S3IUALIDV The new Homecoming Queen, Dorothy Jahnke, is shown here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Jahnke. Co-captains Ron Mueller and Bob Wi gen are placing the traditional home- coming robe on Dorothy Jahnke, 1958-59 Homecoming Queen. LaVonne Hoekstra gives her approval of the friendly gesture. Admirinq our new queen, Dorothy Jahnke, are: Jeanette Reek, Nancy Kaiser, Avis Kurtz, Lois Poortvliet, Carole Kopel, and Ruth Zaske. Waiting for the selection of a new queen are the queen candidates and their attend- ants. Returning to crown the lucky girl was LaVonne Hoekstra who represented last years Homecoming Queen, Miss Leona Kots. At the bonfire the cheerleaders were to put the crowd in an enthusias- tic spirit for the homecoming football game. The alumni trio entertained those who attended the convocation by sing- ing A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody . «rn Helping to guide the senior float 'Ve'11 Win is the theme of the are David Schrupp and Dan Kopel. The sophomore float, big ship was transported by a car. These eighth grade lovelies are hold- ing a large sucker. The eighth grade theme was Lick'em . This beautiful float, the freshman float, had the theme Step to Victory . The seventh grade had the winning float in the junior high division. Their theme was Beat the Panthers . The G.A.A. float won the organiza- tions' division. On the F.F.A. float are Phyllis Grafenstein, the F.F.A. sweetheart and Bob Van Den Einde, the reporter. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Mr. HaIIiday and part of the sopho- more class are engrossed in an interest- ing English lesson. Don't overlook that quotation on the board—it's a lesson in i tself. Yes, complete sentence always has a subject and a verb. This is what Mrs. Poissant is telling two of her students. Literature makes English class interest- ing, too. The speech class, under Mrs. Bottges' direction, seems to be quite absorbed in Jeanette Reek’s speech. Learning the correct method of giving a speech is only a part of this class's work. Alda Poortvliet, Marlys Schack and Elmyra Zuidema are being shown how to use the card catalog by Mrs. Bottge, the librarian. This system enables the student to find information about vari- ous books easily. An interesting discussion of current affairs is under way in the senior social class. Just what will happen in Berlin is a timely question. Social is taught by Mr. Haiti day. One of the physics classes is listen- ing to a lesson on sound. Considering the skeptical looks of the girls, the new chapter must be difficult. Just what was the Dred Scott Deci- sion? is the question Mr. Svoboda is asking the seventh grade history class. The seventh graders are discussing their current chapter in science with Miss Lee, their teacher. The seventh graders spend one semester in either home ec. or shop; the other, in science. Mrs. O'Neill is the junior high math- ematics teacher. Let's write faster girls, is Mr. Orr's words in shorthand II. What's written on the board? That's for the experts i There serious-minded typing students are really concentrating on their lesson, aren't they? They are taught the funda- mentals of typing--letters, manuscripts, and other papers by Mr. Orr. Kay Sommers is giving a report in home ec class. Around these reports are centered discussions on the phase of study---the family and home life. Under Mrs. Fuller's able direction, these busy eighth grade seamstresses are sewing cotton dresses. It's fun, isn't it? Mr. Charles Erickson, the industrial arts teacher, is showing several of the sophomores various shop tools. Red looks rather doubtful, though, doesn't he? While loafing a little on the job, Jerry Marks and Elmer Minkel are chat- ting with Oave Schrupp at the Danube Creamery. Don't turn that valve, Oave. Mrs. Lowell Caldwell and Pat Tiech are shown in the meat department of CaldwelI 1s Grocery. ADVERTISING Helping Dave select a gift are Russel Reep and Mrs. Gloria Mattson of Reep' s Hardware in Danube. Busy as beavers are Mrs. Donna Mae Anderson and Mrs. Carl Engstrom who are addressing letters to their local R.E.A. patrons. Enjoying a cup of good coffee at Hazel's Coffee Shop is Mrs. Alfred Schroeder. Taking a break in the Oanube State Bank are Gus Klatt, Arlene Laumer, and Wayne Kircher. ADVERTISING Owen Manthei and Wes Schroeder are figuring someone's bill at the Farmer's Co-op Station. Get it figured correctly now! Ray Goldhammer, Aaron Sommers, and Dave Schrupp are discussing the prices of grains this spring at the Danube Farmers Elevator. At the Case Garage are Orrin Lueck, Howard Spencer, and Mrs. Howard Spencer, who are always on hand to help you with your needs.
