On their way to an important class meeting are the Senior class officers. They are: Ardell Tepfer, President; LaVonne Hoekstra, Secretary-Treasurer; and Lyle Jahnke, Vice- President. They, with their classmates, had a huge quota to meet, for the entire class planned a trip via railway to Washington D.C. Their other projects during the Senior year included the class play, Girl Shy , a comedy, the Carnival which was supervised by the Seniors and their advisors, Mr. Poissant and Mr. Orr; and other fund-raising projects such as monthly bake sales, magazine and Christmas card sales, consession stands at games, and a Style show in the Spring. Our final goal, graduation on May 27, came sooner than expected by most of the class. It is with regret the Seniors leave D.H.S. with all its memories but they look forward to the future and its possibilities. First Row: M. Shubert, P. Penke, S. Fischer, B. Hirman, J. Wacek, C. Our editor, Leona Kots and her efficient assistant, LaVonne Hoekstra are trying hard to edit Danube's best annual, The '58 Falcon. Many hours have been spent planning and preparing the Hawk's paper for every student and each advertiser. Each monthly edition contains news, fashions and a variety of humorous and interesting articles. A mistake is spotted and must be corrected!! Each stencil that is typed must be carefully checked before i t can be run off on the mimeograph machine. Through-out the year the band was in the eye of the public many times. Homecoming is one of our main events to show off our talents. We work hard and try to make our performance tops. We try our best to help enter- tain the spectators during the half- time of the athletic events. During the year we also put on our annual music concert with the chorus. In the spring we work hard to make our contest number the best so we can rate an A . Now seniors, the girl's trio will have completed four successful and enjoyable years of singing together. The girls, Karen and Karol Gens and Carol Yock, have sung for many occasions such as showers, P.T.A. programs, receptions and concerts. Each year they have entered the district music contest; each year they received an A rating. At the state contest they received a B rating when they were freshman and also when they were juniors, and an A rating when sophomores, one of the greatest thrills in their career. The newly organized group of Flag Twirlers has not only contributed additional entertainment at the Basketball games at which they have performed but also presented a spec- tacular sight in the Homecoming parade. Much cooperation and many hours of practice on the part of these girls is required to make possible these performances. They are, left to right: M. Martin, L. Manthei, M. Mellema, J. Abrahamson, H. Lueck, K. Gens, M. Houdek, Seated: 0. Grund. Leading each parade are the high school majorettes. Drilling with the drum cadences, practicing new stunts and just keeping the band uniform is their duty. Head major- ette is Nancy Kaiser, others are Marlys Reetz and Eurdine Tepfer. First row: J. Co-Captains, John, Gary and Lyle place the royal robe on Leona, the new Queen. J4 omecowuna The eve of Homecoming found a suspense filled audience awaiting the beginning of the festiv- ities - the coronation of the new Queen. The various speeches and other numbers seemed to last forever. Finally the big moment arrived when Cari- lyn Freiborg, 1956-1957 Homecoming Queen removed her crown and placed it on Leona Kots, the new Queen. The girls trio rendered a a number whichput into words the thoughts of many people A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody. Queen Leona reign- ed over the Homecoming Activ- ities held the following day with many people on hand to enjoy the events and the excitement which took place. Reigning Queen Carilyn and the anxiously awaiting queen candidates. Girls Trio sings a tribute of A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody to Leona our newly crowned Queen. Queen Leona and her attendants; Jeanette Reek, Harriet Lueck, Lois Manthei , Judy Schroeder, LaVonne Hoekstra and Patty Dykema. Coach Rod Black giving the team a prolonged pep talk at our traditional bonfire. An assembled cheering crowd at the bonfire following the Coronation of the Queen. Kathryn Bruggers and Phyllis Grafenstein ride the freshman float which won first prize in the Junior High division. Their theme was Shoot to Win. This star of blue and white is the Junior float. The star was also used in the gym for the dance. Their theme We'll Shine Tonight was indeed a good one. Upon this convertible are the attendants and two candidates. A real bunch of beauties, that was the opinion of the on lookers. A real beauty'. Those girls on the Sophomore float are Carol Roelofs, Janet Caldwell and Carole Kopel. Their theme was Good Luck, Hawks. The huge telephone with the theme Dial 'V' for Victory was the Seniors float which took fi rst prize. LaVonne Hoekstra, the queen, and Carilyn Freiborg, the 56-57 queen wave to the specta- tors as they ride by them. Tackle that man, fellows'. Our Homecoming could not have been a complete success If the boys hadn't beat Brownton in a thriller. No, we don't raise horses at Danube, although we have a few clowns. The Lone Ranger; his horse, Sliver, and the clown were included in the halftime entertainment'. Hr. Christensen strikes up his band at half time. The band presented A Day On TV. Right: Miss Schmitz is showing Joan how to use the scales. Why pull up your nose Miss Schmitz, doesn't it balance? ADove: Mrs. O'Neill uses blocks to dem- onstrate the problems. It helps too, doesn't it kids? Right: Students work the dirncuit ones on the board. Remember though, no copy- ing!'. Sciences Above: Learning to spell correctly is very necessary in English. Mrs. Poissant writes each word on the board for the students. See any misspelled words? Left: Patty and the teacher go over the latest ineligibility list with the class. Has everyone got your fingers crossed? Above: Mr. Brenden works separately with each student as they answer the questions in the book. Is History that funny? Left: Map work enables the pupils to locate each state and country easily. Notice the great state Mr. Brenden is pointing out! Above: The girls are deeply engrossed in their typing. Each copy must be flawless. Don't miss anv letters now! Right: Mr. Orr writes shorthand on the board which says No Shorthand tomorrow! That's one sentence the whole class can read no matter how imperfect its' written. Above: Mariann delivers a daily speech to her classmates. They're the judges and they get pretty critical sometimes. Right: The speech class practices their contest play. Their play for the spring is The First Mrs. Paris, which called for much action as is shown, but it looks like Mrs. Bottge thinks they need more vet. Above: The senior girls are getting the ingredients together for their meal. Do they look like future homemakers? Right: The junior girls are busy sewing clothes for themselves. Lett: Mrs. Bottge checks out a book for Dorothy while Kenny waits for his turn. The Library is used for reference and reading. What are you reading now, Dorothy, Shakespeare? Above: Secretary, Sharlotte, gives Karen lunch tickets in exchange for her money. It's a worth while transaction, don't you think, Karen? Left: The Superintendent's office isn't something of which to be afraid. Here two senior girls dropped in to see Mr. Poissant for a friendly chat and also asked for a bit of advice. Mr. Lowell Caldwell, who preferred just Lowell, was foremost a family man, a father of five, and this pretty much sums up his chief purpose in life—that of making his family comfortable and happy. He did this not only by establishing a paying business, but also by bringing much happiness and laughter through his personality, not only to his family but also to all who knew him. He was respected by all, probably because of his outlook on life, an outlook which certainly could be copied by many. He took life in stride—smiIing through good times as well as bad. He was a man with a tremendous amount of faith in people, in the comm- unity, and in his country. The following verse by Hal leek certainly describes Lowe11: Green be the turf above thee, Friend of our better days None knew thee but to love thee Nor named thee but to praise. Ardell Tepfer and Eldon Williams are being shown some merchandise by Mr. Reep. REEP'S HARDWARE has a complete line of merchandise for every need, both farm and home.
