As we gather daily we continue to advance our educa- tion, realizing that it is essential to attend school. Each day brings us more knowledge and teaches us to learn to communicate and understand one another better: it helps us mature and learn to face reality. Mathematics, Science Discipline Mind Combining new concepts in math and science with old established facts 'and rules problem solving with the omission of innumerable intermediate steps accepting the challenge to keep up with the modern world as it continues to expand its knowledge in science or skills in mathematics: that was the school year l97l-72 at Webster High for students of all grade levels. Building on the old, but always looking for the new has be- come an attitude thoroughly founded in the minds of Websterites through their science-math study. Pictured ut the right Mr. Bob Curington and Mr. Ted Vinyard are shown helping math students through some trying times uith problems that iust won't solve themselves. Rands Teague masters the technique ul focusing a microscope so he can see the slides rather than a reflection of his own eyeball: and Mr, Moore unsuers questions for biology students with difficulty understanding they were too busy trying to smile for the camera! v l f ffstf as 'Y In pictures below Miss Mora chucks test paper for 1imn15 Lopez who looks on upprchensivcly and Spanish students are seen ttorking in the language lah. CSi-ending Signal 7 Is Aim Communication: the stepping stone from an individual's thoughts to the point in time when he can make his ideas known and appreciated by others. Throughout our lives we are continually sending signals to others as one phase of this process of communication -and others in turn must evaluate these signals to determine their worthfthe effect upon themselves. Classical language helps evaluate times gone by: modern language leads the way for world- wide communication: speech skills show individuals how best to present ideas lor others' acceptance. 5. Q -.. vi 1 5' ,,. History, Social Studies it Books, Take To Road Broadening horizons have pre- sented new challenges to Webster students for many years, but the phenominal' growth of student in- terest in affairs political! has sharply brought to the attention of students this year the need to assimilate the facts of past eras with the facts and theories of the current time to help under- stand the world and where it might be going. The present is founded on the past, but proven in the future thus causing the necessity for all to stop . . . look . . . and listen as they delve into political, economic, and interpersonal relations as they exist in the world today. Through the study of artistic form, line. color. and perspectivefthrough the study of literature, writing, and the use of research facilities our generation can prepare for the good old days of our advanced years. The study of all phases of Art and English not only prepare us to meet the world head-on, but give us an opportunity to become the givers of culture for future generations. Q f5.,l,fsf:?ift We A , , Their Business IS Business Achievement of a high level of competence in business subjects is an essential in our rapidly expand- ing world. It has been necessary for the business department to expand its variety in basic business. It helps preview advanced techniques which tend to bring students to a high level of efficiency when they accept their first job. Through the Cooperative Office Education program many stu- dents work half-time in business offices while attending school to help prepare them for better jobs after graduation. Life in the business world is often complicated, often serene. f ' Mrs. Whetstine prepares her C,0.E. students for future business careers. Lela Clayton shows her skill on the dictaphone. and Vicki Tyler is caught in the act ol' a very ordinary situation-erasing! In other photos are shown students in varied business classes. Industrial Arts Program Is Varied Helping students plan for jobs while in school and immediately after graduation, the Industrial Arts De- partment offers a wide program of studies to equip those not neces- sarily planning on a continued edu- cational career. Graduates acquainted with selling techniques and machine-, wood-, and auto-shop experiences are equipped to go directly into the competitive labor market and succeed. Webster's well-equipped and staff- ed shops, drafting section, and Di- versified Educational program are busy places for both the job oriented and those seeking hobby training. Drafting, DE, Shops Train Workers S i 4 54724 J Big Trick In Learning Learn B Doing Acquiring skills and techniques by actual experience is often the most efficient method of learning and in both the homemaking and special education departments this experi- ence method of learning is applied. Manual skills and practical read- ing ,experiences necessary to make a batch of fudge, baste a hem, lay out and cut from a pattern, do the thousand-and-one things necessary to run a home or acquire and hold a job are studied. Students leave these departments well qualified to lead richer and more meaningful lives because of their teachers' dedication. Each member was chosen on his grade point average and service to school and community. Seniors had to aver- age 3.25 academically and Juniors 3.5. Members were initiated in the early fall, and thereafter began plan- ning their money-making projects to get things on the move. This eager bunch of brains showed their deter- mination as they proved to be a very active and concerned group. The NHS held activities such as films. the Christmas dance, the Ugly Man con- test and many other events. QA P in., I S? 'Dba 1' X r F hi' .V . 5 a ' 3 2? , K X .. , f ' M . Anyone regarded as having displayed great courage or exceptionally noble or manly qualities, or has done deeds showing him to possess such qualities-these are the athletic heroes of our school who bring us a meas- ure of success and publicity helping build school spirit. Warriors Tally Best Season Since ,6 Through the sacrifice of many after-school and summer hours the Webster varsity squad proudly pre- sented its school with a 6-4 record, the best on the books since the school year 1967! Even though the boys were plagued with injuries the offense turned in great performances. The defense likewise proved itself, ranking third in the State. They racked up wins against Mc- Lain 28-I3, Joplin I4-O, Sapulpa I4- I3, Sand Springs 34-6, Broken Ar- row 7-6, and their fierce rival Ok- mulgee 2l-20. They will be Don Straley, Brandon Jones. Mark Miller, Ralph Patterson, Matt Crain, and Randy Edison. Seniors David Blanke, Terry Williams, and Danny Rike will not be back. The boys are coached by Alan Ax- ley who took over mid-season when former coach Bill Lamb left Web- ster for a position at Livingston University in Alabama. The team placed third in both the Sequoyah and Bartlesville Invi- tational. They also defeated Central in a dual meet. Terry Williams, one of the team's best runners, originally went out for cross-country to get in shape for wrestling, but soon realized that it was more than that. He medaled at Sequoyah, McLain, Edison, and in conference. He also received a trophy for his performance at Star-Spencer. Swimmers Claim Conference Championshi Despite a lack ol. experienced swimmers and divers the Webster swim team has made an excellent showing in their dual meets. Win- ning three of their five meets the swimmers won the uncontested con- ference championship. The boys work very hard staying in condition for the meets. They usually swim 2400 yards each day. They are proud to have a new coach this year. Mr. Jim Dillard. Shown are some outstanding swimmers. In the lower left corner Randy Teague gasps for breath while Gary Eldridge looks on. Together We Can Create The Webster administration is without a doubt the best we could possibly have. They help us in our daily education and give us needed guidance. They maintain the school rules, punish wrong, and try to honor students who do some commendable deed to make Webster more out- standing. They help us make neces- sary decisions about our educational plans, counsel with us when we are mischievous, and they usually understand which seems strange to us students since they are The Establishment.
