines are a long way off. Seated: Mrs. Liesch. ROW I: S. Schroeder, A. Poortvliet, L. B. Gudmunson, K. Poortvliet, A. Wertish, Schnickels, Manthey, P. HAWKS STAFF Mrs. Liesch, the Hawk's staff advisor, and Karen Manthei do a lot of hard work on each issue of the paper before it comes out each month. It is the duty of the editors to get their news in on time so that the typists can meet their deadline. Our machine operators have the messy job of printing the paper each month. Because of the co-operation of the members of the Hawk's staff, I'm sure we all will agree we have a very fine and inter- esting paper each month. The editor, Karen Manthei, and her assistant, Judy Zuidema, must get all the news and extra material placed in order before any other staff members can start. ROW I: M. Maurice, R. Houdek, D. Serbus, P. Dykema, B. Gudmunson, L. Bratsch, J. Schrupp, I. Weigel, V. Kemnitz, D. Lohmeyer. ROW II: J. Penke, E. Fischer, C. Seehusen, S. Braun, C. Lippert, L. Ruter, K. ManChei, C. The Girls Athletic Association is a combination athletic organization and pep club. The girls par- ticipate in such activities as bowling, toboggan- ing, and folk dancing. As active members of the G.A.A., each girl should attend all G.A.A. spon - sored activities, support the team at athletic con- tests, and exhibit good sportsmanship. All these attribute to the earning of an award in their senior year. ROW I: L. Freiborg, J. Zenk, G. Kopel, V. Schwartz, G. Hoffman, G. Hotovec, Mr. Heller. ROW II: M. Schroer, G. Seehusen, C. All boys interested in farming as a future vocation or profession are members of the Future Farmers of America. Mr. Heller, the advisor, teaches the members improved methods of farming, crop rotation and raising livestock. In 1961, the F. F. A. Chapter of Danube received a superior rating at the National Convention held at Kansas City for activities performed during the year. Those who attended were: Gary Hoffman, Vernon Schwartz, Jim Zenk, Dennis Kohout, and Jim Knoll. This year president Vernon Schwartz received the Star Farmer award and represented our region at the state speak- ing contest. ROW Is Mr. Black, G. Hotovec, E. Kohls, G. Kopel, M. Gort, D. Dragt, G. Hoffman, B. Bruggers, J. Prodoehl. ROW II: J. Bruggers, M. Manthei, N. Dykema, B. Olson, L. Lueck, S. Manthei, S. Schrupp, G. Minkel, L. Fischer, L. Mueller. ROW III: V. Schwartz, J. Roelofs, J. Malecek, R. Schrupp, M. Kurtz, E. Mellema, B. Manthei, J. Van Den Einde, K. Johnson, G. Schafer. To become a member of this athletic organization, one must participate one year in a sport. In order to earn a letter, the members of the D Club must have put in the following amount of required participation: Football - 9 minutes per year Basketball - 10 quarters per year Baseball - 9 innings per year Track - 3 points per year Last fall the members of the D Club collected material for our Homecoming bonf ire. CHORUS Under the capable direction of Mr. Solhelm, our chorus has provided for us son very beautiful music. At Christmas time they, along with the band and a number of small groups, gave a concert that was enjoyed by all. They also gave a beautiful Spring Concert. After putting in many long hours of practice they have proven to be one of the best choruses to come from Danube. Accompanists for the chorus were Judy Zuidema and Mary Roelofs. This year, the band gave a wonderful concert at Christmas time. m Top to bottom: La Vonne Bratsch, Judy Schrupp, Sharon Kiaaner, Anita Wer- tish, Karen Manthei, Charlotte Stellmachev. The National Honor Society has been maintained by the National Asso- ciation of Secondary-School Principals. This Society was established not only as a professional organization but also as a service to schools and students. The number of chapters, which have become an outgrowth of the first chapter granted in 1921, has grown steadily. Today there are more than fifty-three hundred senior chapters and nine hundred junior chapters in the best senior and junior high schools in this country. To pursue its objectives, the National Honor Society has encouraged the establishment of chapters in secondary schools. These local chapters have as their members, students who are outstanding in Scholarship, Leader- ship, Service, and Character. The candidates are chosen by the faculty or by appointed members of the faculty. i The Royal Court: 1960 Homecoming Queen, N. Kaiser; Senior attendants, L. Bratsch J. Schrupp, B. Schroeder, A. Poortvliet; Junior attendant, P. Dyketna; Sophomore attendant, M. Frank; and Junior High attendant, T, Leidheiser. Alumni Trio: Joann Dam- hof, Kathleen Tepfer, and Kathryn Bruggers. HOMECOMING Senior Attendants: LaVonne Bratsch, Judy Schrupp, Bonnie Schroeder, Alda Poortvliet and Queen Nancy Kaiser. The. theme Once In A Blue Moon furnished an attractive setting for the Homecoming dance. Here we see pictured several members of the Royal Court and their escorts lead- ing the Grand March. D.H.S. - King of Victory was the theme used by the seniors for their float. The huge crown represented their hopes for a Homecoming Victory. The huge tape recorder with the theme Record a Victory was the junior's float which won first prize in the senior high division. This beautiful paper napkin piano was the sophomore float. They used the caption We're in Tune to Win. PARADE Riding the seventh grade float is husky Danny Hotovec. To urge the team on to victory, they used the theme Scratch out the Bulldogs. A real winner! The freshman float with the theme We've the Combin- ation to Win won first place in the junior high division. Pounding out a victory for the Danube Hawks is Mrs. Hoaglund's fourth grade. leading the parade as well as the band are our attractive majorettes: Carolyn Hoffman, Trudy Leidheiser, La Vonne Bratsch, and Connie Schemmel. Opening the Homecoming Festivities was the Coronation. The winning skit of the Homecoming Coronation was presented by the junior class. Coach Lueck is giving last min- ute instructions to his Danube team. Rough and tough football was the order of the evening when the Hector Bulldogs challenged the Danube Hawks in the Home- coming game. Here we see J. Roelofs and M. Gort assisting in tackling a Bulldog. That must have been a rather insult- ing remark made to have Mike Gatt fleeing from the clutches of Gary Hotovec. This skit was performed by the seniors at the Homecoming Coronation. Due to the excellent job of tackling, this potential Hector player was prevent- ed from scoring. scac The cast of You Can't Take It With You : V. Schwartz, B. Bruggers, B. Gud- munson, G. Hoffman, K. He, the class of 1962, found that grad- uation on May 29, 1962, came upon us soon- er than ve thought possible. As we march- ed into the auditorium, we had mixed feel- ings of excitement, happiness, and regret. We thought back over our twelve years of memories and knowlege, of friends, «■ perlences, and of growing up. We thought of the security awaiting the underclassmen and of the unknown experiences awaiting each of us as we graduate. We knew that we had now established a basis for life, thanks to our parents, frelnds, teachers, and God. With our heads held erect, we graduated proud, happy, and ready for our future.
