Two cabinet representatives were elected from each of the nine core classes. Beautiful Pat Hawkins was crowned Miss Daniel Webster XV and reigned with such lovely attendants as Jane Dale and Phyllis Trammell. The student body proudly elected Donald Carpenter as their Warrior Chief with Richard Hanks as Brave. Students who received the honor of attend- ing Boys' and Girls' State were George Henson, Johnny Looper, Jerry Billings, Earl Griffith, and Polly Howard. Mary Stilwell was chosen to receive the D.A.R. good citizen- ship award. One of the outstanding accomplishments of the year was that of having Jerry Billings represent VVebster as judge of the newly organized Youth Traffic Court. Jerry Looper was elected as an alternate, and both boys did their jobs well. The senior class showed its generosity by the fine contributions made to the Junior Red Cross and the March of Dimes. They also collected toys for the new recreational center of the Junior League Convalescent Home. The year was not all work, however. The seniors gave three successful parties. The first was a Dog Patch party, the second, a buffet dinner, and for the third, they teamed up with the sophomores for a delightful semi- formal dance. The senior athletes fought hard to bring victory and honor to their class and school. One senior placed first in the All-State wrestling tournament, held in the Webster gymnasium. After the Christmas holidays, the seniors presented I Remember Mama, from the WVebster stage. Jo Anne King displayed her outstanding ability as an actress, while a fine supporting cast contributed to the success of the play. As the year came to a close the hustle of graduation activities began. Teas, banquets, and the Junior-Senior prom highlighted the year. The commencement was held on the campus on May 29, with Dean E. H. Criswell of the University of Tulsa delivering the commencement address. SBHIOI' Cabillet-Firsi Row. left fo right: Norma Yount, Tom VVakely, Barbara Barber. Their many activities amply show this. Many honors have been brought to the class. Earl Wolfe and Coleen Gibson were ap- pointed to represent the Junior class on the Yearbook Board of Control. The Junior class presented its play, St L't'7Z- teenth Summer, on November 7. Members of the cast were Jean Ann Davis, Lynn Turner. Virginia Ayers, Jan Guinney, Joyce Sallee, Clif Blankenship, Jimmie Jones, Lemoine Scott, Donald Coulter, Marian Givens, Connie Ramsey, J. YV. Fager, and Charles Thompson. Alberta Hurt and Sammie Jenkins were elected football queen attendants while Dennit Morris was elected Warrior Brave. un' 1 A WVestern party was planned for the evening of January 20. Approximately 126 juniors and invited guests were present. The class was well represented in the sports program at VVebster this year. Un February 19, the class made a field trip to the Newspaper Printing Corporation as part of their study of a unit on journalism. The junior class took an active part in planning the Junior-Senior Prom, held May 8 in the Student Union Building at the Uni- versity of Tulsa. The school activity program has given us this chance. Early in the year a committee was selected to plan the organization of the class for the coming year. In November, primary and general elections were held and class officers and cabinet mem- bers were elected and installed. Francis Cathcart and Joyce Potts were our queen attendants, and Charles West was our brave. Kay Phillips and Dale Nunley repre- sented the class on the yearbook Board of Control. Merle Jacobson, Jerry Smith, and John Metcalf won prizes in citywide essay contests. The class was well-represented in other activities, including the Student Council, Shirley Owens the Red Cross, the Y-teens, the Pep club, the band, the orchestra, the choir, the assembly planning committee, and the school assemblies. The freshman basketball team won second place in the Sand Springs junior high tourna- ment. The wrestling and football teams also did very well. Highlights on the social calendar were the spring party, an educational, as well as enjoy- able culminating activity of the study of Social Behaviori'-and a skating party. The one project of which the class can tru- ly boast was the selling of candy to raise funds to buy silver for the school's use. The freshman class is proud of its accom- plishments, and we hope to do equally well or better in our next three years at Webste1'. VGNQ Q QJS., CTIVITIES awww Working Together No family album would be complete without a record of the activities in which the family has taken part. The excellent way in which the various organizations of Webster have co-operated and the way in which they have worked for the benefit of the school has meant much to us. These organizations have been organized carefully to give us the full benefit of their opportunities. Sports, dramatics, student government, and many other activities help broaden our lives and give us a feeling of belonging to the Webster family group. The feeling of unity on which every family is built is the spirit on which the clubs and classes of Webster thrive. Every person who has the desire may be a part of these groups. These organiza- tions Welcome the participation of every student. But, as every family needs the hard Work of every member, so do these organizations need the time and toil of every individual on their roll. Realizing this, the members will strive to fulfill their duties, which will benefit the group by the forwarding of its purpose and the indi- vidual by building him into a responsible and clear-thinking citizen of tomorrow. The activities began with the installation of officers and members followed by the sale of activity tickets. During the football season the Student Council held the election for Football Queen and her attendants, and post-game parties were given for the students without charge. The State Student Council convention was held in Purcell, Oklahoma, December 4, 5, and 6. For this convention VVebster provided a chairman and secretary. The council members and student body gave liberally of canned goods for this year's Thanksgiving baskets, which were presented to needy families in this area. A longed for goal was finally achieved when new baseboards were placed on the first floor hall. The biggest money raising cam- paign of the year started when the Student Council opened a drive to collect money for the curtain fund by selling concessions during Talicade, after school, at wrestling matches, basketball games, and track meets. A Kid- dies' Party, May 1, climaxed the drive. Little by little this fund will grow until someday Webster will have new curtains for the stage and auditorium. For instance, students have the oppor- tunity to earn while they learn under the Distributive Education program. This pro- gram allows the students to work on selling jobs and still receive credits toward gradu- ation. Another program, similar to this, is the Diversified Occupations program, which deals with jobs in the industrial field. Still another is the Vocational Ma- chine Shop, which trains students in that particular field. Music groups, art groups, and speech classes provide excellent opportunities for students to develop special abilities. As- semblies and plays give many opportuni- ties to cultivate and share special talents. The Y-Teens, the Junior Red Cross, the Pep club, and other groups, organized un- der student leadership and guided by facul- ty sponsors, provide wholesoine service and recreational activities. H41 Taking Part in Sports Each boy and girl entering WVebster has a chance to participate in sports. Upon the entrance in high school, each student is given a rigid physical examination. ln order to graduate, two and one-half years of physical education is required. VVebster high school has a well-organ- ized intramural sports program for both boys and girls. Varied sports activities are provided for each student in the intramural program. Hockey, basketball, softball, and swimming are the competitive sports in which the girls have a chance to use their abilities. Flag football, basketball, swim- ming, track, and softball are provided for the boys in their intramural program. Boys who have the talent and skill have a chance to use their athletic abilities to bring honor to their alma mater through the sixth hour gym class where they prac- tice each day in their particular sport. Besides sixth hour, the VVarriors vvork and practice until suudovvn each day, unless they have to perform that night. The com- petitive sports Webster participates in are football, basketball, wrestling, track, and tennis. Picfzwes, fofl fo bottom: Ill Up and over. QQJ Come out of' it, Howard. Under the coaching of Kenneth Bays, as- sisted by Hugh Pierce, former Webster stu- dent, track received added emphasis this year. For the first time, an intra-squad meet was held to open the track season. In this meet the Juniors and Sophomores defeated the Seniors and Freshmen. A few days later, the cinder squad traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to take part in the Oklahoma A. and M. Relays. The VVarriors came back with added spirit to overpower the Sand Springs track team. The next outing was with Rogers, in which our boys were defeated. After a rest, the Webster team went to Skelly Stadium, where they participated in the district meet. This was followed by the Bison Relays, the all-city meet, and the State tourna- ment at Stillwater. Besides these meets, the boys met with Sand Springs, Muskogee, and Sapulpa for a four-way track meet. This meet was held the night of April Q1 on the Webster cinders, the first night track meet in the history of the school. Four seniors, 21 juniors, and 12 sopho- mores made up the squad. Under the leadership of Coach Marvin Martin, Webster's tennis team made a good showing in the first official team competition. Coach Martin believes that the starting of a tennis team not only offers the students of VVebster a new sport in which to compete while in high school, but it is a sport that may be carried over into later life as a fine method ol' recreation. Coach Martin hopes that within the next few years tennis will become a reg- ular sport at Welister along with football, basketball, wrestling, and track, the main sports now. It strives to promote fellowship as well as a well-rounded program in health and physical education. The girls' physical education department, directed by Mrs. Beatrice Davies Lowe and Miss Nlillie Boone, offered a large variety of activities to each individual student. Softball, volleyball, tennis, basketball, rhythms, swim- ming, hockey, boy-girl dancing classes, ping pong, and an efficient health program are but a few of these activities. 98 Co-operating with this health program were Dr. Marcella Steele and Mrs. Helen Norman, the school nurse. Mrs. Grace Richards, matron, and Mrs. YVeaver, accompanist for rhythm classes, were always there to lend a helping hand. Intramural tournaments were conducted, and all dances for the all-school production, the Talicade, were created and taught in these classes. 1 chi: and Bea Senior s tsws Doing it the hard way Pretty pmzg pong players QI! gina .4 -'B I .-+...a K A Dizzy Dame the second D Up and over' ' , . , w ' X , 'S , Q ' ' Y 4- J ' Y tn, 'Nw A , f e. - . - .
