BROAD, principal, teacher, leader, friend, whose loyalty and earnest effort is one of the most important factors in the progress of our school toward new frontiers in education, learning and democracy, we sincerely dedicate our 1950 Wa1'rio1'. . Q SURVEY An uppurtunity to explore the elective fields is provided at Daniel Webster through the ninth grade Survey classes. Eighteen duys spent in each uf seven dif- ferent fields, including art, music, speech, drafting, shops, homemaking, Spanish, and the library, gives the students ax better background for choosing their subjects for the next three years. he SENIOR CORE A home nursing class for boys, the first ul' its kind in Okluhmnu, was cm1dut'tecl ul Daniel Wellstei' this year by rx Red Ciuss instructor. Dealing with niany nf the twmx' mon emergencies that urise in u home, this class is one of the xuuny kinds of life ud- jnstiuent activities nffered at VVebster tlirough the Senior Cure program. AGRICULTURE A course in agriculture, added to the Cnrriculum ol' our school this year, is the only course of its kind in the Tulsa city high schools. Individual projects carried on at home and class projects, such as the planting of a rose garden on the campus, are included among the activities of the boys enrolled in agriculture. NURSERY To provide high school students with experience and training in child care is the purpose of Daniel Webste-r's child develop- ment laboratory. Working with the chilA dren also provides an opportunity for the students to study their own personality problems through observation of the be- havior of' the three and four-year-olds. Q Y-vm. Soon after the election of of- ficers came the election of Football Queen. The lucky girl was pretty Anita Witt, and her attendants were Anna Lewis and Shir- ley Belden. At the end of yearbook sales in December the VVarrior Chief was announced to be Bill Don Walker. His senior Brave was Marty Edwards. The Senior Core activities were begun with a trip to four of the leading churches repre- sented in Tulsa. Other core activities includ- ed a dinner and a tea. On December Q, the seniors held a spaghet- ti dinner and party in the cafeteria and girls' gymnasium. Lzel Seniors played an important part in the sports activities this year. There were six- teen football lettermen, and the whole class was out backing them. There were only two lettermen in basketball, but that certainly did not keep most of the seniors from yelling themselves hoarse at the games. The wrest- ling team, with several seniors on it, took the state championship. Two seniors won in- dividual championships at the tournament. The senior play, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, was presented May IQ. The senior banquet and junior-senior prom helped to climax four years' exper- iences at Webster. Our speaker for com- mencement, the last step of our secondary education, was Dr. Eugene S. Briggs from Phillips University. JUNIORS -'A-xx 1 X w SX I 1 3 is : , . Mary Joyce Sneed and Sue Edwards were chosen as Junior Queen Attendants, along with Johnny Ferguson as Junior Brave, all three of whom we were justly proud. The junior play, The Eyes of Tlaloc, was a Wonderful success with a cast consist- ing of Charlotte Riddle, VVendell Clark, Paul Hanna, Joe Briggs, Peggy Tompkins, Thais Rose, Anita Ramsey, Lowell Blankenship, Velda Patten, James Patrick, VVayne Nunley, and student director, Anna Mae Wfest. i32I Juniors and their dates spent an enjoyable evening, January 18, at a Sock Hop. The only requirement was that dancers wear bright socks, and prizes were given for the brightest ones. After this party, plans got well under way for the Junior-Senior Prom. The juniors had a good participation in athletics and promise to make next year's sport season a successful one. There were junior lettermen in football, basketball, wrestling, and track. The highlight of the year was the selection of senior rings. The final choice left every- one happy and anxious to get his senior ring for I95I. Another big task was selecting two girls from the class to serve as queen at- tendants. Pat Hawkins and .loan McAliste1' received this honor. This is the first year that Daniel WVebster has had a freshman pep club. One was or- ganized early in the year, with Mr. Tom Baines acting as sponsor, Judy Coomes as president, and Joan lNlcAlister as secretary. Leading the yells were Pat Hawkins, Mar- tha YVitt, Shirley Thrasher, Eddie Creek- paum, Ralph Sigler, John Castle, and Tommy llarris. To obtain money for a class party, copies of the VVar Cry, Salvation Army publication, T471 were sold at Christmas time. The boys, side lost the sales contest and gave the girls a party later in the year. Sandra Frear and Bobby Bowden were yearbook board representatives. lWary Stilwell and B. W. Dykes were chosen outstanding freshmen for their contributions to the class and school. Donald Anderson was elected WVarrior Brave, and Sherry lVlilton secretary of the Junior Red Cross Council. The freshmben took an active part in the Talicade this year. Ninety-one participated or were indirectly connected with the produc- tion. Carol Smith was their representative on the Talicade Board of Control. '--.., S.- . P 1 S 9 6 5 f if P!! dal i, XVGVQ vviiiiwimg, 2, Big game iiimter. VVe have gone far beyond the mere teaching of reading, 'riting, and 'rithmeticf' VVe have tried to evaluate our courses by the measure- ment of our needs-adding and revising courses where we have found the need for them. The senior core proram, driver train- ing classes, radio mechanics, and distributive education are a few of the new studies that have been added in an effort to present to stu- dents a well-rounded program. Our extracurricular activities, also, are planned to provide us with a wide range of opportunity for development. As students work together on projects, in clubs and plays. and in many of the other activities sponsored by the school, they learn the value of getting along and co-operating with each other. The new frontiers that challenge us in vice, personal development, and health each have a part in preparing us for an active cit- izenry as We leave high school. l- Q. ,Mft Et, M , . ldllllll :us m ri Learning self-government, the need for consideration of current problems, democracy in everyday life, and practical skills are only :1 fraction of the benefits received from the various organizations at Daniel Webster High School. Members of the Student Council and the Junior Red Cross organizations are given the opportunity to participate in governing the school and to gain an understanding of prob- lems arising in the school as Well as in the community. These groups exist so that stu- dents will more easily understand government and domestic problems upon reaching adult- hood. Q Other organizations such as the stagecraft class, the student custodians, the lfVllI'1'iOI', Tulsa School Life staffs, and the nursery school offer students training in fields they may decide to enter after graduation from high school or college. Through these organizations Webster' high school is pioneering in serving its students as a link between good citizenship in the school and in the community. v t ,JW U11 --,.. ....b., Student louncil, 1950 K One of the new frontiers of 194-9-1950 was the noon recrea- tion program sponsored by our progressive Student Council. A leading educator, on visiting our school this year, commented that Webster students appear to be a very mature, relaxed, happy group who seem to know where they are goingf, Opportunities for personal development are evident in almost every phase of education found at Webster. Students find, in plays, assemblies, vocal and instrumental groups, a chance to develop their talents and discover new interests. Both classroom and extracurricular activi- ties are pointed toward helping the individual to achieve a happy adjustment to his sur- roundings. These activities, also, help to provide him with a lasting leisure time in- terest. The extensive testing service found in the senior core program, vvhich has had national recognition, helps to guide him into a vocation that will suit both his interests and his abilities. -dfxs-.,,,,K sv f-' , g t Ewa? The season opener was a Webster victory over the Henryetta Hens by the narrow mar- gin of 7-0. Muskogee was the next opponent, and the Warriors suffered the first loss of the season by dropping a 13-7 decision to the Roughers. Next came the most costly game of the season for VVebster as Quarterback Bill VValker was injured and put out of play for the next two games. In spite of Bill's injury, Webster beat Sapulpa 27-13, but the VVar- riors dropped a heart-breaking game to Cen- tral 4-3-0. Next came the Webster victory over the Sand Springs Sandites by a 27-6 count. The Warriors journeyed next to Bartlesville to take a close 7-O victory over the VVildcats. In the following game the Warriors beat the Rogers Ropers by a tally of 14-O for the third year straight. Okmulgee was the Warriors' next rival, and after wading in mud for 48 minutes of play, the hard-fighting Warriors lost 19-12. The last game of the season was on Thanks- giving Day with VVebster rolling over the Fayetteville, Arkansas, Panthers 28-16. Letters were awarded to 28 members of Webster's football team. Eighteen of these lettermen will be back next year to lead the Warriors to another great year of football. Intramural mul F reshman. ports Many boys who did not participate in var- sity activities this year were training towards the day when they will represent our school as A squad members. Other boys who may never participate in interscholastic sports took part in an extensive intramural program. The freshmen, under the direction and guidance of Coach Gene L. Brown, in basket- ball, football, track, and under Coach Curtis Turner in wrestling, had a busy and success- ful season. The freshman football team won three, tied one, and lost four games. ln bas- ketball the freshman won seven and lost six games. The freshmen also participated in two track meets: a dual meet with Sand Springs Junior High School and the .Iunior Iligh School division of the A. and M. Relays. The freshman team did well in wrestling, winning over Bristow in two dual matches and placing fourth in the Edmond invitational .lunior lligh YVrestling Tournament xv ith one individual champion in the 1:37 pound class. second place in the 145, l 12, 98-pound class- es, and three third places. One of the biggest performances of the B- team, coached by Tom Baines, and freshman football squads was in the double header played on Scoreboard Night. From this event enough money was obtained to complete the fund to purchase a scoreboard for the YVeb- ster field. A chance to participate in a wide field of intramural sports is given to all boys in gym classes. Softball, ping-pong, horseshoes, bas- ketball, football, volleyball, track, wrestling and tennis are some of the things in which competition exists. The second and fifth hour teams took the honors in championships this year due to the number of upperclassmen who participated in these events. Fifth hour took firsts in basket- ball, wrestling, and volleyball, and second in football. Second hour took second in basket- ball, volleyball, and wrestling. E791 Basketball After a poor showing for the first half of the season because of only two returning let- termen, Coach Paul lxflorrisf Webster round- ballers came alive and won seven of their last nine games to gain a 12-7 lost-won record for the 194-9-50 season. An inspired Central basketball team ended the season for the YVar- riors by defeating them in the regional tour- nament 4-Q-32. The Braves went on to win the tourney. One of the seasonls highlights came against our cross town neighbors, the Rogers Ropers. Although the Warriors came out on the short end of a 39-35 score, it was the best of the intra-city games played this year. The Wlar- riors really hit their stride against Bristow and rolled over them 63-27. Only two seniors will graduate from this year's squad which points to a successful sea- son next year. Gerald Kasting and Bill Walker both hope to extend their basketball careers in college. Wrestling Winning four first places in the state tour- nament, the VVarrior wrestling squad upset all competition to win the State Champion- ship in the Central gymnasium, February Q4- and 25. Until the tournament the season record was not exceptional with three defeats marr- ing the record. Of the five wins, two were shutouts, which made the picture a little brighter. Of ten contestants entering the tournament only three of them lost out completely. Be- sides the four first place winners three other YVarri0rs finished in second, third, and fourth places. When the points were tallied at the end of the tournament, WVebster was in first place with 33 points, followed closely hy Central with 31 points. Everett Johnson repeated the feat of taking the state individual 165 pound championship which he captured last year. VValdo Sharp won the championship in the 1:20-pound class. Clyde Valentine won the 127-pound cham- pionship, and Jess lVIcNulty took first place honors in the 145 class. Coach Curtis Turner did a fine job of pilot- ing the boys. Team games, rhythms, corrective exercisces, individual sports, and swimming are offered throughout the year. An unusual feature in the physical educa- tion classes this year were the co-educational rhythm classes. Mrs. Helen Dunagan was the accompanist for the rhythm classes. Dances for the annual talent production, the Talicade, were created in the physical edu- cation classes. A modern dance class for this purpose is being formed for next year. Intramural tournaments were played in basketball, volleyball, softball, and hockey, and individual tournaments were held in ten- nis. A Red Cross swimming course is offered to all girls in the physical education classes, and all are required to pass the beginners' swimming test. t The Girls' Athletic Association, under the direction of Mrs. Creager and Mrs. Lowe, meets once a week for business meetings and sports of various types.
