The laughter and tears that were part of the struggle to become an adult - con- quering problems that made life more complicated, peace more difficult and the human heart more troubled...... The crisp fall air blending with bonfire smoke or the shriek of football fans near the field..... Young men and women, hand in hand, building dreams and plans for the future........ A desk lamp burning at midnight, a student absorbed in an open book....... The brown desks, the blackboards, ail lending dignity to the classroom...... The snow falling on the shoulders of the boy and girl walking home from school,. The distinction, dignity and subtle humor of the teachers....... The grass laden with the morning dew being trampled by loafers and tennis shoes proceeding to the first class...... The melting pot of boys and girls finding new friends. Interest and education... The proud parents In their finest array watching their son or daughter in cap and gown receive a diploma..... Yes, all these things and many more I'll remember about our great school....... ROSELAND COOK (below): Rose Brouwer Looking over the Curtis Magazine Plan a e our senior class officers, Ruth Gunderson, secretary-treasurer; Eugene Lundquist, president and Janice Damhof, vice president. These officers have also played a large part in getting us, the 1961 seniors, to Washington D. C. We, your classmates, can never express our graditude for all the work you have done to help make our class a successful one. Again this year, the seniors had the duty of decorating the gym for homecom- ing. The theme of our donee was Sayo- nara . Everyone put in long hours to make our gym and float a big success. CLASS MOTTO: Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you. CLASS COLORS: Lavender and Whi te CLASS FLOWER: Yellow Rose Again this year, the seniors had as their goal, the trip to Washington O.C. Many projects were sponsored to help make this trip a reality; some of these projects were: bake sales, magazine and card sales, class play, game concession stands, and sock hops. Throughout all of these projects we have had the backing of both the Danube and Roseland communities; because of this, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who helped make our trip to Washington D.C. possible. We, the 1961 graduating class, wish to thank our advisor, Mr. Orr, for the help and guidance he extended to us during the past year. We also wish to thank Mr. Polssant and all those who helped make our senior year a memorable one. Graduation on May 29 will come too soon for all of us. We leave the cherished halls of D.H.S. with a feeling of regret, but we look forward to the future with anticipation and hope of find- ing what life holds for each of us. Bob Bruggers, president, is assisting LaVonne Bratsch, secretary, in getting a drink. Looks like Larry Mueller, vice president, is helping LaVonne get her face washed. The juniors, like all past classes when they received their class rings, were very happy and proud the day their rings arrived. The juniors, along with their advi- sors, Miss Schmitz and Mr. Liesch, work- ed vigorously to help make their junior year something special. Not pictured is Vernon Schwartz, treasurer. To enable the librarian to use her time to help students find information as well as to make our library one of the best, the members of the Library Club assist with such routine work as putting away, checking, and mending books, typing cards, and the other innumerable tasks required. In order to win an award, each member of the club must have helped in the library one hour per week for at least two years. ROW I: Mrs. Messina, P. Grafenstein, J. Penke, R. Houdek, D. Serbus, E. CHEERLEADERS Taking it easy are the Danube A Team cheerleaders, Mary Jane Sch- nickels, Judy Schrupp, Nancy Kaiser, and Patty Dykema. The cheerleaders this year worked «any hours on their yells to get them perfected. A special thanks is extended to the student body who helped us to support the Hawks In both the football and basketball seasons. New outfits were bought for both the foot- ball and basketball seasons this year. Foot- ball cheering uniforms consist of maroon slacks and a white sweatshirt with a maroon letter. Their basketball uniforms were maroon sweaters, white letters, and white pleated culottes. The old A Team uniforms are be- ing used by the B Team cheerleaders. This year the cheerleaders were able to cheer for their team through out the region and two games of the State Tournament. This was a big thrill for all of these girls. Patty Dykema, Mary Jane Schnickels, Judy Schrupp, and Nancy Kaiser, are up in the air about getting an- other point for the Danube Hawks. On March 18, the Hawks were playing the game which would decide whether they would enter the State Tournaments. The game was played against Montevideo, and the Hawks won 68 - 55. The Hawks lost their first game irt the State Tournaments to Duluth Central, who later became the State Champions. All fans of the Hawks backed them throughout the season and tournaments.
