English Dept. Strives for Achievement Not only teaching students grammar and literature, English teachers at Webster and branching out into such areas as propaganda, the humanities, and proper usage of the library. V Our teachers in this department also work with pupils in creative writing and production of original works. The journalism staff, sponsored by Miss Moita Davis, has made Webster stu- dents and faculty very proud by getting many of their excellent articles printed in' Tulsa Scbool Lzfe and Tulsa County News. Our library has an extensive collec- tion of books for student enjoyment and research. It is constantly growing under the supervision of Mrs. Blythe. In the pictures above, Mrs. Roberts' senior English class works on a newspaper unit, journalism stu- dents prepare copy for the Tulsa Scbool Life.At the left students are seen browsing through new books with an English teacher, Miss Davis, and Mrs. Blythe, our librarian. 'K' I 'il r l Above, students work in foreign language classes, while below, students enjoy acting in an ancient myth. To the left a speech student is aided by Mr. Ralph Smith, an intern teacher. l Communications Being Taught The oral communications curriculum at DWHS consists of the Foreign Language Department and the Speech Arts Department. The Foreign Language Department is made up of a program in Latin and one in Spanish. The Latin study begins with a program in basic Latin which teaches the fundamentals of the languageg the course is then supplemented by Latin II which is a continued study with specific areas of concentration. The Spanish department closely parallels the Latin courses. These begin with the basics and develop into a more advanced and ciritical study. An added advantage of the Spanish Department is the language lab which allows a better opportunity to improve the spoken language. The speech department consists of three levels of instruction. The first, Speech I, is the basis for oral communica- tions. The other levels, Speech II and III, are taught in a combined course which in- clude interpretation and discussion. , Scientific Future Studied l Recognizing the importance of the understanding of man in relation to his world, Webster's science department stresses physical studies as well as biological sciences. Course offerings in- clude basic instruction in physical science, biology, and chemistry. These courses offer the fundamental principles to sci- entific understanding and investigation. For the student who wishes to pursue this study further, the science curriculum of- fers advanced courses in physiology and chemistry. These classes build on the basics already established and expand into specialized areas. They stress the im- portance of independent study and logical thinking. Various science students are shown working in class in adjacent photos. r 1 1 Strong Minds Need Sound Bod 1 With the understanding that a healthy body leads to an active mind, Webster's physical education department is an im- portant factor in our education. Students learn the importance of competition and of good sportsmanship. 'Physical educa- tion classes serve to' create a better ' rounded student. A In the picture above Mr. Curington explains a problem to his class, while, below, Mr. Vinyard is supervising work in one of his algebra classes. Aware of the importance of mathe- matics in a college-bound curriculum, Webster's math department begins with a basic study in math and ends with trig- onometry and college algebra. Other courses include geometry and algebra. History Develops Background, Math Basic to College Stud Webster's history department offers a variety of courses.gThese include U.S. History, world history, ancient and me- dieval history, modern history, and gov- ernment and economics. These studies develop students' cultural background. Business Provides Challenge Students enrolled in General Office Education learn a variety of skills including dictaphone usage, statistical typing, and operation of duplicating machines. With the wide variety of business courses and opportunities offered at DWHS, a student is well prepared to enter the challenging world of business. In ad- dition to courses in shorthand, typing and office machines, the student is offered a chance to gain actual on-the-job experi- ence plus valuable office courses through the COE program. Beside the basic skills in office equip- ment the student has the option to con- tinue his progress in almost any of the areas offered. He may also choose to delve into the complete business law program. mphasis on Practical Skills . rf - Q f Qs 8 1 f WX if s f x 1 X , The Area Vocational Technical Cen- ter provides students with an opportunity to receive education in vocational and technical areas not offered within the curriculum of each Tulsa high -school. The classes range from the instruction in basic art for the funda- mental concepts to advanced art and form design. The more advanced art courses offer the individual an opportunity to expand his knowledge through his own creativity. Art Gives Creative Freedom 4 Special Education is a program to provide skill-training for students who have special needs. With the help of fed- eral funds, equipment, and highly skilled instructors, the students have perfected skills and held many part-time jobs -- earning while learning. This is one of the many phases in Webster's complete pro- gram of education. Special Instruction Offered i 1 ndustrial Students Perfect Skills in Shops Industrial arts help students learn trades which will be useful to them fol- lowing graduation. This phase of education ranges from on-the-job training in Distributive Edu- cation to preparing stage sets for assem- blies to planning a house in drafting classes. Other classes in this field of education include vocational auto mechanics, power mechanics, vocational machine shop, ma- chine shop and Woodworking I and II. Students in these classes are supplied with a great variety of equipment and ma- chinery as well as highly competent super- vision. The students work on various pro- jects which require individual initiative and creativity. In addition. to valuable vocational training, this department also provides students with the opportunity to develop an interest in many hobbies such as photo- graphy, stagecraft, woodworking and metal crafts. Basic instruction here provides the students with the incentive to do their work well and within assigned limits. Coop- eration is also instilled. Above: A student works on a project in metal shop using only one of the many pieces of ma- chinery provided for instruction. Upper left: Students work on one of the shop automobiles. Students prepare a co-operative Woodworking project. At the left: the drafting teacher, Mr. Mabry, gives students a few tips on perfecting their drawings. D. E. Provides job Trainingg Students Learn Living Skills Distributive Education provides stu- dents with on-the-job training in their areas of interest. This course gives stu- dents the chance to take some basic courses before school, the zero hour, and work on the job during the afternoon. Webster's Home Economics depart- ment includes Clothing I and II, home living, and Foods I and II. In addition to teaching sewing, cooking and household management these classes provide stu- dents practical skills for their future. 1 D. E. students are seen here learning to build win- dow displays around holidays such as Hallowe'en and Thanksgivingg home making students are seen learning basic machine stitching and broiling ham with golden pineapple slices. Band Strives for Perfection This year's marching band worked very hard to provide half-time and pre- game entertainment at the football games. For example, on one nine-minute show the band spent approximately 19 hours of practice time. The band again this year participated in the District Marching Contest, which was held in Bartlesville and received a I, superior, in inspection and a II, excellent, for their contest rou- tine. They also attended the OU Band Day. The drum major was Don Sanders, a senior. The majorettes were Glenda Bran- aman, head majorette, and Teresa Meech, seniorsg Vicki Caffey, juniorg and jean Probis, sophomore. This year the band, directed by Mr. jerry Burdick, held a Field Music Con- cert in which the marching band per- formed, in concert formation, the music they played on the football field. Enter- tainment at this concert was also provided by the Warriorettes drill team, the cheer- leaders and the majorettes. Instrumentalists Appear Often To boost spirit the stage band played y A at pep rallies and basketball games. Be- sides a stage band concert in April, they attended contests at Dewey, Miami, and Weatherford. Along with the concert band they presented a pop concert and attended Tri-State in April. Webster's concert band presented a winter concert on March 4, and again for the school on March 11. They participated in a music contest at Miami, the district music contest and the Southwest Tulsa Instrumental Music Festival held at Web- ster in the spring. In order to finance their various ac- tivities they sold candy, decals, and fruit- cakes again this year. The orchestra, both for the coronation of Miss Daniel Webster and the induction of the Warrior Chief, played Intrada of the Warriors, a composition written by Mr. Burdick especially for these events. During january the orchestra made a tour of the area elementary schools. The program for this tour included duets, so- los, and ensembles. The orchestra also displayed their talents in, two concerts during the year. They presented a concert in February and, along with the stage band and concert band, a Christmas concert. l Vocalists Provide Entertainment Appearing first on December 10, the Chanters, chorus, and glee club started an exciting season of vocal musical enter- tainment at Webster. The most widely known of these groups, the Chanters, have performed in a variety of assemblies and at a dinner for the west-side Rotary Club. They have also performed for civic groups at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa. Among the other groups the girls' glee club is for the purpose of vocal training and they have not performed except for the one program in December. The chorus, also, has performed only in concert with the two other vocal music groups. This drill team is made up of 27 spirited girls who performed drills and routines, and marched with the band in all parades and contests. These girls work hard through the fall sports season per- fecting all their shows. This year Warrior- ettes performed several different routines to songs such as The Horse, Hawaii 5-O, and The Work Song. These girls also marched with the band in the District Marching Contest, Christmas and fair parades and the Field Music Concert. Another added attraction this year was new uniforms designed by the Warriorette and band director, Mr. jerry Burdick. Warriorettes Delight Crowds The annual Potpourri anthology was produced by an energetic staff this year. Editor David Price coordinated the col- lection of students writings. Other officers were Becky Smith, co-editor, Mike Ryan, secretary-treasurer, and Stan McCray, art editor. Along with the regular edition, a special Christmas edition was also pub- lished. The club's primary time of activ- ity started a few months before printing and lasted through sales distribution. Sorting through the many student works took many hours of dedicated patience. Potpourri was printed by the Vo-Tech center, and sponsored by Mrs. Barbara Roberts. Potpourri Marches Cn unior Bankers Attend Board Selected representatives to the junior Board of Directors of The Mercantile National Bank were Becky Smith and Barb ara Harmon. They met every month, studying various fields of banking. Several bank officers acted as speakers discussing such subjects as loans, invest- ments, and checking accounts. Not only did they cheer at games and pep rallies, but they sacrificed much of their time to decorate the gym, stadium, halls and locker rooms as well as make spirit tags for the athletes to boost their enthusiasm. The cheerleader squad consisted of eight girls: janet Heath, head-cheerleader, Patti Gilliard and jan Dassler, seniors, Mary Dorsch, Rusty Scrivner, and Bobbie Stewart, juniorsg and Margaret Cook and Brenda Medley, sophomores. The cheer- leaders and pep club are sponsored by Mrs. Jacqueline Monore of the Girls' PE Department. l ' A 1 The cheerleaders and the Pep Clubs played an im- portant part in life at Daniel Webster as can be seen in the pictures on this page. Together with the Pep Clubs, the cheerleaders had the job of boosting school spirit and leading the athletes on to victory. Combining good sportsmanship with school pride these groups had a very successful year. The Pep Club, sponsored by Mrs. jackie Monroe, led a very active year. The goal of the club is to maintain school spirit throughout the entire year and Pep Club achieved this by selling spirit rib- bons, sponsoring pep rallies and promoting student participation. Officers this year are Chata Williams, president, Gayla Casey, vice-president, Mary Wood, secretary, Sally Buscher, treasurer. Officers of the Boys' Pep Club are Rod Ross, president, and Mark Trotter, vice-president. One of the largest and most active Pep Clubs Webster has ever had, the 1970- 71 Pep Club, did much to boost school spirit and loyalty by wearing their new blue and white uniforms. With the help of the Booster Club, the Pep Club sponsored a bonfire pep rally. Pictured in scenes on this page are the boys of Pep Club, girls in uniform along with the Cheer Leaders, and other girls who didn't wear uniforms on picture day. But uniforms didn't make all the difference - it was the enthusiasm of the members and at times their spirit rose higher than the flames at the bonfire! Big Pep Club Boosts Spirit PTSA Gives Scholarships Future Teachers has done much to- ward the advancement of students working for a career in the field of teaching. Many former students have returned to Webster to teach with Alan Axley,-Jerry Burdick, Gene Hart, Gary Smith, and Mrs. Shirley Young here this year. Officers were Melba Shatswell, pres- ident, Gayla Dean, VP, Diana Davis, secretary, Deanna Simmons, treasurer, and Guiequita Masterson, historian. Spon- sor was Mrs. LaVerne Howard. Webster's Parent-Teacher-Student . Association has provided many scholar- ships through the years for outstanding seniors. This year friends and family of Mrs. Beatrice Lowe, supervisor of Girls' PE and Elementary PE for the City of Tulsa, added to the PTSA funds for schol- arships. These scholarships are named in honor of Mrs. Lowe, a former Webster teacher. This organization promotes com- munication between the three groups it represents. Many interesting programs were held with speakers including Dr. Cawelti, Superintendent of Schools. Prospective Teachers Learn Lettermen Unified in Spirit The Lettermen's Club, sponsored by Coach Axley, represents every sport par- ticipated in at Daniel Webster. Many of the Lettermen, who are wearing new blue jackets this year, also belong to FCA spon- sored by Coach Allen. Participants in nine separate sports, who enjoy group athletics with much petitive contact. This unity brings about Webster's Lettermen find unity in one physical contact and those from individ- respect of each other's ability and organization which brings together those ual events without the same type com- endurance. Their friendly help is typical of the aid any student may receive from when he needs assistance. The typically small class size at DWHS and the close relationship between student and teacher makes for ideal learning situations. Most faculty members enliven their program of instruction with audio-visual aids, visiting speakers, and a free exchange of ideas among students. l Qgcliozt, 5 lflanza 12.51 Learn to live and live to learn Ignorance like a fire doth burn Little tasks make large return. - R. H. Stoddard -And so we say Farewell to Webster's favorite Spanish teacher for the past seventeen years... Mrs. Inez Nardin has devoted these years to the students at Webster. She was born in Pendleton, Texasg attended high school in Gatesville, Texasg Daniel Baker College at Brownwood, Texas, where she received her AB degree, and completed advanced study at The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma University, and The University of Colorado. She began teaching in 1925 in Coryell County, Texas, and taught at Telluride, Colorado, before coming to Webster in 1954. Since then she has taught Spanish, English, and math, has served as Chair- man ofthe Foreign Language Department, and has been involved in school activities. She organized the first Spanish Club and was a member of both the Board of Con- trol and the Principal's Advisory Council. Both Mrs. Nardin and her husband William, who also retires from Clinton junior High School this year, have con- tributed much to the education of west Tulsa students. Chief among our special assistants is our School Nurse, Mrs. Dorothy Rueb, R.N., whose office is busy daily as she checks and rechecks students for health problems. Her services are also invalu- able in helping keep teachers well, too. The office staff and special clerks handle a variety of tasks ranging from ordering and inventorying supplies to putting proper information on bulletins, information on permanent records, and books and films in needed areas. Workshop Produces Leaders The third week of March Webster students embarked on a trip to Washington D.C., for an intensive study of American government under the Close-Up program. The group attended seminars, discussion and study groups with many prominent government officials including Oklahoma's two senators and representatives. Earl Larkin, the Webster supervisor for Close-Up, was city trip coordinator. Some students travelled on scholarships. Many of the Webster students are shown here in a plaza at the Department of State. Also shown are a few of the stu- dents in a personal discussion with a representative from the Department of Interior who spoke on environmental pollution. , 148 Marceline, Mo., U.S.A. The DWHS Student Council spon- sored its fourth Leadership Workshop on March 25-26 at Reed Recreation Cen- ter. Each year the workshop is held for those students who have displayed or have capabilities for leadership in school activities. The two days of the Workshop were taken up with speeches by Mr. Hudson Wilcox, Webster speech teacher, who spoke on Webster traditions, and Mr. Ray Mullens from KAKC radio station who spoke on leadership qualities. Shown here are council groups. A highlight came when these groups pre- sented their skits solving school prob- lems. The students who attended the Workshop displayed their talents and imagination in group work. WALSWORTII Close-Up View of D.C. Uffered to Students . , . . V .. V VV V.
