'l'he activities of VVebster organizations add much to high school life. Every student in school is welcome to participate in some or- ganization, and to become a working member of ii. 'l'hrough this participation in activities, many assets are derived by the students which prove invaluable in facing the problems of adulthood in later years. These assets are developed by practicing leadership, giving service, learning vocational skills, finding enjoyment in life, and develop- ing physical fitness. We are proud of our organizations and our activities, and of the benefit derived from them, both by the school and by the individual. The ability to make wise decisions and the ability to lead others in solving problems are very important in today's society. Daniel Webster High School, through its many activities, both curricular and extra-cur- ricular, provides opportunities for the develop- ment of leadership qualities in every student who wishes to participate in the activities. One of the most important of the school organi- zations is the Student Council, whose purpose is to regulate student activities and provide for student participation in the government of the school. In the Student Council students have excellent opportunities for serving their school and at the same time performing duties which will help develop in them qualities of leadership. These qualities, developed in high school, will become increasingly important as adult life brings more problems and more responsibilities. By following democratic procedures in all of its activities, the school is developing leaders for our democracy. Pictures, top to bottom: J. W. Fager and Sammie Jenkins are leaders of our student council. Websterites form their policies by voting on many questions. Norma Hatley is an example of the many students who practice leadership in the classroom. E221 l Lefulers in School 5 Government 5lll7l'Nl fill Nl.ll. Among the many activities the Student Council has sponsored this year were filling Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets and decorating a Christmas tree. Four students attended the Southern As- sociation of Student Councils in El Paso, Texas, and four students attended the state convention at VVevvoka. 'l'he Student Council maintained concession stands at the basketball games and wrestling tournaments. Members have also sold popcorn after school. 'l'he council has sponsored sev- eral post-game parties and a successful drive to acquire a press-box for the football stadium. 'l'he VVebster council was host at the annual city convention. Another project was repairing the road sign. Each day the council sponsors a song-for-the-day on the public address system. All elections are under the supervision of the Student Council. Qualifications for officers were revised, and a list of major and minor offices was made. The underclassmen can well look forward to a better Student Council in the following years as services to the school are continued. Sr --u-'rw' I 23 4 Our Delegates to Uther Schools Ixllck-Scliool. Learning to serve others develops responsibility in the stu- dents and aids them in facing adult problems. Students perform services both in the school and the community, from ushering at plays to aiding in fund-raising drives. 'l'he .lunior Red Cross, an active service organization, has several animal projectsg which include packing overseas gift boxes and giving programs at 'l'ulsa hospitals. Journal- ism students capably serve by reporting school news to various newspapers. Photography students perform an important job in taking pictures for the newspapers and the yearbook. Student librarians, office, and bookstore staffs cannot go without mention since their functions are important in keeping school records and supplying students with necessary materials. 'l'he stagecraft classes provide an indispensable service, making sets for our plays, assemblies, and Talicade. Custodians keep the building sparkling clean to provide us with a happy environment. NVithout the services of many groups, the school could not be efficiently maintained, and we would not hare many of the things we enjoy most. l'ieI11r:'s, ruff tu lmltrnn: Bookstore girls provide study material for eager students. Members of our Junior lied Cross give till it hurts for our world neighbors. Helping visitors to our annual homecoming is serious work for these girls. l2il in ffm. Some of these give students a chance to learn the good and bad points about the vocations that they plan to enter. From work in a machine shop to work in an office, these organizations provide education in vocations, in leadership, and in social experience. The Future Teachers of America train for work in the field of education. The Future Homemakers of America promote an apprecia- tion of the joys of building t0morrow's homes. The Future Nurses of America strive to learn more about the care of the sick. The diversified occupations, distributive education, shop, typ- ing, office practice and shorthand classes further the particular vocational skills of the student. These organizations and classes do an import- ant service and are an essential part of the climb up the stairways of high school education. By the time a student finishes high school he should be able to make an intelligent occupational choice. U61 Finding Enjo ment in Life Recreation plays an important part in school life at Webster. Dramatic activities give ama- teur performers, planners, Writers, and stage- hands a chance to use their creativeness in pro- viding entertainment for both themselves and other students. Several parties a year are given by each class. The Student Council sponsors post-game parties and dances. Two of the biggest events of the year are the crowning of the football and band queens. These events are followed by parties in honor of the queens. Webster's two fine bands, the dance band and the swing band, play for these parties. The concert band, the orchestra, the choir, and the mixed chorus all present assemblies dur- ing the year. All of these organizations, including most of Webster's student body, participate in the annual Talicade. Also presented during the year are the sophomore, junior, and senior class plays and the two speech arts plays. These activities give each student a chance to use his ability and talent and train him to per- form under all conditions. l'ie!urr's, top to bottom: Sniuggletl radio gives sweet music in speech arts presen- tation of Stalag' 17. This program includes five regular boys' classes where they are given the opportunity to play the various seasonal sports. There are six grils' physical education classes where good health and posture are stressed. Boys' and girls' intramurals are offered. These enable the stu- dent to develop a sound body and to gain sports- manship hy competing with other physical educa- tion classes. Awards are given on the basis of a point system. Boys who wish to develop more fully their athletic abilities are given the opportunity in sixth hour gym. These boys represent Webster on the playing field in football, basketball, wrestling, track, and tennis. A school nurse comes each day to render any aid which may be needed, and the boys who compete in athletics must pass a rigid physical examination. Altogether, Webster has a Well- halanced and extensive physical educational program. l'11'I11rn's, top to bottom: There go two points. Norma Ledford about to make a big splash. There are eight sports in this program in which boys may compete. They are football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, softball, swimming, golf, and tennis. Many boys have received intramural letters this year. To do this, one has to have a total of fifteen hundred points. The points are award- ed on the championships through the four school years at Webster on the basis of five hundred points for first, three hundred for second, and one hundred for third place. Coaches Bill Allen and Bill McMichael helped the intramural teams a great deal this year by revising the sports program and offic- iating at the games. The second and fifth hour teams took the championship honors this year. Fifth hour took first in football and basketball. Second hour captured second place in these sports. Third hour took first place in the wrestling tourna- ment. Webster's intramural wrestling team downed the Clinton Junior High School squad in a meet early in the year.
